NEWS MOVE & DELIVER “ It was interesting to see the various LTE Broadcast tests that were being carried out last month, not least the one at a Spanish football match (see below) but also the trial in the UK during the FA Cup final. Based on evolved point-to-point Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service (eMBMS) standards, LTE Broadcast is designed to distribute a single instance of a piece of content to multiple users. It can be used to deliver high-quality video to mobile users in device- dense locations such as sports venues without lag time or delay. Christophe Delahousse, president, Thomson Video Networks says: “All over the world, 4G LTE networks are changing the way consumers think about accessing video on their mobile devices. The growth of 4G LTE-capable devices is exploding, and video traffic over the Internet and mobile networks will reach unprecedented levels over the next few years. The rapid evolution and innovation of mobile consumer devices is not only driving an ever-increasing demand for HD services, but also differentiated value-added services such as live in-event broadcasts” The important thing about LTE Broadcast is that it allows carriers to allocate a portion of spectrum that can be used to deliver video content to users without compromising the rest of the network. Data is only sent one way, like a traditional broadcast, so it neither contributes to, nor is affected by, network congestion. At a sporting event this could allow spectators to access instant replays or see the action in real-time from a different angle using their phone. Of course, very few devices are LTE Broadcast capable yet but that will come. For sport coverage, the mobile carriers will need to partner with rights-holders too. But with those things in place, the opportunities for LTE Broadcast could be huge. In urban areas it even has the potential to replace over-the-air radio and TV transmissions.
