GRAVITY MEDIA UK POST-PRODUCTION RENTAL DIVISION MOVES TO BIGGER FACILITY

Gravity Media, the leading global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors, has moved its UK post-production equipment rental business to a larger facility. Its new home is a 15,000 square foot (1,400 square metre) building including purpose built mezzanine floor in Southwood on the outskirts of Farnborough, five miles away from its previous base at Ash Vale in neighbouring Surrey.

The division, which specialises in providing non-linear editing and post production services for the long-form television and feature film markets was formerly known as HyperActive Broadcast. Late last year it was rebranded alongside sister companies Gearhouse Broadcast, Input Media and Chief Entertainment as Gravity Media, enabling the single brand to offer more end-to-end solutions and drive greater value for its clients.

It also operates Gravity House, a high-end post-production facility on Frith Street in London’s Soho. This offers networked suites of cutting rooms capable of full end-to-end 4K production workflows, colour grading, motion graphics, visual effects and 3D. The facility is popular with leading productions such as The Crown, Endeavour and The Aeronauts.

GRAVITY MEDIA LANDS RTS PROGRAMME AWARDS 2020 NOMINATION

Gravity Media, the leading global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors, has been nominated in the Best Sports Programme category at the RTS Programme Awards 2020. Its UK Production & Content team (known at the time as Input Media) has been shortlisted for its coverage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup semi-final between England and USA last July. The live broadcast on BBC One was the highest live TV audience of 2019 at the time as 11.7m viewers watched England lose 2-1 to the eventual tournament winners.

The BBC selected Input Media to produce live programming of the FIFA Women’s World Cup, which was held in France, for broadcast on the BBC’s network TV channels, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website. Input Media had previously provided a similar service for BBC at the 2015 tournament in Canada. A record-breaking 28.1m people - 47% of the UK population - tuned in to watch the Input Media-produced coverage of the 2019 Women's World Cup on BBC television and online.

Grass Valley IP Solutions Give Gravity Media a Smart, Flexible Live Production Infrastructure for Major Sporting Events

Grass Valley’s IP solutions have been selected by Gravity Media to form an open standards-based IP core built – together with Cisco Nexus 9000 IP switches – as part of an upgrade to its live production capability. The deployment includes Grass Valley UCP-25/50 Gateway cards and MV-821-IP multiviewers as part of a wider roadmap to full IP migration by the global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors. The system was deployed at the UEFA Europa League final in Baku, Azerbaijan on 29th May, 2019 and also formed the heart of the live production environment at the UEFA Champions League final in Madrid on 1st June, 2019. It was more recently used for the core of a Grand Slam tennis tournament.

As consumer demands for captivating viewing experiences place pressure on existing baseband environments, Grass Valley’s advanced IP solutions help customers transition to flexible, scalable infrastructures and smart, agile workflows. To evolve its live production capability, Gravity Media began migrating towards a live IP-based production environment at a major sporting event in Australia in January 2019, making use of Grass Valley IP multiviewers to handle its monitoring requirements. The new Grass Valley IP core enables Gravity Media to leverage a powerful, future-proofed production environment that is agnostic to evolving production needs and can adapt rapidly – even during an event.

“By taking an IP-based approach we have been able to vastly simplify the system. Now we can get the whole IP core up and running within a day – that is unheard of for a major sporting event,” explained Ed Tischler, acting managing director for the UK at Gravity Media. “As the frontrunner in the industry transition to IP, Grass Valley has the best pedigree, delivering the most accomplished solutions on the market. Their monitoring system is second to none and unlike solutions from other vendors – which require a lot of time spent in set up – with Grass Valley everything just works out of the box.”

The 750m2 sound stage is equipped for entertainment, game, panel, lifestyle, live-audience television shows, commercial shoots and events. The decision to take on the large site is part of Gravity Media’s plan to extend its local service offering and also meet growing demand for high-end studio space from content creators.

A key attraction with Stage 5 is its location, just five minutes from the centre of Melbourne, which is widely considered the screen and arts capital of Australia. The facility is ideal for all types of productions. It can hold an audience of up to 400 people and has many of the features of a traditional television studio with a sound attenuation of 50dB(a), motorised lighting hoists, silent air-conditioning and a super flat epoxy floor for camera pedestals. It also comes with eight dressing rooms, an audience holding area and production space.

In this new role, Ed will be responsible for the strategic direction and commercial performance of all Gravity Media’s UK-based operations, which include Media Services & Facilities, Production & Content and Equipment Rental & Sales. This appointment follows the recent move to the single brand of Gravity Media late last year and Ed will take the lead in integrating the former Gearhouse Broadcast, HyperActive Broadcast and Input Media businesses in the UK. In addition, Layla Cook has also been promoted, becoming Gravity Media’s new UK Broadcast Equipment Rental Manager. 

Ed will report directly into John Newton, Gravity Media’s CEO. In the UK he will work closely with James Gander who continues to oversee Gravity House, the Soho post-production facility, as well as the integrated workflows service for live broadcast and feature film post-production and Steve Norris, the new Director, Production and Content. 

Layla will now oversee Gravity Media’s extensive inventory of the latest professional equipment which includes 4K-ready lenses, cameras and live production tools.

Gravity Media Gears Up for a Summer of Sport with New Flyaways

Gravity Media, a leading provider of outside broadcast trucks and flyaway production kits, is building further systems in preparation for premier sporting events in 2020, including a major football competition in Europe. Central to the new flyaway kits is the Platinum™ IP3 router from Imagine Communications.

The key to success in building flyaways is to create a system which provides all the resilience and reliability needed for live broadcasting, but in a compact footprint. As the name suggests, these often have to travel by air freight to meet deadlines, where additional space and weight can be prohibitively expensive.

“We picked the Platinum IP3 because we know it is reliable — we know what it does,” said Peter Newton, technical and operations director at Gravity Media. “Because of the established partnership with Imagine, we knew that we would get good support if we need it, and we will get ample utilization of the equipment. It is a good solid product that does what it says it will.”

Gravity Media has used equipment from Imagine Communications for over 15 years, which has established Imagine as a trusted partner. When it came to choosing routers for the new flyaways, Gravity Media compared all the popular models on the market, but was confident in selecting the field-proven Platinum IP3. The new flyaways will use both the 15RU and 28RU routers.

The key project for which these flyaways are designed requires support in 12 locations over a four-week period in June 2020. The kits will provide live production functionality. The Platinum IP3 routers incorporate integral multiviewer technology, reducing space in the racks and simplifying setup. The order also includes a number of modules from Imagine’s Selenio 6800+™ processing range, along with Magellan™ router control panels.

Gravity Media, the leading global provider of complex live broadcast facilities and production services to content owners, creators and distributors, has appointed former Pac-12 Networks Sr. Director, Content Production Laura Podolak Waddell as its new Director, Strategic Partnership Management for North America. Laura joins the team to enhance brand relationships with a focus on an ongoing studio operations project that Gravity Media is overseeing for a major media and technology brand.

After nearly a decade of local news production for radio stations in Colorado and California, Laura became part of Pac-12 Networks’ launch team in 2012. The considerable amount of broadcasting experience she gained during her time there has led her to join Gravity Media where she will bring teams across the country closer together to streamline production processes and improve content output for clients. As Laura emphasises, the role comprises everything that fascinates her about production; “compelling content, a fast-paced environment and all the unique personalities of content creators.”

Laura’s past seven years at Pac-12 Networks were focused on relationship building, enhancing communication across content teams and implementing production best practices. The biggest challenge she’s seen in the broadcasting industry over that time was engaging a young audience, finding out where the younger viewers are consuming content and what sports they’re most interested in watching to entice the next generation of fans. “Nobody can predict exactly where media consumption is going, but what we do know, is that people want to watch engaging content,” she notes.
