NEWS MOVE & DELIVER Encoding IPTV/OTT The Canal+ Group is using the ViBE EM4000 HD/SD encoder to aid the migration of its CanalSat satellite service to an all-HD delivery infrastructure based on the H.264 codec. Working in tandem with Thomson Video Networks’ NetProcessor multiplexer/video processor, Amethyst III high-density redundancy switch and MediaFlexSUITE network management system, the ViBE EM4000 is providing eight-channel compression density together with broadcast-quality SD-to- HD up-scaling. A multiscreen pay-TV platform that runs in the cloud and provides viewer personalisation options and advanced social media capabilities is the main focus for Comigo at IBC. The back-end offering, which is based on the company’s ‘Experience Engines’, can be integrated with an operator’s existing Business Support Systems and Operations Support Systems such as provisioning, billing, CRM, CDN and CMS. Comigo is also showing its mobile apps for smartphones and tablets and an Android-based set-top box offering that supports HEVC and 4K. File processing OTT processing Ateme has revealed that TDC, the Scandinavia OTT provider, will use its Titan File encoder and transcoder for VOD, SVOD, TVOD and Playout fi le processing as it launches a range of new services. The virtualized software application, based on Intel server class CPUs, provides fast high video quality processing without the need for GPU or other hardware acceleration. It supports various codecs - including HEVC, H.264, MPEG2 - and resolutions from mobile to 4K. TDC recently acquired Blockbuster and Norwegian cable operator Get. Ole Rebner, head of VOD and EPG operations for TDC, said: “We needed a solution that would enable us to transcode fi les for playout, STB and OTT VOD, with premium video quality, while meeting our bandwidth and server storage constraints.” Sky is using Elemental Technologies’ software to process and deliver its OTT TV service Now TV and its mobile TV service Sky Go. Elemental Live is being used as the video processing engine in a workfl ow controlled by Elemental Conductor. During live streaming Sky channel IP inputs are fed to Elemental Live software which encodes original and aggregated linear content in real time for delivery to mobile devices and the web. For the Sky VOD workfl ow, Elemental Server systems transcode content into multiple formats and encrypt it for high-quality, protected output to consumers devices, including Apple TV, over the Sky Content Delivery Network. Matt McDonald, director of broadcast services for Sky, said: “Elemental offers the platform we require for live video and VOD streaming and rapid deployment of new services that delight customers.” 32 | KITPLUS - THE TV-BAY MAGAZINE: ISSUE 104 AUGUST 2015
