Dejero to Showcase Latest Field Contribution, Content Distribution, and Connectivity Solutions at NAB 2020 Posted: 18/02/2020
Dejero to Showcase Latest Field Contribution, Content Distribution, and Connectivity Solutions at NAB 2020

Dejero, an innovator in cloud-managed solutions that provides Emmy® award winning video transport and Internet connectivity while mobile or in remote locations, is returning to NAB with an exciting display of technologies that include enhancements to its renowned contribution, distribution, and connectivity solutions.

Shining a spotlight on the capabilities of their latest EnGo mobile transmitter, WayPoint receiver’s support of SMPTE ST 2110, the importance of first- and last-mile connectivity, and cloud-based content distribution, Dejero’s NAB booth is guaranteed to appeal to a wide spectrum of broadcasters and media organizations.

Second Emmy Award Win

In January 2020, it was announced that Dejero had been awarded a second prestigious Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award and will be honored as recipients at a ceremony taking place at the Wynn Hotel in Las Vegas on Sunday, April 19th, during NAB 2020. The award, in the category of Video over Bonded Cellular Internet (VoCIP) technology, recognizes Dejero’s innovation in the industry, and is attributed to the development of its patented Smart Blending Technology and unique Hybrid Encoding Technology. The technologies work in concert to form a tightly integrated system that responds in real-time to changes in network quality and video content complexity. This has helped transform how broadcasters contribute live content from the field using cellular networks, providing newsgathering crews with greater flexibility in terms of the location from where they can transmit a live shot, at a fraction of the cost of conventional uplink technology.

Last year, Dejero was awarded its first Technology and Engineering Emmy® Award for 'excellence in engineering creativity', honoring a decade of achievements in the field of live transmission driven by its vision of reliable connectivity anywhere.

New EnGo 260 mobile transmitter makes NAB debut

The latest version of Dejero's renowned EnGo mobile transmitter will be on display at NAB for the first time. Featuring Dejero's Emmy® Award-winning Smart Blending and Hybrid Encoding technologies, the 5G-ready EnGo 260 weighs 30% less than its predecessor, features a screen that is 85% larger, and now includes a 3-hour internal rechargeable battery and global modems for simplified international travel. Built with aircraft aluminum construction and polycarbonate ABS bumpers, the professional-grade EnGo is designed for durability to withstand on-the-go daily use by news, sports, and live production crews.

Compact CuePoint low-latency return video

At NAB, Dejero will be unveiling a new, smaller form-factor CuePoint server for use in field environments where it can be easily racked into mobile carts or vehicles. This follows the launch of the 1RU CuePoint 100 at last year's NAB. The low-latency return feed servers simplify talent cueing, production and confidence monitoring, and real-time teleprompting in the field. With as little as 250 milliseconds of latency, CuePoint servers keep teams at the broadcast facility and remote location synchronized, by sending video and audio, alongside teleprompting feeds, to production teams in the field to facilitate the creation of compelling live content. Up to eight return video and teleprompting feeds from the broadcast facility can be seen in the field by the talent on a tablet or dedicated monitor above or below the camera, or on multiple mobile devices by camera operators, field directors, and technicians.

WayPoint support for SMPTE ST 2110

The Dejero WayPoint 204 receiver makes the IP transition easier for broadcasters embracing the SMPTE ST 2110 suite of standards. As the first Dejero product to support SMPTE ST 2110 standards for professional media industries, WayPoint 204 reconstructs video transported over multiple IP connections from Dejero transmitters, decodes HEVC or AVC, delivers four channels of balanced IFB, and provides four outputs supporting SMPTE ST 2110. For broadcasters using SDI workflows, Dejero will be debuting a new, smaller form-factor of the WayPoint at NAB for use in field environments, where it can be easily racked in mobile carts or vehicles.

New GateWay 200 series for reliable general-purpose connectivity in the field

A new fanless networking appliance for nomadic and mobile connectivity, Dejero GateWay 200 provides fast, reliable, and secure access to the public Internet, private networks, and SaaS providers while in nomadic or mobile situations. Recently added features include increased reliability on any type of IP connection and faster file transfer methods. Dejero will also show how the GateWay can be used for backup connectivity as part of a disaster recovery plan, and other use cases that solve first- and last-mile connectivity challenges of broadcasters and media organizations.

IronRoute for Media - cloud-based content distribution

The IronRoute for Media solution is tailored to the needs of broadcasters and media organizations by combining the link diversity, service quality, and centralized management benefits of software-defined blended connectivity, with the flexibility and scalability benefits of a cloud-based workflow for cost-effective global distribution over IP networks. IronRoute blends broadband and cellular (3G/4G/5G) alongside satellite connectivity from Intelsat’s global network. The cloud-based solution also simplifies the simultaneous distribution of live and file-based content to multiple locations anywhere in the world, whether it be network affiliates, station groups, or to other broadcasters and media organizations in point-to-point, point-to-multipoint, and multipoint-to-multipoint scenarios.

To see these new developments and find out about more exciting announcements that will be made at the show, visit Dejero at booth C1307.

LiveU 2019 State of Live Report Confirms Continuous Strong Growth in Live IP Broadcasting Posted: 12/12/2019
LiveU 2019 State of Live Report Confirms Continuous Strong Growth in Live IP Broadcasting

LiveU today presents its annual ‘State of Live’ report based on data gathered from its global customer base of thousands of users. The findings reflect the substantial growth in IP news and sports broadcasting with a 50% increase in the number of LiveU units used to stream live events and 250% increase to around 20 million in live sessions overall.

HEVC continues to play a key role in live transmission, which is pivotal for live sports productions. This is due to the higher quality video performance and bandwidth efficiency enabled by HEVC technology. LiveU reports a 65% growth in HEVC units deployed worldwide and over 400% growth in HEVC-based sessions. Nearly 50% of the field units used to stream sports are HEVC-based with almost 80% of sports sessions transmitted in HD.

The increasing deployment of cellular bonding technology for live sport coverage has been evident worldwide. Following the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™, Kevin Callahan, VP, Field Operations & Engineering, Fox Sports said, “We always get energized if there is a huge buzz at home and this World Cup surpassed all our expectations with the success of the US Women’s soccer team. LiveU’s LU600 HEVC portable transmission unit provided the backbone for our ENG shoots that were not at the stadium, enabling us to increase the number of live feeds. We also sent content to multiple locations simultaneously using LiveU’s Matrix IP cloud video management platform, making the content available to Fox TV stations that wanted to integrate live shots into their newscasts.”

Ineos 159 Challenge Marathon Run with Eliud Kipchoge Uses LiveU to Create Dynamic Production Gallery for Documentary

On October 12th this year, renowned marathon runner Eliud Kipchoge made the world sit up, watch and listen as he ran the first sub two-hour marathon, setting an unofficial world record, clocking a barely believable time of 1:59:40 in the Ineos 159 Challenge.

The event took place in Vienna, Austria, with Kipchoge running a time almost two minutes faster than previously run. In the build-up to the event, LiveU’s long-time Austrian partner, ETAS High-Tech Systems GmbH, was contracted by Austrian production company Filmhaus Wien, who in turn was working with Ridley Scott Creative Group, Amsterdam, to provide technical assistance in the production of a documentary about the event.

The challenge was to create an OB truck-based production gallery to allow real-time camera feed monitoring and control.ETAS hired and prepared the production OB truck.15 ARRI Alexa-equipped camera crews were deployed around the course, linked to 15 LiveU LU600 HEVC portable transmission units. In the truck there were five quad servers with IFB for wired and wireless intercom. There were three 4K quad multiviewer screens. ETAS also provided the camera crews with LiveU training.

ITV Sport Deploys LiveU Technology at the 2019 Rugby World Cup for Enhanced Live Coverage and Disaster Recovery Posted: 31/10/2019
ITV Sport Deploys LiveU Technology at the 2019 Rugby World Cup for Enhanced Live Coverage and Disaster Recovery

ITV Sport, premier UK sports producer for the ITV network, has turned to LiveU to provide an enhanced viewer experience at the 2019 Rugby World Cup (RWC) and as a tertiary disaster recovery (DR) solution, backing up satellite and fibre feeds.

ITV Sport is using portable LU600 HEVC units around the country in three teams, each providing a range of additional material beyond match coverage. These roving teams, with embedded reporters, send their material direct to ITV Sport in the UK for both edits and live reports. This enables the producer to concentrate on the content without having to worry about how the material gets back to the UK. Additionally, highlights presentation links are also sometimes fed via LiveU.

Roger Pearce, Technical Director, Sport, ITV Sport Productions, said, “We’ve used LiveU with our reporting teams for a number of years successfully to enhance coverage. At this year’s RWC we have two separate jobs for LiveU: live/store/forward material from our reporting teams and DR feeds from our presentation studios and OBs.”

Pearce explains that the idea to use it as a traditional contribution path only came to the forefront when they were looking at low-cost options to provide high-quality DR feeds that are completely diverse to normal fibre and satellite delivery. After testing using existing LiveU infrastructure, it proved a simple and cost-effective solution, according to Pearce.

LiveU Expands Live Streaming for South Africa Horse Racing World Posted: 28/10/2019
LiveU Expands Live Streaming for South Africa and rsquo;s Horse Racing World

LiveU technology is being used to boost fan engagement across South Africa’s popular horse racing industry. Replacing traditional satellite, fiber and microwave technology, LiveU’s portable field units are being deployed to create exciting live coverage from the race tracks themselves, inside betting centers, and around award ceremonies and special events. Heading up this trend are Tellytrack Horseracing, Highlights and Sports Betting Television, and Gold Circle Horseracing and Betting – two key players in the country’s sporting world.

Tellytrack started to use LiveU for their filler program around the races, following an extensive testing period. LiveU backpack units are now deployed in different regions around the country, providing live crossings and special segments. The LiveU feeds used for TV broadcasts are then streamed via the same channel to its website and social media platforms.

Wesley Lloyd – Operations Manager at Tellytrack, explained, “LiveU gives us the flexibility to walk around, enabling us to broadcast live from places we couldn’t go before. For example, we can go and interview the jockeys in the stables at the far end of the track by simply sending a camera operator out into the field with a backpack, some batteries, a camera and a LiveU unit. In the past, we would have had to use complex microwave services with three or four cameras.” Lloyd continued, “Going live from the betting shops has also enhanced our coverage, enabling us to connect with our customers and make everything more relatable – the fans can have their say and feel part of the action. We’ve also used LiveU for award ceremonies and special events in shopping centers to get more feedback from the public, with excellent signal levels every time.”

Gold Circle has been testing the viability of the LiveU solution since early 2018 for both camera signal acquisition while following the horses and in the distribution of content to supplement and as a substitute for SNG (satellite newsgathering) trucks.
