Following close on the heels of UK elections in early May, millions of Spanish voters recently went to the polls in June to cast ballots in regional and municipal elections. In both cases the ongoing analysis and voter results were represented in real time with sophisticated graphics designed by Brainstorm Multimedia's Production Services Department.
Spanish broadcasters Antena 3 and Canal 9 used Brainstorm graphics to illustrate turnout, trends and eventual results using specialised software to invoke maps, domino effects, pie charts and more.
Brainstorm's acknowledged expertise in election night graphics spans many years. In the UK, BBC News has a multi-year contract with Brainstorm's Production Services Department to provide election coverage graphics that are fast, flexible and compelling - all of which are significant factors to ensure ongoing interest. This is particularly important as the BBC's viewing figures, typically strong during elections, were exceptionally high this year.
According to Brainstorm Multimedia's Director of Production Services, Monica Vctor, "We have a tremendous depth of experience in many areas of graphics production for mainstream news, weather and sport of course, but providing highly customised graphics for election coverage is a particular specialty of ours."
For Antena 3 in Madrid, Brainstorm's team developed a graphics suite that capitalised on the company's expertise in providing 'enhanced reality', which combined Antena 3's physical studio with Brainstorm's virtual studio and associated graphics. This is the first time this approach has been taken by Spanish national television.
Regional broadcaster Canal 9 in Valencia also took advantage of the Brainstorm team's enhanced reality skills, including virtual sets, 3D graphics, and touch screen graphics to illustrate real time analysis and results.
Vctor adds, "It's difficult to match an actual studio with a virtual one and make it look realistic, but in both cases an untrained eye could not tell where reality left off and virtual reality began."
Brainstorm's team uses its acclaimed "eStudio" graphics engine, still the market's fastest with unlimited broadcast graphics power and design options to generate a range of virtual set scenarios and innovative 3D designs that have the advantage of being able to instantly update as election results come in. This powerful software provides presenters with the ability to instantly and effortlessly enable viewers to visualise important election news and developments for viewers.
Brainstorm CEO Ricardo Montesa said, "We are often chosen because our software makes it very easy to identify a developing story and respond almost instantly with graphics to illustrate it. We have applied years of experience to provide the most trusted, advanced real-time graphics software available and, as a result, broadcasters worldwide depend on Brainstorm speed and reliability for important, high profile programmes such as local and national elections."
