Fast-forward to creative results with FilmLight at IBC2019

At this year’s IBC, FilmLight (Amsterdam, 13-17 September, stand #7.A45) is demonstrating new colour management tools and products designed to improve efficiency and flexibility for a wide range of workflows.

With colour grading an increasing feature across all content streams – from daytime TV to long-form drama series to feature films and beyond – client demand for premium quality grows, while timescales and budgets shrink. But with questions remaining about the long-term impact of many new technologies on the industry – such as HDR – streamlined and efficient workflows remain the most pressing requirement for facilities.
That is why FilmLight has focused development on building in flexibility and speed, and allowing more time to be devoted to creativity.
Leading the way is the new Blackboard Classic control panel. Blackboard Classic is designed within the same ergonomic profile as the popular Blackboard 1, with the addition of large high-resolution displays, a larger tablet and extendable connectivity. The Blackboard Classic sits between FilmLight’s soft-key Slate and Blackboard 2 panels, allowing Baselight artists to use a full-sized panel within budget constraints.
FLUX Store, FilmLight’s fast and highly cost-effective media-targeted storage solution, is gathering momentum across Europe with improvements including indexing for both Baselight and third-party storage, and FLIT (FilmLight Image Transfer), which uses the full network wire speed over 10/40/100GbE network links (or pair of links) to accelerate media copy operations. Recent installations have taken place at Panoptimo in Munich and Mikros in Belgium, with more in the pipeline as companies seek to take advantage of FilmLight’s expertise and understanding of what is needed to efficiently handle content in post.
IBC2019 also sees demonstrations of the forthcoming powerful FilmLight API, the new programming interface to the Baselight colour grading platform and Daylight, FilmLight’s dailies management and transcoding system. The FilmLight API is designed to automate common but time-consuming tasks, such as VFX transcoding and retrieving/setting metadata.
VFX and final grading can coexist more harmoniously with Baselight’s enhanced integration with NUKE, Flame and more. Input versioning – either via filenames or making use of the Open Clip XML format – means that a scene can be updated with new versions of shots, providing massive time savings in quick-turnaround VFX jobs where new versions are constantly arriving.
Autodesk Flame now supports FilmLight colour spaces and T-CAM – FilmLight’s well-respected colour appearance model – natively, with the same functionality available for OCIO (OpenColorIO) compatible applications coming soon. T-CAM has itself been enhanced, including better shadow details, more saturated shadows and pale skin tones, and less noise in underexposed images.
Improvements have also been made to editorial workflows for Avid and FCP. Avid integration allows minor edit changes made in Baselight – for example, when detecting cuts in a scene exported from Avid – to be round-tripped back via AAF, while the FCP X XML format is now supported within Baselight.
Other improvements to the grading experience, on show at IBC2019, include Baselight’s enhanced timeline with collapsing stacks and multiple tracks, improved keyers, trackers and grading tools, native production of IMF packages for Netflix, and the new Lens Correction feature, which can be used to both correct and apply radial lens distortion.
Visitors to IBC can experience FilmLight’s complete colour pipeline – including Baselight ONE and TWO, Baselight Editions for Avid, NUKE and Flame, and Daylight – on stand #7.A45.
FilmLight is also hosting the free two-day event, Colour On Stage, on 14-15 September in Room D201 within the Elicium Centre close to the show floor.

GB Labs FastNAS F-16 Nitro Installed at Kingdom Creative Posted: 17/02/2020
GB Labs FastNAS F-16 Nitro Installed at Kingdom Creative

GB Labs, innovators of powerful and intelligent media storage solutions for the media and entertainment industries, today confirmed that the specialist video production company, Kingdom Creative Studios, has installed GB Labs’ FastNAS F-16 Nitro storage system.

Kingdom Creative founder and Managing Director, Simon Harrison, said, “Our talented in-house team works closely with major brands¬ - primarily in automotive but rapidly expanding into new markets - to deliver powerful video content tailored to engage audiences on every platform, from television to social media.

“However, our expansion, coupled with the advent of 4K, multi-cam shoots and the increasing demand for rapid turnaround, meant that we reached the practical limits of what our existing storage system could do. We had to find a better way to manage and operate storage.”

For the majority of its existence, Kingdom Creative had relied on what many still rely on today, i.e., storing video content on individual drives, backing them up, and walking them up and down corridors or transferring them via couriers.

“As we began taking on larger and more complicated projects,” said Kingdom Creative Head of Creative Technology Ben Treston, “especially when collaboration between editors became important, it turned out that the old methods were no longer viable. Today, we have multiple editors working on many pieces of content from the same project. You can’t share individual hard drives and meet today’s expectations for speed and reliability in those types of scenarios.”

The FastNAS F-16 Nitro system meets those objectives for speed, reliability and value in shared storage. Unlike other NAS products on the market, FastNAS is purpose built to sustain heavy workloads and provide stable and reliable performance, based on best of breed technology exclusively developed in-house, and is comprised of a high-performance unit with unique hybrid disk technology, powered by GB Labs’ proprietary CORE.3 OS.

GB Labs CEO-CTO Dominic Harland said, “Kingdom Creative emerged from a motorsport world built for speed, and that’s what modern shared storage has been engineered to deal with. FastNAS F-16 Nitro easily accommodates the need for speed – and safety – when dealing with fast turnarounds and sharp bends.”

Broadpeak Performs World-First Video Unified Packaging and Encryption of DASH and HLS Posted: 13/02/2020
Broadpeak Performs World-First Video Unified Packaging and Encryption of DASH and HLS

Broadpeak®, a leading provider of content delivery network (CDN) and video streaming solutions for content providers and pay-TV operators worldwide, today announced that it has completed the world's first unified packaging and encryption of DASH and HLS formats. Using the latest version of its BkS350 origin packager, Broadpeak successfully delivered DASH and HLS video fragments using the same chunks (encrypted with CBCS) and container (CMAF) for both protocols, a unique capability that will optimize storage costs for OTT service providers.

Until CMAF was developed, HLS and DASH needed to be delivered in different containers. In addition, Apple FairPlay and Google Widevine used different encryption schemes (i.e., CBCS and CTR), creating the need for a different chunk for each streaming format (i.e., HLS and DASH) even with the new CMAF container. Now that Widevine allows CBCS encryption, it is possible to encrypt one CMAF fragment for both HLS and DASH formats. Broadpeak's BkS350 origin packager is the first solution to offer this capability.

Sinclair Broadcast Group to use Marquis Broadcast production storage optimisation and management tools

Sinclair Broadcast Group, one of the largest television broadcast companies in America, is deploying Marquis Broadcast’s Analysis Parking software with a new enterprise monitoring dashboard for its many facilities across the United States. During its expansion, Sinclair Broadcast Group has always focused on optimising best practices for its news technology and operations. Part of this focus was to streamline and simplify the management and monitoring of multiple Avid NEXIS® systems, helping users manage Avid projects and valuable storage space more efficiently.

Sinclair Broadcast initially deployed Marquis Broadcast’s Analysis Parking in three major sites. The software understands the relationships between Avid projects, folders, bins and media, and runs automated Avid NEXIS analytics and visualization processes, enabling each station to maximise the use of space on their Avid NEXIS storage systems.

Paul Spinelli, director of engineering at Sinclair Broadcast Group, explains: “As a group, we’re continually evaluating new technologies that can realise further operational benefits and efficiencies. Our goal is to standardise technologies and workflows across all our Avid news operations, which now total over 60 sites. The new systems enable the recovery of large amounts of blocked-out – but usable – space and offers detailed enterprise-wide analytics on our Avid storage.”

Calrec NAB 2020 Preview: Central Hall Stand C8008 Posted: 13/02/2020
Calrec NAB 2020 Preview: Central Hall Stand C8008

Calrec’s Type R for TV is a new virtual mixing console with its design allowing customers to take advantage of these new workflows. It’s flexible and integrated native IP core gives customers a way to benefit from virtual working practices by integrating with station automation systems. Type R for TV is driven by station automation and is compatible with popular station automation systems including Ross Overdrive, Sony ELC and Grass Valley Ignite. Type R is the best of both worlds – it provides fully automated programming with real-time adjustment of unpredictable external factors via a standard web browser. Type R’s small, adaptable and highly portable hardware elements can be easily added if desired.Powered by standard POE switches, Type R has three different panel options. If broadcasters prefer a physical surface then banks of 6 x faders can be added, or adaptable soft panels like Calrec’s Large Soft Panel (LSP) and Small Soft Panel (SSP) can be used.

VP2 virtualized mixing system

Calrec’s VP2 virtualized mixing system has no physical control surface and utilisesCalrec’s Assist software for setup and control. VP2’s 4U core comes in three DSP sizes; 128, 180 and 240 input channels, and incorporates Calrec’s powerful Hydra2 networking solution. As with all Hydra2 products this can be controlled by a station automation system.

VP2 enables a station to reap many of the benefits of using a Calrec console, but without a physical control surface. Calrec’s Assist UI can be accessed from multiple locations via a web-browser. Control can be limited to basic functions or full control can be awarded to delve deeper to fine tune the setup or recall different shows as needed.

VUALTO, an expert in cloud-based OTT video delivery and orchestration, has partnered with ATEME, a leader in video delivery solutions for broadcast, cable, DTH, IPTV and OTT, for automated encoder integration within the VUALTO CONTROL HUB (VCH) video orchestration tool, which allows for multiple origins and encoders to be integrated seamlessly. The VCH is vendor agnostic and interoperable with a host of technology partners.

The VCH now has full integration for ATEME’s TITAN Live and TITAN Mux encoding solutions, providing integration with the TITAN Live API to automate live event streaming workflows, the ability to set specific inputs and outputs dynamically using the VCH channel configuration, provides support for redundant setups and has capabilities for on-premise and in cloud.

The automated integration with VCH makes streaming easier, removing the requirement for manual configuration and risk of error, which can be a particularly cumbersome process when using a redundant setup. The addition of ATEME’s TITAN solutions has also facilitated an extension of the VCH plugin set.

Combining the two technologies provides broadcasters with a premium quality streaming service, which is flexible, agile and entirely suited to their business model and end goals.

Shine TV Expands Innovative Use of LiveU Technology Across Series 2 of The Heist and Series 3 of Celebrity Hunted. Posted: 13/02/2020
Shine TV Expands Innovative Use of LiveU Technology Across Series 2 of The Heist and Last Year and rsquo;s Series 3 of Celebrity Hunted

After the success of the first series of The Heist, Sky has commissioned a second series from leading UK production company Shine TV, with this airing from February 6th on Sky One. Once again Shine turned to LiveU to create an innovative production gallery, as well capturing onscreen footage, with the company also deploying LiveU to create a flexible nationwide filming and comms system for its series, Hunted and Celebrity Hunted. LiveU’s UK partner Garland Partners oversaw technology supply and provided support.

The filming of this year’s series of The Heist, which took place in and around Alnwick, Northumberland, UK, differed in two main ways from the first: the use of HEVC via five LU600 units and five LU300s; and a significant increase in the use of LiveU’s smartphone app LU-Smart with a 30 per cent growth in footage captured using this technology.

Filming The Heist has unique challenges as a group of thieves – nine members of the public split into four teams of two and one operating alone – takes part in a bank job to steal £1m. If they do this successfully and manage to keep the cash for 20 days, while being pursued by former real-world detectives, then it’s theirs to keep. The challenge comes in having the producer/directors – or storytellers – be able to see what the main camera teams are shooting while also being able to see what the thieves are up to in order to tell the best story possible. As well as the low-res feeds from the main cameras, the thieves used mobile phones and the LU-Smart app to send footage back to the low-res production gallery with that footage also stored on the phones for use in the show.

Calrec CABSAT 2020 Show Preview Posted: 13/02/2020
Calrec CABSAT 2020 Show Preview

Exhibiting with GSL Professional stand 308

Type R

Calrec is showing its Type R modular, expandable, IP-based system at CABSAT. Type R makes use of standard networking technology and combines it with configurable soft panels that can be tailored to operator needs.

Type R’s physical control system consists of three slimline panels: a fader panel, a large soft panel and a small soft panel. Each is compatible with COTS hardware and powered over Ethernet to keep cabling to a minimum. At the heart of Type R is a simple 2U core with integrated I/O resources to get customers up and running immediately.

Calrec’s Brio console – immense power in a compact package

Calrec’s compact, high power Brio consoles are designed with versatility in mind to work across all different broadcast applications for everything from live sports to news and light entertainment. The Brio36 includes an impressive range of on board I/O so it’s operational straight out of the box. It also has full Hydra2 network compatibility and a sensitive price point that doesn’t reflect the full and rich broadcast feature set. The smaller Brio12 is only 484mm with standard trims and just 430mm with Calrec’s slim trim option.

Last year, Calrec upgraded the channel count for both the Brio36 and Brio12 with DSP expansion packs, bringing their channel counts from 64 to 96 inputs and 48 to 64 inputs, respectively.
