Viva La Microphone Evolution
KitPlus 2018 marks the twentieth year of Sennheiser Evolution microphones - a range of wired and wireless live performance microphones and wireless systems that took Sennheiser from relatively small-volume broadcast manufacturing to a prime position on stages around the world. Last November, Sennheiser UK marked this auspicious occasion by holding an evening of storytelling, hosted by Jamie Gosney and featuring Michael Polten, Martin Fischer and Andrew Lillywhite, all key members of the Sennheiser Evolution team, as well as Pete Malandrone (guitar tech to Dr Brian May), Joe Campbell (monitor engineer for artists include Chris Rea, Placebo and Adele) and Chris Denman (producer of the live sessions at Global Radio) who have all used, and loved, Evolution microphones for many years.

Tried and tested: DPA d:vice
KitPlus KitPlus recently took delivery of an interesting piece of equipment for review. We like our iPhone gadgets here. For us, useful iPhone gadgets started when the Olloclip lens gave us a wide angle adaptor. This was a good start, finally evolving into a proper tool when Ziess produced the Exolens system for the 5,6 & 7 series iPhones. Around the same time as the Olloclip came out we were testing the Fostex AR4i which was a very exciting development at the time. You have a portable device, that you carry everywhere with you, connected to the world but with very limited audio capabilities. A stereo interface with decent microphones was a real boon!

A wide spectrum of choice
Andy Clements Without microphones, in-ear monitors (IEMs), intercom and distribution systems based on wireless technology, many of today's large-scale television studios, outside broadcast and film productions would be very difficult, if not impossible, to stage. Wireless solutions provide convenience and, in the main, great performance, however as with many technologies careful investment will provide the best results.

Eye to Eye: Video Post-production
N/A Video post-production has long been one of the fastest developing subsets of the broadcast business. It was among the first to lead the shift from hardware into software, bringing huge advantages in terms of affordability and ease of use. I can still remember the high cost, heavy weight and low quality of the early analogue tape to tape video editing systems. The expression 'colour comes later' returns to mind. IBC will see the introduction of quite a lot of new video-post kit including a respectable amount designed to handle 3D content which I will start off with.

UWP-D11 Review
Kevin Cook Ever since the new regulations in the UK on radio microphone frequencies were introduced in the UK at the end of 2012, the days were numbered for my trusty old Sony UWP series radio mic system (consisting of the URX-P1 UHF dual-diversity receiver and UTX-B1 transmitter). Whilst super-reliable and excellent quality, this combo is limited to channels 67-69 which the government sold off to expand the frequencies available for mobile phones (cheers!!).

Making the second screen work

Jon Pratchett Up until recently I always thought that a battery was, well just a battery. After all its just a load of cells strung together and put in some kind of case right? How to choose the right broadcast microphone

Sony UWP series microphone review
Jon Pratchett Its all well and good having a beautifully lit and well framed and focused shot, but if the sound is rubbish then you might as well throw the footage in the bin. Sound is as important as the quality of the video image. This is especially true when interviewing someone or recording a corporate presentation.

Why does my project look different on every screen I watch it on?
Thomas Urbye

The age old question, asked by so many people who’ve come through my suite: “I’ve downloaded it to my laptop and it looks different?”. Then there is the inevitable panic: “Thomas, how can we make sure that everyone who watches it, watches it ‘properly’?”. This issue recently came to light with a campaign backed by moviemakers launched to make sure films are watched "as the director intended".

Hands on an IPad 2
N/A Its been near on 1 year since the Apple iPad landed on planet earth. No one knew if it was going to be a success, sceptics were sure that the tablet format would be nothing more than a fad and that true portable computing still lay in the realms of the notebook pc's. However after 9 months and 12 million units sold, Apple of course, again, annoyingly were right and the iPad took the world by storm, transforming the portable computing market in to a tablet infested sea of android and windows wannabes.

Realising the full benefits of hybrid broadcast and broadband
N/A We are all clear that there is a great deal of momentum in pay television at the moment. Alongside that driver, though, there are others which are dramatically changing the way consumers watch television. These include the desire to watch programmes at a time of their choice not that of the broadcaster (and in the room of their choice), and the use of other devices laptops, smartphones, tablets at the same time as watching television.

Location Sound Recording And Post-production with Chris Watson
N/A Ask The Experts Sound is often regarded as playing a subordinate role to visuals in film, TV and video production, but the finest directors and producers have insisted on taking as much care over the sonics of a production as the visuals. Of course, on smaller-scale productions, it's still often the case that the soundtrack is whatever you capture while youre busy recording the visuals, plus any incidental music you can afford to put over the top.

How to choose a Microphone
N/A The microphone is probably the most important tool we use when recording sound. Plugging it into the best pre-amplifier will optimise the quality of the signal but no amount of processing will fix the wrong sound coming from your microphone. The device for turning movements in the air into an electrical signal is a creative instrument and should be regarded as part of the performance.
