Evolutions in the media cloud with Bob Pank
Bob Pank# Years ago my boss, the sales director, warned me that talk of technical revolutions was not good. After all, a revolution ends up where it started. On the other hand evolutions were much better. Of course he was right.

Summer of 3D
Bob Pank# Having put 3D to one side for a few months it was very interesting to jump back into the third dimension. With 3D not making the headlines much, if at all, you might be lulled into thinking it has faded away, but thats not the case. Many events are being shot in 3D, including the Olympics and, although there has been nothing happening that could be called a revolution, there is a great deal of evolution going on.

Unconvincing conversion?
N/A There have appeared in the last year or two an amazing array of 2D to 3D conversion boxes and software processors. Also nearly every major manufacturer of high end 3D sets has its own proprietary built-in processor allowing the user to view any ordinary TV broadcast or DVD instantly as a 3D rendition.

2011: 3D Make or break?
Bob Pank# Last year was predicted to be the year when 3D would leap forward or flop. History is littered with short periods of interest and development only for 3D to drop off the scene again. 3D Diaries has maintained that this time its different as now nearly all the right technologies are available the only missing link being a practical autostereoscopic screen.

Quality is the best policy
N/A HD has become the production standard norm. Why have audiences embraced HD so enthusiastically? Because it looks and sounds great. If you have a 42 or bigger screen in your home then the difference between SD and HD is obvious to all, and so HD channels have to maximise that benefit to get a commercial edge. Quality.

2011 wasnt all that bad for TV & Commercials, was it? So what does 2012 hold?
N/A 2011 was pretty depressing, reading the paper or watching the news was a miserable experience, and all in all, those who still have a job, or have a business should apparently be chuffed to bits!

3D: The Stereographers Tool Kit
N/A Essentially we all want stereoscopic 3D to become less technically complex, but its crucial to understand why so much additional attention to detail is required.

Is it time to hang up your glasses for field 3D monitoring?
N/A The rapid growth of 3D content being shot and produced has created many challenges to the camera operators, production teams and indeed manufacturing companies.

Headache-free 3D
N/A Whatever display technology is used to deliver the 3D images, it is obviously important not to send viewers home with a headache, particularly before they have actually invested in a 3D system of their own. It helps a lot if 3D programme producers understand what causes such headaches because only then can they take effective measures to avoid them.

Glasses wars again
Bob Pank# It was never going to be easy. Even now, over four years into the modern 3D era, reliably creating and displaying 3D still presents many challenges

A little bit over the top
N/A Vertical disparities in 3D stereoscopic images have several causes: principally they would be due to one camera being mounted such that its optical axis is higher than the other.

Post Production Ask The Experts
N/A Its a familiar scenario: A client calls with an urgent transfer request. It may be a movie sourced at 23.98PsF that needs conversion for broadcast, and the client needs an HD version at 1080 50i with Dolby E audio and an SD program at 625 50i with PCM audio, as well. Or perhaps the content was shot at 1080 59.94i, but the client needs a 720 59.94p version for transmission. Or, maybe the client wants to replay a 1980s SD program series on a new HD channel. These jobs can become unexpectedly complex and time-consuming if content arrives in a less-than-ideal state.

3D Diaries Part 1
Bob Pank# Welcome to 3D Diaries, TV-Bays own monthly column dedicated to 3D. Each month will feature an aspect of the 3D chain from scene to screen all areas are affected in some way or another, so theres plenty to talk about! But this would be meaningless if you are not a 3D believer, so this month Ive shown why 3D is now here to stay.

Why do poorly composed 3D stereoscopic images give headache and eye-strain problems
N/A The brain is used to being able to fuse the two separate views of the world seen from each eye into a 3D perceived scene. However we have a closed-loop system and the eye muscles constantly pull convergence and focus depending on the region of interest.

Stereoscopic production and transmission
N/A If ever there was a technology that has taken its time to mature, it is that of stereoscopic (3D) production and transmission. It is well documented that the mechanics behind the technology has been around almost since the inception of the moving picture itself and in fact stereoscopic stills technology was developed in the 1840s.

3D Post
N/A Rewind a couple of years and 3D was a hot topic but there was very little production and few companies able to offer suitable support for efficient 3D post production. Many people thought it would fade, as before. A few even hoped it would go away!
