Bitmovin partners with Akamai to offer advanced video encoding capabilities to its global customer base

Published: 04 April 2019

Bitmovin, a world leader in online video technology, announces it has been qualified as a video transcoding partner by Akamai, the intelligent edge platform for securing and delivering digital experiences.

Akamai has worked closely with Bitmovin since first announcing its plans to retire its Media Services on Demand (MSOD) transcoding service. Akamai’s global customer base will be able to leverage Bitmovin’s simple, reliable and high performance transcoding solution - fully integrated with Akamai NetStorage and Media Delivery products.

“Streaming TV providers, content creators and publishers using Akamai now have access to Bitmovin’s next-generation encoding capabilities. We’re helping joint customers take advantage of the scale and capacity of the Akamai Edge and deliver high-quality video optimized for delivery across multiple networks and to any device,” said Jon Alexander, Senior Director, Media Product Management at Akamai.

Akamai’s global users now have complete access to Bitmovin’s advanced, cloud based encoding capabilities, all available as part of their usual video workflow. Bitmovin Video Encoding offers per-title, per-scene and three-pass features that automatically select the best encoding options according to the complexity of each piece of content, adjusting bitrate requirements to optimize the delivery of each individual asset. This reduces bandwidth consumption by applying the minimum bitrate required to maintain perfect visual quality. Akamai customers will also be able to use multiple codecs, including next generation options such as AV1 and VVC, to ensure the best possible consumer experience across multiple devices. Full support for ad insertion, plus a wide range of digital rights management (DRM) solutions, means using Bitmovin represents a complete end-to-end encoding solution.

“Akamai is a true world leader in digital content delivery, we’re proud to be able to give its global customers complete access to our full range of cloud encoding capabilities - all within a single platform. Together, we offer a seamless way to deliver fantastic quality video to audiences anywhere, on any device,” said Stefan Lederer, CEO at Bitmovin.
