I was fortunate enough to spend some time with NewTek this month. Since the very early 1990’s pioneering products such as The Video Toaster have continually pushed the boundaries to ultimately realise, in NewTek’s words, that “your favourite shows will one day be produced by someone you know. Maybe even you”. It’s easy to see how a threefold increase in business in just a few years has come about with viewers demanding online video, creators demanding an integrated workflow and an ever expanding infrastructure in place to meet those demands. Stand by for some staggering stats…. 72 hours of video is added online every 60 seconds. 51% of all internet traffic is viewing video content with 28% of people watching it on a mobile device. It’s predicted that two thirds of all mobile internet traffic will be video based by 2016. Socially, 40% of all tweets are related to a tv program with 60% of twitter users tweeting whilst actually watching TV! The industry has never been more connected and technology has increasingly made the workflow more efficient with cameras recording simultaneously in multiple formats with some even streaming direct. It seems to all be about getting it out there with the minimum kit, and increasingly minimum manpower, and in this issue we’ve taken a look at the revolution happening before our eyes in the industry. Those regular followers will not have missed the fact we were around the UK last month with the BroadcastShow Tour. We covered 5 cities in just over 2 weeks, welcomed over 1000 visitors, served over 2500 cups of tea/coffee, covered over 1500 miles and loaded / unloaded a 44ft artic crammed full of cutting edge broadcast equipment 10 times! A massive thank you to those who came and visited and to the exhibitors and speakers who helped make the Tour fun, informative and something to build on for the future – watch this space for an announcement shortly. Enjoy the issue and don’t forget the next live show is 19th June 7pm www.broadcastshow.com/live.
