NEWS MOVE & DELIVER OTT OTT and path-monitoring capabilities have been added to the Volicon Observer Media Intelligence Platform Multiviewer option. Multiple live or recorded programmes, complemented by frame- accurate data, can now be viewed on a monitor wall or other display. Using the newly introduced dashboarding traffic-light approach, users can monitor linear and OTT channels, and all their renditions, and quickly identify technical issues. Gary Learner, chief technology officer at Volicon, said: “Our enhanced Multiviewer option enables users to tailor dashboards to their monitoring roles and responsibilities, with ‘red light’ and ‘green light’ status applied to individual streams or to configurable groups of streams and displayed along with video and metadata windows according to user preferences. With this approach, it’s possible to streamline quality-of-experience OTT monitoring at the station level and at the largest and most complex network operations.” volicon.com PLAYOUT AUTOMATION Indiana University’s PBS TV station WTIU has installed a complete automation and storage management system from NVerzion. The Component Level Automation System Solutions (CLASS) platform will control the WTIU’s file-based workflow from recording to scheduling, playback, and non-real-time delivery. The system includes NControl on-air playlists, NGest professional dubbing and recording software, NPoint video preparation software and media events capabilities and NBase SQL media database manager. WTIU operates four digital channels that are broadcast to 29 counties in West and South Central Indiana. nverzion.com INFRASTRUCTURE Airtel Digital TV, the direct-to-home (DTH) arm of Bharti Airtel, has deployed a compression headend system from Harmonic in an effort to improve its customers’ HD viewing experience and increase bandwidth efficiencies. Harmonic’s Electra X2 advanced media processor, which enables high-quality, low-bandwidth MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding of SD and HD video content for live DTH services, is at the heart of the headend. Powered by the Harmonic Pure Compression Engine, the Electra X2 media processors support a range of video formats and codecs for satellite delivery, including HEVC. The Electra X2 media processors will be integrated with Harmonic’s ProStream 9100 stream processor and ProView 7100 integrated receiver-decoder (IRD) and controlled by Harmonic’s NMX video network management system. “Harmonic’s compression solution allows Airtel Digital TV to deliver superior video quality at low bit rates while adapting to next-generation video compression standards such as HEVC,” said Dan Taylor, general manager, India, at Harmonic. “It can reduce OPEX and drive new business growth by simplifying the launch of additional HD channels.” harmonicinc.com CONTENT The European Commission has proposed an update to the EU audio-visual rules that govern linear and on-demand television. An evaluation of the 2010 Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD) suggests that video platforms that organise and tag a large quantity of videos will have to protect minors from harmful content and protect all citizens from incitement to hatred. It also proposes that broadcasters should continue to dedicate at least half of viewing time to European content and that on-demand providers will be obliged to ensure at least a 20% share of European content in their catalogues. europa.eu 26 | KITPLUS - THE TV-BAY MAGAZINE: ISSUE 114 JUNE 2016
