Live audio contribution over wireless networks
Pablo Rodrigues Altmann Wireless “live” contribution from anywhere at any time, this is the ultimate goal for most news reporters. The old favorite of using ISDN is becoming harder and much more expensive to access easily. Today most of us use wireless daily, in particular Wifi and HSPA/LTE 4G networks. These are now mature technologies and widely used for many applications in the home and whilst out and about. However there are still some professionals who prefer to persevere with the traditional, costly and limited ISDN communication technology before jumping into the wireless era.

G-Teching Storage to another level

Technological advances in the broadcast industry
Alan Wheable Since it is Omnitek’s 20th anniversary this year, I thought it would be interesting to look back over the technological advances in the broadcast industry over the last few decades and look at the similarities between then and now.

AoIP in the intercom world
John Sparrow Everyones talking about using AoIP (Audio over IP) in the broadcast world, but what does it mean to the operators actually making the production - the intercom users? And after years of interoperability taking the lowest common format of analogue tie-lines (also known as 4-wires), has intercom today already moved into the digital world by sharing digital audio resources with other types of hardware?

Understanding the process of video production
Joseph Adamson In this article I will focus on understanding the process of video production. The use of miniaturised video equipment and understanding the capability of the kit chosen for the job will be mentioned. The video production process is a road map, which not only helps the producer to minimise problems during production and achieve professional results, but also saves time. This process can be tricky to understand and many videographers are self taught, including myself.

360 degree video storage requirements
Dave Frederick Swim with bears, run with the bulls, get a pads-eye view of a rocket launch: 360 degree video production, also known as cinematic VR, makes these and many other bucket list-worthy events more accessible than ever. The format has evolved into a powerful storytelling tool, and one that changes not only the way in which visual experiences are shaped, but also the way in which media consumers perceive and interact with video content.

More than just selling cable
Chris Smeeton - new Choices facing technology decision-makers are becoming increasingly complex due to rapid changes in the industry like broadcast and IP technology convergence, multiplatform demands, and the rise of 4K and 8K. It is now a constant challenge to balance the need to maintain already-installed equipment and fulfil the desire to provide the highest resolution picture and sound.

Wireless transformation contributes to IP future
JP Delport The consumer appetite for content is driving broadcast manufacturers to explore every opportunity to make physical devices smaller, faster and more efficient - right from the ability to squeeze the business end of an OB truck into a single flight case to HD transmitters that can be held in a child's hand. Only a few years ago none of this would have seemed possible. Today, it's all but a necessity.

Audio
Pieter Schillebeeckx Audio monitoring has come a long way since its humble beginnings of a box with a speaker, a volume control and an analogue input. Today's high-end audio monitoring units boast an impressive array of I/O such as SDI, MADI, AES-3 and Analogue while offering a large amount of functionality such as accurate metering, loudness measurement, Dolby decoding, metadata analysis and video confidence monitoring. There is however a huge storm brewing in the world of broadcast in the form of video and audio over IP, which will turn everything upside down.

Fact from Fiction - IP transport
Bruce Devlin Wandering around the endless corridors of NAB in 2016, you'll hear much more talk of IP transport than in previous years. If you're lucky then you'll see a few GUIs that might show Software Defined Network (SDN) routings or channel allocations. You might see a GUI that shows the flows of essence, grains, packets or other networked "stuff". If you're really eagle eyed then you might even see some hardware. Yes, that's right hardware - remember the metal boxes that we used to have to supply with electricity and the hook up in the days before cloud? I am certain that there is real hardware to be seen out there.

Staying within a recognisable landscape
Alan Wheable 2015 saw the maturing development of UHDTV 4K signal technologies and a growing agreement that both SDI and IP will exist in their respective strong application areas, as a solid engineering solution to the differing requirements of live signal handling and programme contribution.

Test & Measurement: Ask the expert
Alan Wheable There are basically two different approaches to capturing the Eye Diagram from an SDI signal. These are real-time capture (employed by Real Time oscilloscopes) and signal subsampling (employed by Sampling oscilloscopes such as the Omnitek Ultra 4k Tool Box). All broadcast T&M equipment will use one of these approaches to create the Eye Diagram using a variety of proprietary techniques.

Making remote production over IP a reality
John Smith Live sports broadcasting is one of the most technically challenging tasks for any production team. Multiple signals in multiple formats need to be transmitted around the sports facility. In addition, signals need to be integrated with feeds from other locations to create a complete broadcast stream. As a result, remote production over IP has recently become a much discussed topic! The possibility of simplifying networks by consolidating all media traffic onto a common platform, and taking advantage of the increasing availability of video devices that natively support IP could solve many challenges. However, recent advances which bring together both broadcast and telcos technology means we are now seeing the transportation of established broadcast signals over IP across established internal and external networks become a reality.

The beat goes on... 4k, 8k and the continual need for T&M
Adam Schadle Just a few short years ago, 4k was the future, but now that 4k televisions and other screens are becoming more widely available, the format is careening toward the present. 4k is still an emerging delivery format, to be sure. After all, there are still places in the world that have yet to transition from SD to HD. But progress marches on. Even as were in the process of adopting and perfecting 4k production equipment, methods, and content delivery, were looking toward doing the same with 8k video, with certain large-audience events and special venue applications as a starting point.

Advantages of SSD Hybrid Solutions in Post Production Environments
James McKenna There's a plan for everything in life. Think on it, scope it out, ask around and come up with a consensus, you'll be prepared when it happens. Like post production for example - you're bidding on a job that's acquiring in 6K for a UHD DPX deliverable, and you want the whole deal, edit through delivery, so you make a plan. Transcode to Pro Res HD for edit, up-convert to 6K for finishing and grading, render out to UHD DPX for delivery. Well done, it's a good plan. But wait - the colorist wants to work in DPX, and offline/online sounds like old-tech to the young producer, and he wants to run 6K raw throughout. The best laid plans are thwarted thusly. The new plan may be to rebuild the facility from scratch with fatter interconnects, new workstations and bigger, faster storage.

Venice live productions tools go to the consumer
Tim Felstead The objective of most studio production is to cost effectively create live or as live television to which audiences will be drawn. During the process of creation, recording into media servers can either be a separate process used only for immediate replay, or can be part of a media workflow serving multiple target audiences in parallel. Rohde and Schwarz have invested heavily in its Venice Media Production Hub to ensure it is able to fulfil the requirements for the latter. A media production hub is a central component of media workflows, managing movements and transformations from one media type to another.

Realising the full benefits of hybrid broadcast and broadband
N/A We are all clear that there is a great deal of momentum in pay television at the moment. Alongside that driver, though, there are others which are dramatically changing the way consumers watch television. These include the desire to watch programmes at a time of their choice not that of the broadcaster (and in the room of their choice), and the use of other devices laptops, smartphones, tablets at the same time as watching television.

3D to see at IBC 2010
Bob Pank# IBC2010 marks the fourth year when the new wave of Stereoscopic 3D took hold at the show. Thats three years of time for development and implementation. While cinema is racing ahead, taking a good extra percentage of people at the door who pay a 3D premium price television in Europe is only just beginning. Sky is the pioneer for the UK, going on air in October soon after the show. This will, surely be a defining moment when 3D comes to TV not just for a special event but to stay.
