BVE As sure as the sun rises in the East, BVE 2015 (24-26 February, Excel, London) will be awash with talk of IP and generally ways in which the industry as a whole can become more effi cient and effective with content creation and distribution. From the 300+ exhibitors on the show- fl oor to the 120 hours of free seminars, those trends will be everywhere. Although no UK broadcasters have committed to broadcasting (or streaming) in 4k yet, current rumours suggest that both BT and Sky could have 4K-capable set-top boxes on the market this year – and content to go with it. And, of course, lots of people already shoot in 4k - and indeed 5k and 6k – for artistic reasons too. As such, BVE will be a good place to learn more about those higher resolution-related challenges – from storage to cabling - that are still left to overcome. industry experts from BBC Academy, Raindance Film Festival, BECTU and many more. With entry by application only*, these will be tailored for established professionals as well as newcomers. Amongst the highlights are CV Clinics, DPP AS-11 training, script writing master classes and social media workshops. On the camera side, Blackmagic Design, Sony, Panasonic, Holdan, JVC, ARRI et al will doubtless have 4k capable equipment on show, but they are not the only interested parties. Throughout the production chain, be it a big replay server from EVS or a tiny action camera from Go Pro, there will be opportunities to see and learn about 4K. There are a host of seminars too in the dedicated 4k Theatre. While talk of a resolution revolution will be everywhere, so will enhancements to current working practices and the kind of subtle evolutions that will hopefully make our lives easier. The use of IP is potentially one of those. As an industry we are already bringing content to people’s homes via the Internet but soon we could be cabling up studios, OBs, post houses and more using standard Ethernet connectivity, which has the potential to be extremely cost effective. IP-related things to look out for at BVE include Futuresource’s ‘The pros and cons of IP’, the panel discussion ‘Moving towards end-to-end IP and lining it to the cloud’, curated by Cognizant, and the BBC session ‘Implementing Ultra HD over IP at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and Looking to the Future.’ As a very hands-on event, BVE will be providing learning opportunities at every turn. One example is the newly enhanced training hub that will sit within the Skills and Networking Zone. Here, master classes will delivered by SGL has an established history serving the archive needs of broadcast facilities around the world. It almost goes without saying that BVE is also a great networking opportunity, whether you want to use it as a chance to catch up with old friends, reaffi rm business relationships or make new contacts. One place to do this is the show bar, obviously, but there are also more formal ‘facilitated’ networking sessions. These are also taking place in the Skills and Networking Zone and will run for an hour, accommodating 40 people. For more details see the website. There’s also Raindance – Live! Ammunition!, a competition for producers, writers and fi lmmakers to pitch their ideas a panel of fi lm makers, and the chance to win a complete live production suite worth over £6000, featuring a TriCaster Mini and two JVC cameras – visit NewTek EMEA’s Facebook page to enter. And if that wasn’t enough, the keynote presentations feature Catherine Hardwicke, the director of Twilight and the upcoming Miss You Already, and Richard Ayoade, the award-winning writer, director and actor. Both Richard and Catherine will share their experiences of UK production and add a touch of glamour to proceedings. It promises to be a great show.
