NEWS CAPTURE & PRODUCE There is good news and bad news this month for anyone that has ordered an URSA Mini 4.6K or a Micro Cinema Camera from Blackmagic Design (BMD). The good news is that they are shipping and that the images are said to be incredible. The bad news is that neither camera features a sensor with a global shutter, as was promised at their unveiling back at NAB 2015. According to BMD, the development of the global shutter in these cameras has taken longer than expected. This explains why shipping had been delayed. In a statement the company said: “For the past six months, Blackmagic Design engineers have been working extremely hard to resolve the issues. As the performance of the global shutter is not up to the high quality level that Blackmagic Design strives to give its customers, Blackmagic Design have decided to ship both of the cameras without the global shutter feature.” Instead they are being made available with rolling shutters (at least for the foreseeable future). Will Strauss BMD goes on to say that people that have beta tested the cameras on all types of different projects have “reported incredible results” that their feedback suggests that “the cameras should not be delayed for this feature as the main benefits of the cameras are the wide dynamic range, and that this dynamic range is only available when running without global shutter.” Blackmagic is perhaps a victim of its own popularity and success here. It strives to please by constantly announcing amazing sounding cameras that promise to capture great pictures and are brilliantly disruptive. This builds anticipation but also expectation. Red took this approach for a long time too, and occasionally fell short of its own predictions before generally pulling something better out of the bag. It’s a risky strategy. Often it is better to under promise and over deliver rather than the other way around. Gyrocopter Cameras Blackmagic Design has announced that the Blackmagic URSA Mini 4.6K and the Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera have commenced shipping but without the global shutter feature that was due to be included. The company said that development had taken longer than expected and that it wasn’t currently up to the quality that was required. “We understand and accept that some customers who have back ordered an URSA Mini 4.6K may like to change their order as a result of this feature change,” the company said. 6 | KITPLUS - THE TV-BAY MAGAZINE: ISSUE 112 APRIL 2016 BeyondHD are the first operator of a brand new genre of commercial aircraft.
