Centre Stage for Cameras with All About Eve
Anthony Newton Taking its inspiration from the classic 1950 film, Ivo van Hove’s stage production of All About Eve, starring Gillian Anderson as theatre darling, Margo Channing, and Lily James as the eponymous Eve, retains the themes of ageing, celebrity and obsession. The piece, produced by Sonia Friedman Productions and Fox Stage Productions garnered stellar reviews during its recent run at London’s Noel Coward Theatre.

The Benefits of LED Lighting in Broadcast
Rod Aaron Gammons The humble LED studio light has come a long way since its introduction. In the early days adoption was low, while scepticism that the quality and functionality of LEDs could rival traditional tungsten lighting was high. There has been a period of adjustment, challenges (particularly around light quality and manufacturing) overcome and the broadcast, media and entertainment industry has gradually grown more accepting of the technology and its benefits.

Shoot safe, shoot dynamic
Nick Allen Miles Todays craze for shooting from a UAV or drone is not for the faint hearted. Unless used legally and in very limited situations, its a dangerous way of capturing dynamic shots. Wherever people are involved or height restrictions apply, there are more useful ways of filming safely that deliver a more interesting shot than anything taken from a tripod mounted camera.

Looking at the teleprompter
Beth Zarkhosh Talking directly to the camera - a basic fundamental in the world of TV presenting. So, (please excuse the pun) cue the teleprompter.

Three days to launch a TV station
Neil Hutchins# We go on-air in less than 100 hours is an alarming statement when the studio and control room in question contain no technical equipment whatsoever. But this was the situation that we faced upon arrival at the new Local TV channel in Manchester for the first time as we began to unload the van late on a Thursday afternoon at the end of May, we knew that the station had to go live on Sunday evening, just three days later. And not only did the new channel plan to launch with a live studio show, but it would also have to remain on-air with its own transmission output continuously after that. We have worked on projects with quick turnarounds before, but the speed and scale of this one were quite breath-taking.

Moving voiceovers into the 21st century
Leigh Emmerson There was a time when the only way to get a voiceover for your production was by contacting a voiceover agent who would obligingly send over a CD or two full of voiceover sparkle and you and your client would choose one, schlep on down to a studio and pay a small fortune to sit on a swanky sofa and watch said sparkle record your script.

Cautionary notes from GTC Member number 001
Dick Hibberd Recently I was invited to be on the panel of judges charged with selecting the winners of the 2014 'Bill Vinten GTC University Awards'. Cloud Editing at BVE
KitPlus As Media Partners at BVE 2015 KitPlus was responsible for recording, editing and publishing 50+ hours of video content from the event seminars, roaming reporters and studio discussions over the course of the show. With material coming from different sources, crew and post-production staff consisting largely of students with varying levels of proficiency and tight timelines thrown into the mix we needed a post-production solution that was quick to set up, easy to learn and provided a creative and reliable solution. Venice live productions tools go to the consumer
Tim Felstead The objective of most studio production is to cost effectively create live or as live television to which audiences will be drawn. During the process of creation, recording into media servers can either be a separate process used only for immediate replay, or can be part of a media workflow serving multiple target audiences in parallel. Rohde and Schwarz have invested heavily in its Venice Media Production Hub to ensure it is able to fulfil the requirements for the latter. A media production hub is a central component of media workflows, managing movements and transformations from one media type to another.

I am much more aware of my strengths and what it takes to produce good broadcast quality television. Studio furniture at the cutting edge
Graham Buchanan Custom Consoles was established in 1996 to meet the market demand for efficient and robust studio furniture at accountant-friendly prices. That may sound trite but we were working in SI roles ourselves and knew from direct experience how difficult it was to commission third-party desks built to the high standards our clients needed. As the company's name reflects, we specialised from the start in producing furniture tailored to the specific technical requirements and room dimensions appropriate to each project. Our objective was to reduce capital costs wherever possible. Custom Consoles built its name on the design and manufacture of bespoke furniture to a client base that includes the BBC, Channel 4, Carlton, TV4 Sweden, and Sony.

Having recently outfitted the facility with mocha Pro from Imagineer Systems, the artists at Coffee and TV had no idea just how useful the software would prove itself to be.

The joy of field editing
Kieron Seth#

In the world of remote working, cloud storage and instant news, the ability to edit on location at a shoot has become a pre-requisite. Only a few years ago, field editing used to be merely about the quick rough cut, the assembly of proxy files or simply the ingest of media in an edit-friendly format. These days, however, energy efficient, high performance processors allow for the complete post production process on a laptop. Now, programme turnaround times can be slashed with editorial decisions made on the spot.
