NEWS MOVE & DELIVER “ Broadcasting, as we know it, is changing. Not only is the TV set being supplemented by mobile phones and tablet computers as the viewing devices of choice, but, according to the results of a survey of 1,500 people commissioned for KPMG’s latest Media Tracker, catch-up TV viewing is now more popular in the UK than live TV. Apparently some 42% of people said they watched catch-up TV, compared to 24% watching programmes as they are broadcast. Streamed live or downloaded, whether to a TV, mobile or tablet, viewers want their programmes anytime, any place and pretty much anywhere. Imagine Communications’ purchase of RGB Networks reflects that trend. On signing the agreement Charlie Vogt, the CEO of Imagine Communications, said: “The acquisition of RGB Networks, combined with our innovation in video playout and distribution, enables us to strategically navigate the convergence of IP, mobility, and the Internet, which has changed the way we consume entertainment and information.” One of the big challenges for broadcasters is the complexity involved in multi-screen delivery. There are simply countless permutations of device, platform, operating system, resolution, network etc etc. This is where RGB Networks Just-in-Time Packaging (JITP) could come in. Rather than having to ready a programme for all the various formats in advance – as you do when using a Content Delivery Network - it bundles up a programme into the appropriate streaming protocol only once it has been requested by a viewer on a specific device. When working with Imagine on video on demand (VOD), cloud DVR and TV everywhere services this could potentially reduce a broadcaster’s bandwidth and storage costs. Video-over-IP Joseph Fiber Solutions (JFS) has reached an agreement with VITEC that will see it supply the EZ TV IPTV system throughout North America. Recently installed as the in-house video delivery system at the Ralph Wilson Stadium, the home of the Buffalo Bills American Football team, VITEC’s EZ TV is an enterprise-grade technology that makes use of existing IP networks for delivering, recording, and managing live and on-demand video. “The Internet has transformed the way our customers deliver and manage video channels, not only for external viewers, but for internal audiences too,” said Yohay Hahamy, the chief executive of Joseph Electronics, the parent company of JFS. “IPTV is a great alternative to traditional RF CATV systems and has been very popular with stadiums and broadcasters alike. The modular EZ TV IPTV System is, with good reason, the most deployed H.264 enterprise IPTV delivery system in the world. Adding it to our product lineup means our customers can now implement an advanced, scalable IPTV solution on their own networks, and do it quickly.” www.josephelectronics.com 30 | KITPLUS - TV-BAY MAGAZINE: ISSUE 98 FEBRUARY 2015 KVM switchers “ However, its real value may be in the simplified workflows and future-proofing that it offers. Broadcasters are very keen on both of those benefits right now and Imagine will know that. Stand P50 Argosy has signed a distribution agreement that will see it bring ATEN’s IT connectivity and management products to the broadcast market. The ATEN product range includes KVM (keyboard, video, mouse) switchers and extenders. “Computers are a central part of any broadcast installation today,” said Chris Smeeton, sales director at Argosy. “Our mission is to make infrastructures as simple, reliable and cost-effective as possible. Good KVM solutions, including KVM drawers for rack mounting, are going to be ever-more important to broadcast engineers, and we are delighted to be able to offer the best to our customer base worldwide.” The agreement also covers other products from the ATEN range including format conversion boxes and mains distribution panels (MDUs). Argosy is exhibiting at BVE 2015 (Stand P50), where the company will show ATEN products alongside its various cables and connectors. www.argosycable.com
