Welcome ISSUE 120: December 2016 kitplus.com Welcome. The last issue of the year is one of my favourites, our annual look at new technologies brings up thoughts of what may be beneath the Christmas tree this year... For years we’ve been working towards UHD and with prime shows such as ‘The Grand Tour’ now streamed in 4k we are finally there (subject to bandwidth and TV set of course) only to discover that it’s not enough for everything. Unwrap that neat square box and strap on your shiny VR headset and once the novelty (remember 3D?) is over you might be thinking 4k just doesn’t cut it. To really get immersed and make this content totally believable then we’re going to need more pixels! Santa Cinegy explains more on this on page 40 with Santa Ericson predicting 2 million Xmas trees may have such boxes under them in 2016 with gaming once again taking a lead role, see page 48 on how a once experimental technology is now flowing into the mainstream. You’d need a very big tree to fit all the companies now signed up to AIMS – truly a game changing move in the world of IP interoperability. Even Santa’s elves, allegedly closely aligned to the heart of evolving standards, have been surprised at the soaring speed this alliance has gained pace. AIMS brings together broadcasters, technology vendors and standards organisations to maximize interoperability of IP broadcast standards. The star on the top of my tree for 2016 has got to be AIMS so Santa’s hats off to those 50+ companies now working together on the roadmap for the future. Too early to fit under the tree were the many visitors to the KitPlus Show last month. Thanks to all those who came and the exhibitors who supported the show, do take a look at the gallery online and on page 53. Not wanting to wish the year away but we’re all set now for 7/11/17 – save the date!
