SMPTE 2020 Call for Papers Now Open Under New Review Procedure Posted: 16/01/2020
SMPTE 2020 Call for Papers Now Open Under New Review Procedure

SMPTE®, the organization that is defining the future of storytelling, is seeking technical manuscript proposals for the SMPTE 2020 Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition (SMPTE 2020), Nov. 9-12, at the Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites in Los Angeles. With this year's call for papers, the Society has introduced a new two-phase submission and review process designed to enhance the quality above the already high standard for SMPTE 2020 presentations and to increase the opportunity for publication in the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal.

In the first phase of this new selection process, which begins today and extends until March 10, SMPTE will accept abstract submissions. The SMPTE 2020 program committee will review these submissions and create a shortlist of preliminary acceptances by April 20. Authors will be notified of their abstract's status shortly after April 20.

Baselight helps to polish Uncut Gems Posted: 14/01/2020
Baselight helps to polish Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems is the latest movie from directing duo, the Safdie Brothers. The movie tells the story of a charismatic New York City jeweller and gambler (Adam Sandler), and is set in the diamond industry of New York. So it is appropriate that the colour palette was created at The Mill NY by colourist and director of DI, Damien Van Der Cruyssen.

Van Der Cruyssen collaborated closely with cinematographer Darius Khondji, as well as the Safdie Brothers, all of whom he had worked with previously on the Jay-Z video for Mercy Me. “At that point I got a good understanding of their relationships and how I could fit into the equation.”

Visually, Uncut Gems has a classic New York City look, but with a modern twist. “The Diamond District hasn’t changed much over the last forty years, so it automatically had that 70’s ‘noir’ feel,” commented Van Der Cruyssen. “But we wanted to break away from the steely, gritty New York to a more real-life aesthetic – less forced and contrived.”

Around half of the movie was shot on 35mm film to give it a more natural look, which meant Van Der Cruyssen had to treat the digital footage to match. “Marrying the film footage with the digital scenes was quite challenging,” he explained. “So I asked the crew to shoot some grain elements that could be overlaid in Baselight and adjusted per scene.”

Man Made Music Upgrades Its Surround Monitoring With PMC Posted: 21/11/2019
Man Made Music Upgrades Its Surround Monitoring With PMC

Man Made Music, a Manhattan-based company specialising in sound design, sonic branding and music creation, has been working closely with loudspeaker manufacturer PMC to upgrade the stereo and surround monitoring in one of its two control rooms.

The company has installed a PMC IB2S XBD-A active system for both stereo and 5.1 monitoring and is using PMC Wafer2 passive speakers for Left and Right Rear Surround positions. These provide excellent dispersion and frequency response in a small, rectangular footprint, and because they can easily be mounted to any wall they allow for maximum flexibility in all types of custom-install situations.

Established by award-winning composer and producer Joel Beckerman, Man Made Music creates iconic music and sounds for companies such as Nissan, Disney, Citi, Alzheimer’s Association and HBO. Beckerman’s belief that sound matters was a key reason why the company chose PMC when it decided to upgrade its main Studio A control room.

“The PMCs are hands-down the most true and transparent monitors I've mixed with,” says Beckerman. “They're also so incredibly inspiring to track with, which just makes the music better all-around."

Chief Technician Darren Moore adds: “We do IMAX, immersive and other advanced audio formats, so we were looking for an upgrade to add to the speaker allotment in our main studio. PMC are leading the way for the new Dolby Atmos format and were already outfitting major facilities and schools with Dolby Atmos systems.”

The addition of PMC monitors is providing better full-room coverage and additional reference monitors for mixing in-studio. This, in turn, is allowing clients, guests and larger groups ato enjoy the full surround experience.
