DigiBox takes delivery of first BirdDog P200 cameras

DigiBox, one of the leading UK distributors of market-leading technologies for the broadcast, video, and pro-AV industries has taken delivery of the first BirdDog EYES P200 NDI® production cameras available in Europe.

The BirdDog EYES P200 camera is equipped with BirdDog’s own silicon chip that was developed from the ground up to encode and decode full NDI.

DigiBox Sales Manager Phill Lane said, “We are really excited to have received our first shipment of P200 cameras, the demand for full NDI PTZ units is growing and the BirdDog units offer a range of features that others in the market can’t deliver”.

The EYES P200 camera utilises a Sony CMOS backlit sensor and imaging module, providing sharp images, along with extremely fast zoom and focus. The P200 delivers frame rates up to 1080p60 with a 30x optical zoom and allows you to output SDI, HDMI and NDI simultaneously. This versatile unit can be powered by PoE+ meaning that power, video, audio and Audio Intercom can be run using one cable when working in NDI.

Lane added, “ The BirdDog EYES P200 is a truly remarkable camera. The mechanics allow for very smooth movement, combined with other benefits such as the high-end optics make it perfect for sports, news, live events, and a variety of other applications where image quality is paramount.

BirdDog Chief Marketing Officer Eamon Drew said, “We’re incredibly proud to start first customer shipments of the world’s first full bandwidth NDI camera. The global demand for P200 has been well beyond our expectations and it’s exciting to be able to work with DigiBox to get them out to our customers throughout Europe”.

Cobalt Iron Extends Compass Platform With Advanced Support for Service Providers Delivering BaaS Posted: 12/11/2019
Cobalt Iron Extends Compass Platform With Advanced Support for Service Providers Delivering BaaS

Cobalt Iron Inc., a leading provider of SaaS-based enterprise data protection, today announced that it has extended its mature Compass™ enterprise software-as-a-service backup platform with advanced features that bring tremendous value to service providers who sell Compass as their backup-as-a-service (BaaS) offering. Those advanced features, which are unique to Compass, allow service providers to manage complex environments with multiple tenants in a secure manner and provide those different users with appropriate access while reducing the service provider's operational costs and improving the quality of service.

Compass was built from the ground up with multitenancy and extensive automation in mind. That means BaaS service providers can easily:
• Set up multiple users with different access privileges.
• Assign different pricing methodologies to different systems.
• Customize reporting and management with company logos.
• Integrate with existing accounting and service ticketing systems for automated billing.

Compass' comprehensive multitenancy capabilities support complex organizational dynamics across an ecosystem of service providers, partners, customers and their internal organizations, and distributors. Support includes management, monitoring, visibility, chargeback, reporting, and resource utilization by organization.

Thomson Broadcast, Supported by Viaccess-Orca, to Secure Malian Public Broadcaster DTT Deployment

Viaccess-Orca (VO), an Orange Group company and a global leader providing OTT and TV platforms, content protection, and advanced data solutions, announced today that the Malian Transmission and Broadcasting Corporation (SMTD) in West Africa has chosen VO's cardless Conditional Access System (CAS) to secure its free-to-view and pay-TV platforms as part of a nationwide government initiative to roll out digital terrestrial television (DTT). Thomson Broadcast has been tasked with handling the deployment for SMTD's new infrastructure, while also supplying the video headend, contribution and distribution network, and TV transmitters.

"We are excited about offering digital terrestrial television in Mali, as it will significantly improve our viewers' quality of experience while offering a broader range of content choices," said Ismaila Togola, CEO of SMTD. "Working with Thomson Broadcast and Viaccess-Orca, both leaders in their respective industries, will help us get this new DTT service securely deployed to market."

Testronic achieves Dolby Vision Certification Posted: 12/11/2019
Testronic achieves Dolby Vision and reg; Certification

Testronic, a leader in quality assurance (QA), localization services, and compliance for the film, television and games industries, has achieved Dolby Vision® Certification following an intensive period of training and investment in their Burbank facility. In order to achieve this certified status, the facility was subjected to rigorous review and is now configured and set up to meet the standards of a Dolby Vision certified facility.

Dolby Vision® certification ensures that all of Testronic’s Master QC personnel have been trained by Dolby and that the facility has been commissioned by Dolby engineers. Dolby Vision post production tools and workflows give content creators what they need to efficiently create both Dolby Vision, HDR, and legacy SDR content. Dolby Vision ensures that the look they create in the color suite stays true when experienced across TV’s PC’s, tablets and mobile devices.  Testronic can now test that this stays true across all OTT Platforms.

Broadcasters look to virtual programming to exploit their content libraries Posted: 12/11/2019
Broadcasters look to virtual programming to exploit their content libraries

More than a third (36%) of broadcasters are failing to utilize their content library despite facing increasing competition from streaming services, according to research by ATEME, the emerging leader in video delivery solutions for broadcast, cable, DTH, IPTV and OTT.

Although almost all (98%) of the broadcasters surveyed use their content library to create new channels for particular events or occasions, the majority (82%) are impeded in the ability to do it quickly, unlike their streaming counterparts. 44% of broadcasters revealed it takes them up to three days to create a new channel, while over a third (38%) say it takes them up to a week, which not only hinders their ability to capitalize on events but could result in potential revenue loss.

“With a continuous influx of competition from all angles, broadcasters must begin to do more with their content libraries. Creating new, virtual channels would allow broadcasters to take advantage of topical and cultural events, such as award season, during which they could use their back catalogue to quickly develop one-off channels to celebrate winners as they are announced,” commented Remi Beaudouin, Chief Strategy Officer, ATEME.

As broadcasters explore ways to use technology to maximize their content, almost two-thirds (60%) of broadcasters are utilizing virtual broadcasting to create one-off channels, while of the broadcasters not currently doing virtual broadcasting 70% said they will do so within a year.

A Choir Performance in Kuala Lumpur Achieved Crystal Clear Sound Thanks to DPA Microphones Posted: 12/11/2019
A Choir Performance in Kuala Lumpur Achieved Crystal Clear Sound Thanks to DPA Microphones

DPA Microphones’ recently launched 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphone was used to great effect in Kuala Lumpur when a choir of 12 men and women gathered in Independence Square to mark the 50th anniversary of the Department of Enforcement, Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The event, entitled Hari Penguatkuasa DBKL, featured a parade in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Enforcement Day. It culminated in a live performance by the DBKL City Hall Choir who performed in front of an audience of approximately 2,000 people.

Mr Ajun Mubari, head of Malaysian audio rental company Mubari, says DPA’s 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphones were chosen to amplify the choir because their integrated shock mount and wind screen made them ideally suited to outdoor use. “The 4097 microphone is awesome and very easy to work with,” he says. “We used one pair to cover the choir group and positioned them on either side of the choir who were standing in a semi-circle. The concert generated very high sound pressure levels – in excess of 90dB – but, thanks to the 4097’s high isolation, the sound coming from the stage monitors (which were placed in front of the choir and behind the microphones) did not affect the available gain during the performance. This was a huge advantage as it meant we could capture the true sound of the choir without picking up any other sound.”

LAURA PODOLAK WADDELL JOINS GRAVITY MEDIA TO MANAGE ITS NORTH AMERICAN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS Posted: 11/11/2019
LAURA PODOLAK WADDELL JOINS GRAVITY MEDIA TO MANAGE ITS NORTH AMERICAN STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS

Gravity Media, the leading global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors, has appointed former Pac-12 Networks Sr. Director, Content Production Laura Podolak Waddell as its new Director, Strategic Partnership Management for North America. Laura joins the team to enhance brand relationships with a focus on an ongoing studio operations project that Gravity Media is overseeing for a major media and technology brand.

After nearly a decade of local news production for radio stations in Colorado and California, Laura became part of Pac-12 Networks’ launch team in 2012. The considerable amount of broadcasting experience she gained during her time there has led her to join Gravity Media where she will bring teams across the country closer together to streamline production processes and improve content output for clients. As Laura emphasises, the role comprises everything that fascinates her about production; “compelling content, a fast-paced environment and all the unique personalities of content creators.”

Laura’s past seven years at Pac-12 Networks were focused on relationship building, enhancing communication across content teams and implementing production best practices. The biggest challenge she’s seen in the broadcasting industry over that time was engaging a young audience, finding out where the younger viewers are consuming content and what sports they’re most interested in watching to entice the next generation of fans. “Nobody can predict exactly where media consumption is going, but what we do know, is that people want to watch engaging content,” she notes.

Maggie Rogers Shines Brightly With Sapphire Touches Posted: 11/11/2019

MIRRAD supplies two Avolites consoles for Ben Everett’s design for producer, songwriter and performer’s headlining tour

A lot has happened in Maggie Rogers’ world since 2016, when a video of her demoing a then-newly-recorded song, “Alaska,” for Pharrell Williams at NYU went viral. Following opening slots on major tours with both HAIM and Mumford & Sons last year, Rogers dropped her own major label debut, Heard It in a Past Life, this past January, which charted in the second highest slot of the Billboard 200. Consequently, the artist has spent much of 2019 on the road in support of the album, performing a sold-out fall headline tour in such iconic venues as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Berkley’s Greek Theatre, and New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

The “look and feel” of Rogers’ tour this year has been a collaborative effort between the artist and Lighting Designer Ben Everett, who first started working with her when he lit Rogers’ first-ever show in London two years ago. Having toured with an impressive roster of bands over the past five years—including Bear's Den, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and The Dandy Warhols—Everett is now part of the UK-based MIRRAD team, which has been supplying a pair of Avolites Sapphire Touch lighting control consoles for Rogers’ 2019 worldwide trek.

Everett notes that he’s been using Avolites lighting consoles “pretty much since I started in the live music industry,” he shares. “I was lucky enough to learn on all of the early Titan software, and mainly used the Tiger Touch II and Quartz consoles to begin with. The features that kept me attracted to the desks at first were the ability to quickly create really impressive and intricate effects, and the user-friendly and multi-functional layout of the touchscreens. And while growing with the consoles over the years, the ease of being able to create cue stacks, key frame shapes, and pixel mapping really helps me in my day-to-day programming now.”
