Commentator Operated Outside Broadcasting Equipment For Glensound HD Voice

The result of adding a Glensound HD Voice Broadcasters Mobile Phone to a dedicated commentary mixer, is the RECCE HD.  With the long history of designing and building commentary units for sport and news, it is perhaps unsurprising Glensound has harnessed HD Voice technology and inserted it into a purpose built portable commentators unit.

The RECCE HD is an evolution of the Glensound ISDN codecs such as the classic GS-GC5 and the GS-GC25, with Glensound HD Voice replacing ISDN as the link.  There are over 10,000 of these ISDN commentary units in use by broadcasters around the world.  Glensound HD Voice is the replacement to ISDN for voice remote broadcasting, which is completely wireless.

The RECCE HD has an inbuilt 3 channel mixer (mic/line), 12V phantom power and a high quality compressor/limiter on each channel.  A 3 input headphone amp allows 3 commentators to monitor a mix of themselves, the return audio cue, or an external input.  The unit is fully portable using 2 D type cells making it a practical solution for mobile reporting.  External DC power is available.

The audio link is made over the 3G (UMTS) mobile phone network and setup is minimal; insert a standard network SIM from a network that is HD Voice compatible, make a call to another HD Voice compatible phone and 7kHz audio broadcasting has commenced; no long cables or physical connections inhibiting the scope of movement or location.   There are currently 34 countries offering HD Voice, including the UK, on Orange, and 3.

The unit embraces HD Voice technology which is based on AMR-WB (Adaptive Multi Rate -Wideband) allowing a mobile phone call to be made over the 3G (UMTS) network.  This achieves a call with 7kHz of audio bandwidth; a significant increase from the 3.4kHz previously offered by the standard GSM 2G.  The extra bandwidth enhances the lower frequency response, as well as doubling the standard bandwidth, which improves the audio quality making it clearer with greater definition.   Whats more, the network views it as a voice call rather than data ensuring zero call quality fluctuation and no additional data charges.

The RECCE HD is a completely wireless solution that allows a two man commentary team to report on an event, using a genuine Glensound Commentary box including monitoring.  It gives them 7kHz audio bandwidth, for less than £3100.00 including Glensound HD Voice units at each end of the link.  We think many broadcasters will find this a very attractive proposition. Commented Glensounds Marc Wilson.

The RECCE HD makes a broadcasters life easy.  With acute simplicity in its set up, 7kHz of audio bandwidth and a cost /performance level that has not previously been available.  Expect to see the RECCE HD cropping up at sports grounds around the UK very soon.

RECCE HD £2095.00 (ex VAT)

GS-MPI005 HD Studio Unit £1295.00 (ex VAT)

DPA Captures Sound for Netflix Original Film: Oxyg and egrave;ne

When it came time to record the Netflix original French-language film, Oxygène (Oxygen in English), the audio team had quite the challenge in front of them. The premise of the scientific horror film focuses on a scientist, played by French Actress Melanie Laurent, who has lost her memory, awakens, trapped in a medical pod and must find her way out before the oxygen levels diminish. Given the setting, the pod is used for 90 percent of the film and, with its tight quarters, Production Sound Mixer Ken Yasumoto and Boom Operator Josselin Panchout knew they needed a reliable and unobtrusive microphone solution, which they found in DPA Microphones.
