Artjail raises the bar with Baselight colour grading
Independent VFX boutique Artjail has added a Baselight grading suite in each of its locations: one in its New York studio, and one in Toronto their newest studio that opened in January. Bringing grading and VFX together will strengthen the studio’s workflow for complex VFX projects. It will also further their reputation for short form advertising projects and long form work.
Artjail was established in 2008 by Steve Mottershead, who remains Creative Director and VFX supervisor of the group. He maintains a goal to assemble nimble, highly talented artists and focus on quality over quantity.
Colour was always a requirement for the business, but there was an opportunity to up the stakes and introduce Baselight into the pipeline. “Through the years we’ve done some grading on Flame and Resolve, but for me Baselight was always the holy grail – not to mention most of our favourite colourists were on the system,” Mottershead said. “Adding Baselight to our offering has really upped our colour game. We finally feel like we are competing at a higher level.”
Senior colourist Clinton Homuth explained the positive attractions of Baselight. “Being an overwhelmingly visual person, Baselight’s user interface is a real positive for me,” he said. “I find myself moving a lot faster, which means more time to explore. I’m a really big fan of using Baselight’s tools in combination with one another – using blending modes to smash a bunch of various looks together is a large part of my experimentation and look development process.”
While New York and Toronto operate largely as self-contained facilities with their own projects, Artjail is excited by the prospect of tighter integration between grading and the various VFX pipelines. The FilmLight BLG render-free workflow – based on the small and portable OpenEXR BLG file that can be used to share looks between Baselight and NUKE, Flame or Avid – allows editors and compositors to access the full grade, in real time, simply by exchanging the compact BLG.
“As far as integration with VFX goes, colour hasn’t completely found its place before or after yet,” explained Homuth. “So we are excited about being able to make tweaks in comp and not having to run everything through the grading suite again – this will save a lot of time. And I would love not to have to render 35 different passes of a shot as the CG gets updated.”
Having recently completed some VFX heavy spots for Realtor.com, Virgin Mobile and Geico, Homuth said, “Becoming a collaborator in the actual physical creation process is always exciting and a departure from the norm.”
“In a post world where software is mostly made for mass prosumer use, it’s nice to have a relationship with a company that takes its users into consideration,” concluded Homuth. “FilmLight is really trying to give us not only the best feature set but also an extensible toolset,” he concluded. “In the colour journey, with more flexibility in the tools there is more diversity in the results.”

Network 10 Selects AWS Media Services For Richer Content

Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com company, today announced that Network 10, one of Australia’s largest television networks, has selected AWS Media Services to support its video transport structure for remote production in South Africa for its upcoming season of the reality TV series I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here, and to enhance the streaming delivery for live-streamed sports and Network 10 shows, including The BachelorAustralian Survivor, and MasterChef Australia.

Network 10 is one of the first companies in Australia to use AWS Elemental MediaConnect, a cloud video transfer service, which provides secure and reliable delivery of live video content. The technology enabled Network 10 to transport video from Kruger National Park in South Africa to its Sydney-based production studio for I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here during the 2019 season, and will be used again in the upcoming seventh season.

Using a combination of AWS Elemental MediaConnect and AWS Advanced APN Technology Partner, Aspera’s High Speed Transfer Service, Network 10 reduced its production turn around window from overnight to less than two hours, and in some cases, only a few minutes.

Earlier this year, National Rugby League (NRL) turned to Quicklink in order to improve and optimise their content offering and production operations. NRL’s webcasts both on their official website NRL.com and on the NRL app have driven digital audience engagement to new heights in 2019.

NRL implemented the Studio Browser into their workflow for HD quality, bi-directional audio/video contributions. The Studio Browser solution enables NRL to very easily introduce players and coaches via a simple web browser to their Studio for interviews on their ‘Inside NRL’ weekly feature and other studio shows.

The Studio-in-a-box was also implemented at NRL’s head office for the weekly football briefing press conferences. The portable, all-in-one solution has made it very easy for NRL to deploy and is fully remote-controllable from the Quicklink Manager at their Studio control room.

“The Studio-in-a-box is a compact unit with simple inputs/outputs that has made it easy for us to set up almost anywhere. We have been able to facilitate a regular production operation with this technology that was not on our original radar when we procured the technology and it’s been easy collaborating with Quicklink to validate things when required” says Alex Agaciak, NRL Media Services team.

Arqiva, the international satellite and media services provider, has been selected by the international television company A+E Networks EMEA to provide on-demand content for the channel’s Amazon Prime on demand service in Germany and UK.

A+E Networks® EMEA, has been an Arqiva customer for over a decade, with the existing partnership spanning playout and connectivity across Africa and the Middle East, UK DTH satellite capacity and on-premise VoD processing services across EMEA (including the UK). As part of the new contract, Arqiva will manage the content processing, packaging and delivery of A+E Networks EMEA existing archive content in both UK and Germany, from where it is currently stored on Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) and Amazon Simple Storage Service Glacier, to Amazon Prime.

One of A+E Networks EMEA’s key requirements was for the solution to be able to process all VoD requests as close to the cloud-based archive as possible in order to minimise content movement and therefore avoid costly cloud egress into on-premise data centres. Based on its latest hybrid on-premise/cloud offering, the solution implemented by Arqiva is the first to feature a completely cloud-contained journey, where content is taken from the online archive, processed packaged and delivered to Amazon Prime. This not only ensures significant cost-savings but transcoding in the cloud using AWS Elemental MediaConvert also enables Arqiva to process more simultaneous jobs at a far quicker pace.

This includes judges, supervisors, town and school boards in addition to ballot propositions and referendum questions. Bannister Lake is an established leader in managing election data. The company's Elector software is used by leading Canadian broadcasters to cover elections while Chameleon is equipped with a robust election module geared toward U.S. and other styles of elections.

Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Shoots Rare Show Content for Mumford and amp; Sons

Blackmagic Design today announced that award winning live director, Steve Price, used the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K to create a cinematic, slow motion backdrop for Mumford & Sons’ recent appearance at the iHeart Radio music festival in Las Vegas.

Although the rise of LED technology has seen screens become an essential creative element of concert and festival productions, some artists, including the British indie folk band, prefer the focus to be on the live performance, with some clever staging and lighting to help lead the atmosphere.

With two weeks to go till the band were due to headline the festival, where the stage was almost entirely built from LEDs, a new approach was critical. “Other acts on the bill included Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Def Leppard and Chance the Rapper, so it was important to stand out visually and create a unique identity for the set given the diverse lineup,” begins Steve.

“We decided to keep things simple with a classically beautiful ‘analogue’ aesthetic, with some slow motion, based around nature and people,” he reveals. “Time was tight as we were also in the midst of a US tour, and I needed to get back to the UK to pick up kit.

“I needed a camera that was capable of 120fps, that also wasn’t too bulky for a one-man shoot. That brought me to the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K which allowed me to travel as light as possible, while still being able to produce the stunning image that I like in Blackmagic’s larger cameras.”

PlayBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box Powers New Thai University HDTV Channel

Rajamangala University of Technology (RMUT) in Thailand has chosen a Neo-19 series Channel-in-a-Box playout system as the heart of a new online TV channel. Operated by staff and students of the university's Mass Communication Technology faculty, the channel will form a basis for training in the techniques of broadcast television content production and distribution.

ATG Danmon Completes News Studio Systems for Cardiff Universitys School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies

ATG Danmon announces the completion of a full broadcast-quality news studio facility for Cardiff University's School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies. The project coincides with a relocation to new city-centre premises situated next to BBC facilities. Cardiff University will use the facility to train the next generation of television, radio, online and printed-media journalists. Herefordshire based CJP Broadcast Service Solutionsprovided the installation services for the project.

 

"We were invited to propose a turnkey solution based on an outline specification provided by the university," explains ATG Danmon Managing Director Russell Peirson-Hagger. "The project comprised a large TV studio and dedicated gallery, a smaller TV studio with its associated gallery, plus a broadcast newsroom. Both galleries connect via SDI to Vizrt media, graphics and automation. Avid iNEWS is also integrated."

 

"The system links to a news presentation suite where a remotely controlled camera and two-way video feed allow the newsreader to talk to a newsroom reporter. The systems simulate the functionality and processes of a real broadcast environment, the output being used for academic review."

 

 

"We worked in partnership with CJP and Cardiff University staff to design and integrate a complete solution that kept within the budget and provided the specified level of functionality that is required by the teaching staff. This was successfully achieved before students returned after the summer recess.

DPP launches industry-wide sustainability initiative

The DPP Committed to Sustainability Programme provides a self-assessment checklist that enables companies to record their progress in implementing sustainability policies, and awards them a score out of five. Completion of the assessment entitles a company to display the Committed to Sustainability mark, and to publicise their engagement with the Programme.

The score is private to the company concerned, but it can be used in procurement submissions, in marketing, and as a motivating force for further improvement. The DPP will monitor the average score for the media industry as a whole, and report regularly on the sector’s progress.

The Programme is available to all companies, free of charge, irrespective of whether they are a member of the DPP.

“We all have an obligation to take action to address the climate emergency.” says DPP Managing Director, Mark Harrison, “This programme creates a simple and effective means for all media companies to ensure they understand how they can minimise their environmental impact - and record their progress.”

The Committed to Sustainability Programme is enabled by DPP member company Atos, which, along with other members, shared its own expertise to help the DPP shape the new scheme.
