NEWS MANIPULATE & EDIT “ Another month, another free version of what was once a premium bit of picture and sound manipulation software. As creative apps migrate to cloud-based subscription and freemium models, and following hard on the heels of what Blackmagic Design did with Da Vinci Resolve and now Fusion, Avid is introducing a free version of its Pro Tools audio software. It’s very much a cut-down version that only saves projects to the cloud, cannot open, save or import or export Pro Tools sessions and uses only the plug-ins that are available inside the app. BUT, because it has many of the same recording and editing features as the full blown version, it does provide a good taster of how the product works. As such, it has generated much excitement. It is also indicative of a general trend: software developers want to get the maximum number of people possible to try out their tools. By getting people in early, developers can then up-sell to the in-app options, premium subscription or full version. It is a model that has worked very successfully across consumer mobile games and apps. Although they’re not giving the full thing being away for free, it is a highly disruptive move by Avid. Like Blackmagic before them, it will certainly make other software developers and manufacturers sit up and take notice. That said, just because something is fee, there is no guarantee of long-term success. Avid once offered a video editing application called Avid Free DV. No, I haven’t heard much about that recently either. “ Colour Grading Soho-based high-end picture post facility The Look has purchased a second Quantel Pablo Rio 4k colour and finishing system. The new kit will operate alongside the facility’s existing Pablo Rio 4k and Pablo systems to form the backbone of its long-form and trailer work. The Look’s owner and senior colorist, Thomas Urbye said: “The Quantel Pablo Rio is still the most powerful all-rounder available. It has an excellent grading toolset Stand G17 and panel, and also an advanced, easy to use multi-layer timeline, support for Avid effects and ProRes and DCP exports. It’s the fastest most interactive system for an operator to use when client attended, especially with its huge GPU horsepower. Most importantly, we have no need to go into another system to deliver a film or drama.” Pablo Rio runs on high performance PC hardware and exploits NVIDIA Maximus multi-GPU technology. It is available as software only and as a range of Quantel-backed turnkey systems. In 2014 The Look worked on eight feature films, the BBC TV drama Quirke and more than 40 cinema trailers. www.quantel.com Music Stand C44 AKM Music has released AK174 POSITIVITY Volume 2, a collection of positive upbeat royalty free music designed for promotional and corporate video production.
