THE AVERAGE UK VIEWER IS WATCHING MORE TV AND PAYING and pound;25 MONTH FOR TV SERVICES DURING LOCKDOWN

A large majority of the UK population is watching more TV content since the outbreak of COVID-19, according to a recent study conducted by Netgem TV. The leading TV service has recently completed a survey with over 750 respondents to explore the different ways in which consumers across the UK and Ireland are turning to television to escape from the daily routine in lockdown.

SubtitleNEXT allows for remote online study and work

When it was announced that colleges and universities would have to close due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Hellenic American College in Athens was in an immediate position to be able to transfer onsite courses to synchronous online sessions.

With the help of the SubtitleNEXT platform, chosen for the Masters in Translation (MAT) Program and Audio-visual Translation Lab, students are currently able to continue working on SubtitleNEXT remotely to complete their courses without disruption.

SubtitleNEXT is a flexible subtitling timed-text system that can run on different types of hardware. With the cooperation of the SubtitleNEXT team, the educational set-up was quickly adapted for remote working and virtual study. The powerful features in SubtitleNEXT and the collective team spirit have allowed students to continue their learning, and it will enable them to progress to the next stage of their educational journey.

Hellenic American College in Athens is a dynamic institution with lecturers who had already embraced and adopted SubtitleNEXT last year for its MAT program, arming a future generation with knowledge of how to effectively localize content for every major studio, OTT platform, and broadcast company to meet global consumer demand. The MAT is one of 14 academic degree programs of the US-accredited Hellenic American University which the College offers in Greece. Students in the MAT program acquire the credentials to begin a career in translation, audio-visual translation and editing.

Baselight helps to polish Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems is the latest movie from directing duo, the Safdie Brothers. The movie tells the story of a charismatic New York City jeweller and gambler (Adam Sandler), and is set in the diamond industry of New York. So it is appropriate that the colour palette was created at The Mill NY by colourist and director of DI, Damien Van Der Cruyssen.

Van Der Cruyssen collaborated closely with cinematographer Darius Khondji, as well as the Safdie Brothers, all of whom he had worked with previously on the Jay-Z video for Mercy Me. “At that point I got a good understanding of their relationships and how I could fit into the equation.”

Visually, Uncut Gems has a classic New York City look, but with a modern twist. “The Diamond District hasn’t changed much over the last forty years, so it automatically had that 70’s ‘noir’ feel,” commented Van Der Cruyssen. “But we wanted to break away from the steely, gritty New York to a more real-life aesthetic – less forced and contrived.”

Around half of the movie was shot on 35mm film to give it a more natural look, which meant Van Der Cruyssen had to treat the digital footage to match. “Marrying the film footage with the digital scenes was quite challenging,” he explained. “So I asked the crew to shoot some grain elements that could be overlaid in Baselight and adjusted per scene.”

The End of the F***ing World Season Two Graded In DaVinci Resolve

Blackmagic Design today announced that CHEAT has continued its expansion with DaVinci Resolve Studio, adding a new HDR ready grading suite as well as a research and development lab.

This adds to CHEAT’s three preexisting grading suites, which include Linux machines with dual Intel Xeon E5-2600 v4 processors supported by four Nvidia GTX 1080Ti GPUs and the DaVinci Resolve Advanced Panel.

The first project to be realized through the new workflow is The End of the F***ing World season 2. Returning following the critically acclaimed first season, which has been nominated for BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards, the grade on series two was led by CHEAT’s owner and colorist Toby Tomkins.

“Season two was a challenge because it introduced a new director, new DPs and a new production designer. It was also our first Dolby Vision grade as a facility,” says Toby. “There was a lot of pressure to ensure we delivered to the same high standards expected of us from our work on season one.”

That’s the premise of Osmosis, the French-language original series from Netflix; however, things don’t always go as planned. Cinematographer Jean-François Hensgens was chosen by Netflix to shoot the first six episodes of the eight-episode series with multiple directors, including Julius Berg, Pierre Aknine and Mona Achache, while maintaining visual and artistic continuity from episode to episode.
