Sound Devices 970 Takes a Ride with Renowned Audio Mixer for New Semi-Animated Childrens Series Posted: 23/07/2014
Sound Devices 970 Takes a Ride with Renowned Audio Mixer for New Semi-Animated Childrens Series

When Sound Mixer Richard Lightstone was looking to upgrade his audio cart with a Dante-compatible digital recorder for Disney XDs semi-animated childrens program Kirby Buckets, he turned to Sound Devices new 970. The Sound Devices 970, the companys first-ever audio-only rack-mounted solution, boasts an impressive 64 channels of Dante and MADI.

As an industry veteran, Lightstone has long been aware of Sound Devices and its storied name in the industry. I certainly know the Sound Devices reputation with their earlier products, he says. I had originally looked at their Video Devices PIX line and was considering it, but once I heard about the 970, which was strictly devoted to audio, I jumped at the chance to get a hold of it. The great advantage of using the 970 with Dante is that I can remove a huge amount of cable from my sound cart. Also, the sheer capacity of the 970 in terms of its high track count really made it stand out from the other products I looked at for this project.

Sound Devices and DPA Pair Up for On-Location 5.1 Surround Sound Capture Posted: 27/06/2012
Sound Devices and DPA Pair Up for On-Location 5.1 Surround Sound Capture

When Sound Designer/Supervisor Cameron Frankley and Sound Mixer John Fasal were tasked with capturing the ambient audio for the film the Hangover Part II in Bangkok, the team packed its Sound Devices 788T multi-track digital audio recorders and DPA 5100 mobile surround microphones, confident the gear would help them effectively secure the films 5.1 location audio.

Frankley and Fasal hit the streets of Bangkok, recording everything from the bustle of the marketplaces to the sounds of the cigarette boats and tuk-tuks (open air taxis) unique to Thailand. The pair visited every location that existed in the film, as they had access to rooftops, basements, marketplaces and intersections.
