I like even years, and I am not superstitious of course. It just means that
there is a greater chance to socialise around a big screen somewhere
with friends and family. Coming up in the next few weeks, if not already
upon us, are The Commonwealth Games, Wimbledon and the Tour De
France. What do all these have in common in 2014? They are all in the UK,
with Le Tour having the first two stages in Yorkshire. Add in some good
weather and production and hire companies, as well as the local pub, will
all be very happy!
The World Cup is said to be the biggest sporting event in the world so
unsurprisingly will probably steal the main stage of viewing numbers with
88 broadcasting rights holders present inside the broadcast centre in
Brazil. As large screen TV’s are fl ying off the supermarket shelves in time
to catch the action there will be 4k cameras in place for the fi rst time in
the production set-up. Maybe in 2018 we’ll be able to view their output in
our living rooms? For those interested in the boxes delivering the coverage
then take a look at Will Strauss’s article on page 40.
I am sure everyone has had a data disaster in the past and mostly we
learn by our lack of back-up or how we look after this content. Imagine
a whole year of content lost with no chance of retrieval. That’s just what
happened to Nino Leitner and some years on, now an award winning DoP
& fi lmmaker, he writes about his lessons learned.
This issue also gets back to basics with dialogue searching, explores
disaster recovery, looks at simplifying your workfl ow as well as having top
reviews from leading cameramen and working pro’s. If you do get some
time away from the TV or are sport adverse then this issue is a must for
everyone! So come on England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland at the Games in
Glasgow, Frome for Le Tour, Murray for the tennis and England for the
cup… where’s that lucky rabbits foot when you need one.
Enjoy the issue...
