Welcome ISSUE 118: OCTOBER 2016 kitplus.com X Welcome. So the annual whirlwind that is IBC is behind us leaving in its wake a word that sticks in my mind - ‘interoperability’. We’ve been talking a lot about IP over the last year and you’d be hard pressed not to have noticed the news angling towards IP interoperability and as such IBC, often seen as a show championing new and future technology, had a zone showcasing exactly this. Magazine Office: PO Box 6090, Newbury, RG14 9BB, UK Switchboard: +44 (0)1635 237 237 Editor: Simon Tillyer, firstname.lastname@example.org Production Editor: Matt Robbins, email@example.com IP has the ability to transform how we work, for the better and not just because ‘we can’ and as such the Alliance for IP Media Solutions (AIMS) has been created with seven organisations, including the EBU and SMPTE, getting their heads together. Advertising: Jonathan Highett, firstname.lastname@example.org Louis Rushton, email@example.com Accounts: Lucy Pittock, firstname.lastname@example.org I spoke to the busiest man at IBC, Chairman of AIMS Mike Cronk, where a live IP demonstration was being shown to prove that the technology from many manufacturers not only interoperates but that is can be used in live production - that’s today, right now. This is not a concept. Events: email@example.com Design and artwork: John Fryer, john.fryer@flytrapltd.co.uk Mike explained that IP technology offers a lot of advantages and customers are moving in that direction but the industry was fragmented with multiple proprietary proposals from different vendors so we needed to find a way to work together and come up with a common standard. AIMS is the biggest cheerleader of a standards based organization in our industry with a mission to foster the adoption of a common ubiquitous set of protocols for IP interoperability. Mike’s interview is here so if you’re interested in learning more and seeing the IBC Interoperability zone then take a look. AIMS was formed less than 12 months ago and now has 54 companies following its lead spanning the entire workflow from ingest to delivery - it will affect you in a way that other technology changes in the industry might not have done.
