Video Europe Goes Back to its Roots

Video Europe, leading digital cinema, broadcast and edit hire company has announced an operational restructure to streamline their business proposition.

In a strategic move decided in January and prior to the Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, the company is to return to their original and core business offering of equipment rental to the film and television industry. As part of the process, Video Europe is officially exiting the outside broadcast and flypack services market and is selling their OB trucks. The restructure will enable the company to refocus on three business channels: digital cinema, edit equipment rental and broadcast hire. No staff will be lost.

5G-Virtuosa project completes initial technical IP-based studio set-up

The participants of 5G-Virtuosa, the EU-funded project exploring 5G and virtualization in broadcast production, announced today that the first technical step of the initiative has been completed at Nevion’s Service Operations Center (SOC) in Gdansk, Poland. The step involves the integration of multiple products from various vendors, with most of the work done remotely because of the COVID-19 situation.

The purpose of the EU project VIRTUOSA is to explore “Scalable Software Defined Network Architectures for Cooperative Live Media Production exploiting Virtualized Production Resources and 5G Wireless Acquisition”. In practical terms, this means demonstrating through real-life examples how 5G can be combined with virtualization concepts to enable broadcasters to produce live content (such as sports or music coverage) more efficiently and cost-effectively across locations, to meet growing consumer demand.

Kraftwerk Specify PMC Speakers For Their Design Museum Show In London Posted: 17/03/2020
Kraftwerk Specify PMC Speakers For Their Design Museum Show In London

A PMC 7.1 surround sound system is being installed in The Design Museum, London, to support a new exhibition that focuses on legendary electronic music pioneers Kraftwerk and their 50 year impact on the club scene.

Entitled Electronic: From Kraftwerk to The Chemical Brothers, the exhibition runs from April 1st to July 26th 2020. It will evoke the experience of being in a club by transporting visitors through the people, art, design, technology and photography that captured and shaped the electronic music landscape.

A surround sound system based on PMC’s award-winning result6 compact nearfield monitors will be an integral part of the exhibition, which will feature a 3D show capturing Kraftwerk’s music and stage performances. As long term PMC users, the band were adamant that only PMC speakers should be used for this system.

Commonly referred to as the ‘Godfathers of electronic music’, Kraftwerk pioneered the genre in the 1970s and had an enormous influence on other bands, including The Chemical Brothers. Alongside the Kraftwerk 3D show, the Design Museum’s exhibition will allow visitors to step into the visual world of The Chemical Brothers for one of their legendary live shows, as visuals and lights interact to create a new three-dimensional experience by Smith & Lyall, featuring Grammy Award-winning track Got to Keep On.

iSize Technologies introducing BitSave v.2, the next-generation AI-powered Technology and SaaS Video Encoding Platform Posted: 16/03/2020
iSize Technologies to showcase BitSave v.2, the next-generation AI-powered Technology and SaaS Video Encoding Platform at NAB 2020

iSize Technologies, the London-based deep-tech company specializing in deep learning for video delivery, are introducing BitSave v.2, the next-generation ‘precoder’ for perceptual optimization of video content prior to subsequent encoding.

BitSave v.2 is a pixel-to-pixel neural-network solution that optimizes video frames before the pixels reach the video compression software according to the latest advances in perceptual quality metrics. It enhances details of the areas of each frame that affect the perceptual quality score of the content after encoding and attenuates details that are not important.

This is designed to optimally balance perceptual quality against encoding bitrate. The solution is data-driven, trained on large image and video datasets, with no hand-crafted parameters.

It incurs a single-frame latency, can be used with any third-party video encoder with no changes in the encoding pipeline, and can run in real-time for up to 4K resolution.

Grass Valley Solutions Underpin NEP Europe Expanded IP Production Capability for a Summer of Sport Posted: 12/02/2020
Grass Valley Solutions Underpin NEP Europe and rsquo;s Expanded IP Production Capability for a Summer of Sport

Gearing up for a bumper year of premier live sporting events, NEP Europe has bolstered its production capability with a host of Grass Valley live IP production solutions. NEP is growing its capabilities across its OB and flypacks fleet, strengthening its position as one of the world’s leading outsourced technical production partners to premier producers of live sports and entertainment.

At the core of the expansion are nearly 60 new Grass Valley LDX 86N cameras. The new cameras feature Grass Valley’s built-in DirectIP capability which was developed in conjunction with NEP. This unique technology allows NEP to send only the camera heads to the given location, while all other control for the cameras and the production can take place at an off-site location. With this latest purchase, NEP Europe now has over 500 native 4K Grass Valley LDX 86N cameras in its portfolio.

Paul Henriksen, NEP Europe’s president, said: “2020 is set to be a huge year for live sporting and entertainment events around the world. We’re excited about the opportunity to help clients deliver innovative live productions that bring consumers closer to the action, wherever they are and on any device. Drawing on our long-established relationship with Grass Valley, and the close collaboration with its R&D team, allows us to leverage best-in-class solutions that are a perfect fit. Grass Valley understands our business model and is unrivaled when it comes to delivering the support that we, and our clients, demand.”

NEP Europe also purchased 30 RefleX SuperXpander Kit lens adapters, which convert handheld cameras into a studio/field production system, plus a number of LDX C86N compact cameras and several grass valley switchers including the 6 M/E Kahuna 9600 with Maverik control panel and the Kula 3 M/E switcher. The switchers feature FormatFusion technology, innovative, built-in format conversion that seamlessly handles multiformat operations. The wider rollout of Grass Valley’s K-Frame, Kahuna and Kula switchers across NEP’s fleet allows for standardized workflows that ensure greater efficiency across the group.

Mark Hilton, Grass Valley’s vice president of live production, commented: “We’re delighted to be working with NEP once again and proud to be the clear choice when it comes to supplying live IP production solutions. As NEP readies itself for a demanding year of exciting sports and live content, we very much look forward to working alongside the company in the thick of the action.”
