The acronym still holds true though as ‘Over The Top’ and this issue seems a good opportunity to stand by our rule that there is never a stupid question and everything is deﬁned on page 34. With UHDTV here then it’s only a matter of time before IP replaces SDI and True IP will need to be fully implemented for this to happen; right now simply connecting SDI from your camera to a switcher during a critical broadcast gives a warm feeling that you will still be connected at the end of the transmission. What is it that IP offers, is it even ready and as reliable as required right now? Whatever angle you want to explore in the world of IP then we’ve got it covered inside. If you are a Facebook user then you may have noticed the ability to deliver live content to the world from your phone. As you are scrolling your feed live streams can pop up covering the ﬁnal moments of the Wimbledon ﬁnal, a friend’s wedding, breaking news such as the EU referendum and most notably the recent disturbing incidents from the USA – a wide mix of traditional broadcast quality and amateur breaking news style footage. In the same way that smart phones turned everyone into a budding videographer platforms such as this are bringing streaming to the masses. It is predicted that by 2020 a massive 82% of internet trafﬁc will be video and Facebook (there are others) are driving this change. Take a look at page 38 on the changing face of streaming.
