Glensound GDC 6432 Digital Commentary Provides The World Cup Feeds At The Rugby World Cup New Zealand 2011

Seasoned Glensound users Gearhouse Broadcast have just returned from a successful event at the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand, where they provided commentary services to OSB NZ, for host broadcaster Sky NZ. In providing this service they selected the Glensound Digital Commentary GDC 6432 as the commentary system.

Statistics

There were 37 GDC 6432 Glensound Digital Commentary systems in use during the Rugby World Cup, and they were used to provide the World Feed for every broadcaster requiring a fully equipped commentary booth.  They were used at all 48 games, across 12 venues throughout New Zealand.

The commentary was grouped into six kits that were transported, between matches as they were needed. At all venues the international broadcasters were presented with a uniform Glensound set up to provide them with identical conditions at any game they were commentating on.

Glensound Digital Commentary

The GDC 6432 is a two part system with a 1u 19 digital Commentary Control Unit (dCCU), and a separate three Commentators Unit (dCU/3).  There are three linking options between these two units as either coaxial (400m range inc power), Ethernet (100m range inc power) or Ethernet fibre (kms).  All options carry 8 channels of bi-directional audio at 24 bit 48kHz.

The dCCUs were located in a centralised Commentary Control Room and connected to the dCU/3 in the commentary booths via Ethernet on CAT 5.

The classic Glensound GS-GC range of ISDN codecs were used as the link back to broadcasters.

dCCU to dCU/3 Links

The Host Broadcaster also provided an additional GDC 6432 interfaced into the main commentary unit to provide side line comments.

At the main Eden Park venue in Auckland the dCCU to dCU3 link was via fibre optic cable using managed Ethernet switches. Commentary Control Manager at the Rugby World Cup was Brett Penman, This proved to be a great system which gave us a reliable backbone between the OB compound and the commentary area and also between the OB compound and the side line positions. It also provided us with a circuit direct from commentary to the side line with a single patch cable. This proved invaluable for broadcasters who turned up with SNG vehicles who wanted the commentary gear installed into their vehicles..  All other venues used a coaxial link between dCCU and dCU/3.

The Glensound Commentary Rack

The dCCU of the GDC 6432 system contains all the audio I/O.  These were racked in multiples of up to 8 units and the monitoring and talkback was linked across all systems.  This allows a single engineer to monitor and communicate on all systems whilst only being connected to one.  The same rack also contained a managed Ethernet switch with a single mode fibre output.  This allowed all GDC 6432 base stations to connect on a single twin core fibre, down to the commentary area, where another switch then linked out to the 8 commentary units.  This made the installation of the systems very straightforward as the systems moved from stadium to stadium.

Feedback

Brett Penman, Commentary Control Manager at the Rugby World Cup was impressed with the Glensound system, As a first time user of this type of Glensound unit I was impressed with its ease of programming and the flexibility of its configuration to provide exactly what we needed. The audio quality was second to none and reliability something I felt very comforted by. I would be confident in saying we did not experience any equipment related faults over the 48 games we covered which was tremendous. Overall I found the experience with Glensound to be nothing but positive and well suited to the needs of our operation.

Kevin Moorhouse, Gearhouse Broadcasts Chief Operating Officer said With Glensound commentary systems, I always get what I ask for.  The systems are complete, with all necessary accessories, and they just work.  I always get what I want.

This is another example of a dedicated commentary system from Glensound providing the best technical solution in the commentary booth, at the broadcast centre or commentary control area.  Marc, Wilson from Glensound reflects on a successful project, When Glensound provide a commentary solution to a major world event, we aim to make it as effortless as possible for all parties involved simple to setup and simple to operate.  Gearhouse Broadcast are a very valued customer of Glensounds and we will always endeavour to make sure we provide a commentary solution that is effortless in its configuration and operation, so that they can be confident and assured that the Glensound Commentary system is one area they will not have to worry about during an important event.
