A Symply SAN solution for Drago Broadcast Services

A Symply SAN solution for Drago Broadcast Services

Symply, a Global Distribution brand has announced the sale and installation of a high performance fibre channel shared storage system for Madrid-based Drago Broadcast Services, part of Grupo Secuoya.

When Drago determined that it needed a new solution to ensure storage performance and resilience, it turned to Tangram Solutions, also of Madrid, and Symply.
Tangram firstly installed a 600TB Infortrend NAS with 40Gb Ethernet interfaces, offering sufficient capacity to store all the Raw assets and act as a common repository for Drago Broadcast Services’ and their different departments, including: ingest, low-res transcoding, editing, and post-production. The NAS is also used to keep online copies of materials, this data is then automatically backed up on to an LTO Tape library following pre-set policies, and these assets can then be transported and archived outside the facilities. This is easily achieved by having a single centralised NAS storage unit.
Once the NAS was operative the SAN system was installed to serve the different editors, the configuration consists of the main server (SymplyULTRA) linked to a complementary one (SymplyIO) that provides additional processing and bandwidth to the system. This is in combination with two expansions, increasing transfer rates and storage capacity to reach the nearly 400 TB of storage required, and up to 6GB/s aggregate transfer rates.
Secuoya Group Operations Director, Raúl Pino Vaquerizo, said, “The challenge was to give high-speed access to artists who perform parallel real-time colour correction and colour grading, while giving access to the same materials for quality control or file delivery to customers. We determined that the performance and resilience of the hardware and reliability of the software the Symply uses (i.e., the Quantum StorNext® on Linux CentOS 7) would ensure that Drago Broadcast Services would never have to turn away work or risk missing deadlines.”
The demanding formats used today require a system that offers high transfer rate ratios so that play-outs and editing in 2K and 4K are fluid. This enables artists to carry out their projects more efficiently. A major advantage of the Symply system is its cross-platform compatibility, which allows its clients to use their preferred OS and tools. This, in turn, means that there is no need to change the operators’ workflow as it is easily integrated into existing processes.
Vaquerizo added, "Formats are evolving in such a way that image quality is improving continuously to meet the users' demands. Therefore, the need to be able to work with increasingly large files is becoming one of the most important issues to consider in any installation.”
Symply resolves this issue with installations that are future proof by allowing not only up-scaling storage capacity to several petabytes, but fully scaling-out by increasing also the system’s bandwidth. The ability to scale to over 35GB/s throughput while maintaining the same low latency eliminates any worries of not being able to meet audiovisual industry demands now, or in the future.
The increasingly high amount of data stored in single volumes requires an additional security layer. Symply’s patented RAID structure provides virtual protection against multiple hard drive failures in multiple RAID sets with no data loss. It also provides for an accelerated drive rebuild, thus reducing the possibility of cascading drive failure.
Tangram Solutions’ priority was to optimise Drago Broadcast Services workflow to eliminate any bottle necks. The collaborative workflow facilitated by the Symply system enabled different users to simultaneously work with the same materials, speeding up the processes necessary to complete a wide range and number of complex projects.

PROJECTION ARTWORKS TRANSFORMS INTO PIXEL ARTWORKS Posted: 17/10/2019
PROJECTION ARTWORKS TRANSFORMS INTO PIXEL ARTWORKS

Projection Artworks, the award-winning specialists in light and pixel technology, have rebranded to Pixel Artworks, celebrating the company’s evolution and expanding use of innovative technologies as it continues to move into new global markets.

Tom Burch, Managing Director of Pixel Artworks, said, “For over a decade, our pioneering creative, technical and delivery expertise has grown alongside the incredible advances in pixel-based display technology. For years we’ve been telling clients’ stories through the best medium for that project whether that be OLED, lighting design, LED or projection mapping. It’s time our name reflects this.

“Our clients used to come to us when the nights grew darker and people thought of projection, now our talented team of nearly 50 people across two continents can design virtually limitless concepts that excite, explain and inspire in any environment – from digital out-of-home to giant airport activations, to choreographed live shows and 360-degree immersive experiences. We paint with light, and the world is our canvas.”

Recent projects from Pixel Artworks include the innovative entrance stage to the globally broadcast International Swimming League competition, a large lighting and projection mapping show for the grand opening of The Macallan distillery in Scotland; a touring pop-up pavilion to promote Expo2020 in Dubai featuring LED and entire room of LCD panels, lighting displays and touch screens; and a sensitively portrayed outdoor live immersive experience for the Second World War Museum in Gdansk to mark the 80th anniversary of World War II, with choreographed live theatre, lighting design and projection mapping.

In addition, Cinegy has now optimised its entire product line to be 8K-ready and deployed in the cloud. Broadcast Solutions to Enter the Market for Used OB Vehicles with a New Service Posted: 17/10/2019
Broadcast Solutions to Enter the Market for Used OB Vehicles with a New Service

Antti Laurila, Global Sales Director at Broadcast Solutions, on the move towards used equipment: “Over the years we see a growing need for used production vehicles in many countries. Some of our customers want to upgrade their production fleet and are looking for means to fund the purchase by selling their used OBs. Therefore, it was a logical step to use our know-how and sales network to help them find the right company to sell to.”

Within the new business unit, Broadcast Solutions acts as the agent mediating between the seller and prospective new customers of used OB vehicles. Part of the service is, of course, refurbishments of the used OBs, depending on the overall condition and the needs of the buyer. The company will also use its technical expertise to advise of potential changes that could be possible and technology choices which may provide additional benefits to the new owner. The company also offers an enhanced full support agreement, tailored to protect both equipment and vehicle. With these continuity schemes, buyers can be confident that their new investment will be protected round the clock by engineers they can trust. Identifying necessary technical upgrades for the vehicles to be future-proof investments is a huge benefit for both parties, causing a frictionless sales process and adding more options for the use of certain vehicles.

Broadcast Solutions offers this service worldwide and starts with already four OB trucks in stock, ready for purchase.

VuWall Increases Control Room Productivity With New VuWall2 Features Posted: 16/10/2019
VuWall Increases Control Room Productivity With New VuWall2 Features

VuWall, a leader in video wall control and AV network management, today announced an update to its flagship video wall control and collaboration platform, VuWall2. New enhancements to the powerful software solution include colored borders and color detection, support for the Milestone XProtect unified security platform, further integration with the IHSE Draco tera matrix, and extended KVM support of IP sources.

"A control room must be a highly flexible environment where end users can monitor multiple streams of information efficiently and effectively in order to make critical decisions quickly and accurately," said Paul Vander Plaetse, CEO. "This update to VuWall2 is part of our commitment to ensure our customers work as optimally as possible. Each of these enhancements serves to make the integration and operation process seamless, which is key when there's an ever-increasing number of equipment, data streams, and sources needed to support real-time decision-making."

Colored Borders and Color Detection
VuWall2 boosts operational awareness and productivity with new colored borders around windows that are automatically triggered by events such as intrusion detection or fire alarms. The borders' width and colors are configurable and can even be enhanced with a flashing effect, increasing operator responsiveness. Furthering the platform's automation and awareness capabilities, the software also includes a color-detection feature that triggers a new layout on the video wall after a color change has occurred in a specific pixel location on a source computer running process-control applications. This enables unattended operator stations to remain under 24/7 surveillance.

Netflixs French-Language Original Series Osmosis Shot with Cooke S7 i Posted: 16/10/2019
Netflix and rsquo;s French-Language Original Series Osmosis Shot with Cooke S7 i

Imagine that in the not too distant future, a dating app could match you with your soulmate by mining the data in your brain. That’s the premise of Osmosis, the French-language original series from Netflix; however, things don’t always go as planned. Cinematographer Jean-François Hensgens was chosen by Netflix to shoot the first six episodes of the eight-episode series with multiple directors, including Julius Berg, Pierre Aknine and Mona Achache, while maintaining visual and artistic continuity from episode to episode.

Starfish provides compliance recording to The National Library of Sweden

Starfish Technologies, a pioneer in transport stream processing and advertising insertion, has supplied a multi-channel compliance recording system to Kungliga biblioteket, The National Library of Sweden in Stockholm, Sweden, in cooperation with Starfish’s Swedish partner Lanlink Digital Broadcast.

The system utilises Starfish’s ‘Verify’ compliance recording technology which can record multiple channels of live TV broadcast and features a fully managed system with auto failover. Built using generic IT hardware from HP, it includes the Starfish web-based monitoring application to view and manage the operation of the N+N configuration. Input signals are presented as encoded transport streams from both the satellite and terrestrial feeds for each channel automatically switching between the two feeds when detecting a missing input.

Starfish Marketing Director Peter Blatchford said, “We have been building systems in Sweden for many years with companies such as TV4 and Red Bee Media and are delighted to have been chosen to now supply The National Library of Sweden. The Starfish Verify Compliance Recording System is highly configurable and utilises our expertise with transport stream processing and web based system monitoring’.

Shanxi Television in China purchases second Calrec Brio console for its new studio Posted: 16/10/2019
Shanxi Television in China purchases second Calrec Brio console for its new studio
China-based Shanxi Television has chosen a Calrec Brio36 audio console for its news programming and multi-purpose talk shows. The Brio is installed in a new studio, which was initially used for covering the China National Youth Games, held this August, with more than 10 hours of live broadcasting produced in the studio each day. This is the broadcaster’s second Brio installation with the first installed a year ago.

Mr. Wu Jie, Supervisor of the technical department of Shanxi Television, commented, “We have been very happy with our first Brio, which has proved to be intuitive to use, with great sound quality and stability. The last point is very important. The intuitive I/O connections and simple-to-use software and surface helped us save a lot of time during installation in this new studio and with the training, too.”

Shanxi Television is a network in the Taiyuan and Shanxi province that broadcasts in Jin Chinese. For the China National Youth Games, they received signals from multiple venues and the hosts and guests adding commentary and comment in the studio.

Mr. Wu Jie explains that they set up the new studio in 10 days, with five days of training, with the Brio’s clear design making it easy for operators to master quickly. Also, functions like swapping a fader on an individual strip, ALT-input, auto mixing and the fact that labelling channel strips is easy are also highlighted, along with the support Calrec partner RAC Pro provided throughout the process.

Later this year, Shanxi Television will be working with 4K content and they anticipate that the Brio’s 5.1 capabilities and expandability will make the use of 4K go smoothly.
