David Yarrow joins leading Super Stage line-upat The Photography Show and The Video Show 2020 Posted: 05/03/2020
David Yarrow joins leading Super Stage line-upat The Photography Show and The Video Show 2020

The Photography Show and The Video Show - the UK’s largest photography and moving image co-located event – has officially announced the seventh industry legend set to take to the Super Stage at Birmingham’s NEC, from 14-17 March 2020. Fine art photographer David Yarrow will join the likes of Chase Jarvis, Susan Meiselas and Ross Halfin.

David Yarrow’s evocative and immersive photography of life on earth is striking and distinctive, and has earned him an ever-growing following among art collectors. His large monochrome images, made in Los Angeles, are on display in leading galleries and museums across Europe and North America. In 2018, David’s famous image “The Wolf of Main Street” sold for $100,000 and was the highest bid for piece by a living photographer; more recently “78 Degrees North” went for an even more impressive $110,000. Yarrow’s position in the industry has been rewarded with a wide range of advisory and ambassadorial roles, including with conservation organisations like WildArk, plus brands including Land Rover and Nikon.

In his talk, David will take listeners on a photographic journey from the bone shaking cold of Antarctica to the sweltering jungles of Borneo, in search of content that transcends and forces us to reflect on our tenancy of planet earth. His large monochrome black and white images each come with a story of perseverance and creative courage. From these narratives will emerge a theme - one of following your passion no matter what. David has always wanted to take photographs that grab and hold the attention of others. He believes there is an insecurity in many artists that obsesses with the boundaries of what is worthy of public exposure. Paranoia of the mundane is perhaps David’s most defining characteristic.

Making up just one part of the extensive programme of talks and demos, the highly-acclaimed Super Stage sessions serve as a platform for some of the world’s best-known photographers and filmmakers to share stories about their work, what inspires them and the journey that took them to the top. The entire line-up has been carefully curated across a broad range of genres so enthusiasts and professionals can gain first-hand insight that they wouldn’t be able to get elsewhere.

Over four days, more than 32,000 professionals and enthusiasts will come together at Birmingham’s NEC, looking to be inspired by expert talks and live demos, keep up to date with the latest industry trends and source the very best kit at fantastic prices from some of the industry’s biggest players.

Bolero Sets the Bar for Wireless Intercom Usability and Comfort for California-Based DP Craig Kief Posted: 26/02/2020
Bolero Sets the Bar for Wireless Intercom Usability and Comfort for California-Based DP Craig Kief

Craig Kief, a Los Angeles-based director of photography, is using Riedel's Bolero Standalone wireless intercom for crew communications on his TV shows and commercials. The system allows him to keep all of his camera operators, focus pullers, and department heads in close communication so everyone can focus on the same goals in the middle of a busy and noisy set. With its long list of advanced features and capabilities, Bolero now enables clear communications for every production, whether it's shot on studio sets or at remote locations.

Craig's previous comms solution comprised walkie-talkies and a legacy wireless system that operated in the crowded 2.4 GHz range, delivering less-than-ideal audio quality and suffering from interference, short range, and poor battery life. Bolero has changed all of that, first by eliminating walkie-talkies completely, and next by allowing a more natural way of speaking: giving multiple users full duplex communications instead of forcing them to wait for a walkie channel to be clear before speaking. In addition, audio quality is superb — resulting in far less ear fatigue – and the system's multiple party lines give each crew member the ability to choose and change who they need to monitor throughout the day.

"Bolero has been a fantastic addition to my team. Interestingly, now that we've gotten out of the 2.4 range, all of my other 2.4 gear is working better," said Craig. "Wireless lighting control, focus control, and other gear is functioning much better now, and the main difference is that we're no longer using the 2.4 GHz system."

Camera Hire Heavily Investing in CiNX from Miller Tripods Posted: 14/01/2020
Camera Hire Heavily Investing in CiNX from Miller Tripods

Camera Hire, a well-established Australian rental company and a leader in industry camera support solutions, recently purchased 10 CiNX 3 Fluid Heads and 10 Sprinter II 2 Stage Carbon Fibre Tripods from Miller Tripods. For over a decade, Camera Hire has provided professional cameras and supporting equipment for a large range of productions including commercials, documentaries and feature films.

As a long-time customer of Miller Tripods, Bevan Dally, managing director of Camera Hire, knows he can always turn to Miller to provide top-of-the-line solutions for his customer base. “We’ve been using Miller’s ArrowX series for some time now and the fluid heads are excellent,” he says. “The payload range and versatility are very beneficial considering the various types of jobs we support. With the CiNX line, our customers are able to mount a variety of cameras, including Sony’s FS7, Canon’s C300’s, and ARRI’S Alexa Mini and Amira, with ease.”

Thanks to Miller’s CiNX 3 Fluid Heads, Camera Hire can provide its customers with a solution that significantly improves cinematographer’s workflows. “Upgrading to the brand new CiNX series was a no brainer for us, especially because of its ability to mount ARRI dovetail plates directly on the head,” Dally says. “We can now easily provide our clients with a Sony VCT or ARRI dovetail system using the same fluid head, without the need to swap back and forth between multiple plates. With CiNX fluid heads, cinematographer’s can easily and quickly change from one camera to another with a seamless transition.”
