NEWS MANIPULATE & EDIT “ The announcement during NAB of Avid’s acquisition of Orad took quite a few people by surprise. Partly because it hadn’t been mooted but also because Avid is borrowing $100m in order to purchase the Israeli virtual studios, graphics, servers and MAM firm. Avid has stated that it believes Orad will “help it continue to deliver on the company’s Avid Everywhere vision, by adding key content creation and media management solutions to the Avid MediaCentral Platform.” As well as matching the company’s stated “growth strategy” it is a move that continues Avid’s transition from being a “post-production” technology company to one that permeates the entire production process. With Orad’s graphics creation capabilities on board MediaCentral will start to become a real option for live sports and live events production. Sure, this isn’t totally new to Avid but for those people old enough to remember Avid as an editing technology company, it is part of a sea change. I doubt that anyone involved in the first Avid demos at NAB 1988 of a non-linear replacement for ¾-inch to ¾-inch cuts only editing would have seen this coming. Much like Las Vegas, over the last 30 years Avid has changed beyond recognition. We should expect further transformations in the years ahead. “ Audio interface Calrec has announced the fi rst technology developed in conjunction with DiGiCo since the formation of the pro audio group in August 2014. DiGiCo consoles can now integrate onto the Hydra2 network via DiGiCo’s brand-new “anything in, anything out” Orange Box equipped with Calrec’s new Hydra2 interface card. The Orange Box takes a variety of DiGiCo Multichannel Interface (DMI) cards that easily convert audio from one transport protocol to another. Calrec has developed an interface card that allows third-party manufacturers to integrate Hyrda2 into their equipment. www.calrec.com Searching? broadcast cameraman Search with full details of hundreds of GTC accredited Camera Operators, Lighting Cameramen, DoPs and specialist cameramen, why go anywhere else? www.gtc.org.uk/search 14 | KITPLUS - THE TV-BAY MAGAZINE: ISSUE 101 MAY 2015
