Perfectly in sync: Atomos and Timecode Systems reveal first generation of a new, integrated product range at Inter BEE 2019

Take a global leader in recorder-monitors and add to it the clout of a powerful wireless sync platform and you get boundless opportunities for multicamera content creation of every budget and genre. The announcement of the acquisition of Timecode Systems by Atomos a few weeks ago came with a bold promise of a new, more democratic era for multicamera video production. And at this week’s Inter BEE exhibition in Japan, the newly joined companies are showing they’re already making significant headway on delivering this vision.

For InterBEE 2019, Atomos is putting the AtomX SYNC accessory for the Ninja V centre stage. It’s the first product from the recorder-monitor leaders to include fully integrated Timecode Systems sync power. This adds advanced wireless sync and remote device control features to the Ninja V’s feature set. Attaching the module locks the connected camera into a robust, frame-accurate sync with other Ninja Vs, and also any other sound and video devices, and even compatible smartphone camera apps using Timecode Systems products.

Riedel Provides Comprehensive Signal Transport and A V Infrastructure for 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games

Riedel Communications supplied a turnkey A/V solution for the 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, recently completed in Lima, Peru. Riedel's world-class technologies, coupled with comprehensive on-site service and support, ensured flexible, clear, and reliable signal transport and communications for both games.

As the world's third-largest international multisport events, the 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games saw a combined total of 9,500 athletes from 41 nations participating in 419 events across 39 sports. Riedel was the official audio/video partner for this year's games, supplying all signal distribution systems and intercom communications for a record 42 competition venues and three noncompetition venues. This included the real-time transport of baseband HD production signals for events such as weightlifting, rhythmic gymnastics, archery, handball, marathon, 20-kilometer and 50-kilometer walk races, racquetball, and water polo.

"We shipped 22 40-foot sea freight containers full of our equipment to Peru — plus multiple airfreight shipments — which shows the immense scope of this project," said Marc Schneider, Director of Global Events for Riedel Communications. "Putting on an international sporting event of this scale is a massive undertaking, but our team lives for this type of complex challenge. Just as we have proven time and time again, Riedel's integrated solutions offer the power, flexibility, reliability, and simplicity needed to drive this world-class sporting event."

Riedel supplied all audio systems for the 2019 Pan American and Parapan American Games, including PA systems, microphone systems, and specialized solutions, such as underwater speakers. The comms solutions included 45 Artist digital matrix intercom systems with 50 panels, 110 commentator boxes, and 220 Bolero beltpacks and headsets.

Directors Cut upgrades to Baselight for HDR and 4K Posted: 31/10/2019
Directors Cut upgrades to Baselight for HDR and 4K

Independent London post house Directors Cut Films – owned and operated by its creative staff – has invested in a Baselight TWO colour grading workstation with a Blackboard 2 control panel. Directors Cut works primarily in premium long-form television, as well as drama series, documentaries and feature films, with increasing interest in 4K and HDR.

“Being owned and run by ex-editors, we know what is required to meet and exceed expectations in post,” said Senior Colourist Andy Elliott. “We felt it was the right time to invest and embrace HDR and 4K workflows. HDR in particular produces much more of a positive visual impact, with real benefits in the immersive experience for the viewer.”

Leading broadcasters and production companies in the UK routinely turn to Directors Cut to finish major projects. While the work includes major dramas and some feature films, the company has a reputation for long form TV, especially documentaries. Recent projects graded by Elliott include biographies of Cher and Elton John, an investigation of the Bauhaus for BBC4, and Sir David Attenborough’s call to action Climate Change: The Facts.

Elliott pointed out that such programmes frequently bring together footage shot on multiple different cameras and formats, often in less than ideal circumstances. The task for the colourist is to integrate all of the footage as well as create a coherent look that reflects the story the director wishes to tell. That makes the speed and power of the upgraded Baselight suite an important asset.

Power of Baselight X on display at the heart of Inter BEE Posted: 31/10/2019
Power of Baselight X on display at the heart of Inter BEE

At Inter BEE, the FilmLight presence will be led by Koichi Matsui, General Manager of FilmLight KK, along with Yoko Kimura, newly appointed sales and product specialist. “FilmLight is one of the world’s leading companies for production and post production technology,” said Koichi Matsui “Yoko’s recent appointment underlines this region’s importance to us, and is a clear indication of the support we are giving to our existing and future customers in Japan.”

Top end post-production is placing ever-more stringent technical demands on technology, in support of the creative ambitions of directors, cinematographers and colourists. 4K and HDR are now commonplace, and 8K is being broadcast today in Japan. Recently, Baselight workstations were chosen for grading and finishing Ang Lee’s new movie, Gemini Man, shot and delivered in 120 frames per second, 4K, high dynamic range 3D.

Only the power of the Baselight X system can handle such a data-intensive project, while still giving the colourist free rein with next-generation creative tools and realtime response. FilmLight will demonstrate these tools as part of its latest software version at Inter BEE 2019, on an 8K display powered by a Baselight X grading system. This includes new productivity features such as the enhanced timeline with collapsing stacks and multiple tracks.
