At the cutting edge of what we might experience in the future is the BBC’s Research and Development team and the excellent Commonwealth Games was an opportunity for them to showcase this innovation. As a taster this included live coverage broadcast over 4G mobile networks for the fi rst time in the UK, live virtual reality giving 360 degree views and Ultra-HD offering viewers the chance to zoom and explore the venue. Venue Explorer offers a single fi xed wide angle UHD camera in a stadium with you choosing the part you wish to zoom / focus on and the audio being relevant to that frame – and all maintaining HD resolution. You can read all about it on page 70 From next month we’ll be introducing a new group of student fi lmmakers and ahead of this we’ve set the scene with the new studio recently commissioned at the University of Portsmouth. This ties in nicely with the topic of the month where we look at studio lighting, virtual sets (and reality), Q&A and prompting to name just a few. Aside from kit reviews and discussion we have some words for wisdom for wannabe Directors which according to some is a craft that can’t be taught any more than you can teach art. There are however some directional skills shared in this issue by David Crossman where he points out “my job is a director, not a dictator”. Read it all on page 42 From behind his edit desk Larry Jordan is this month shivering at the phrase “don’t worry we’ll fi x it in post” and gets to grips with chroma keys and planning with his nine rules for green-screen production. With IBC just around the corner you can see some preview news and from next month expect a few changes… Enjoy the issue TAKE A FRESH LOOK AT YOUR ARCHIVE twitter.com/tvbay At SGL we take the business of managing your content very seriously.
