elcome to issue 73. Firstly a very Happy New Year.
As a regular recipient of the tv-bay Magazine you would have received
the annual wall planner in the December issue and hopefully have
been busy plotting out your year. Given the manic 12 months that was
2012 then 2013 was expected by many as being a bit of a damp squib and one to
hide under the duvet until things picked up. Kit left over from the 2012 games was
expected to flood the market leaving distributors and manufacturers short of sales
for the foreseeable future. A quick poll however shows that feelings are somewhat
optimistic for the year ahead with kit finding homes in growing markets, assisted in
some cases by incentives such as the Government Pupil Premium. In his monthly
finance column Peter Savage touches on other avenues that will no doubt help boost
kit investment, take a look on page 34.
Since the mid 2000’s manufacturers have toyed with pay as you go services rather
than selling for a one-off lump sum investment. This trend is now increasing with
many renting their downloads or unlocking features by the day, week or month
meaning freelance editors for example can access top end solutions when they need
them for a feasible cost. Together with a plethora of post-production solutions, kit and
information Will Strauss looks in this issue at the evolving face of post on page 32.
2012 heralded a number of “off shoots” for tv-bay which continue to grow with the
live monthly show now a regular on the calendar (next show 22nd January 7pm
www.broadcastshow.com/live) and also now streaming live from a number of trade
shows including BVE South on 26th, 27th and 28th February as well as show floor
interviews with exhibitors throughout. For those in the regions you may have visited
the Look Listen Experience last year and the road show returns this year to Glasgow,
Manchester, Bristol, Cardiff and London in March, for more details turn to page 57
where the events promise to bring a wealth of kit and knowledge to your area.
