BT Takes Action to Combat TV Broadcasting Piracy

BT is stepping up its efforts to combat the illegal piracy of premium subscription-based content through a new partnership with leading video infrastructure company, ATEME. BT is using the company’s sophisticated encryption techniques to protect satellite uplinked content in the most secure way possible, and will be offering this technology to its media and broadcast customers around the world to help reduce the number of illegal streams.

BT is the first in the UK to provide the industry with ATEME’s encoder which uses BISS-CA (Basic Interoperable Scrambling System Conditional Access) encryption. The company first used ATEME’s encoder during BT Sport’s transmission of the FA Community Shield at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 4th August and it has continued to be used to protect each of BT Sport’s Premier League live broadcasts this season.

Julien Mandel, Contribution Segment Manager ATEME said: "With BISS-CA inscription integrated in to our solutions and provided as a simple software upgrade, BT can now be even more confident that the content it is transporting for their global media and broadcast customers is well-protected. We are pleased to know that BT is using the strongest tool to provide to its clients a secure delivery’’.

Viaccess-Orca to Host Webinar on Cutting-Edge Anti-Piracy Strategies

Viaccess-Orca (VO), a global leader providing OTT and TV platforms, content protection, and advanced data solutions, announced today a new webinar titled, "Defining and Executing a Piracy Management Strategy Through Cutting-Edge Technologies and Services."

Ignoring piracy is not an option: the need for an efficient and personalized anti-piracy strategy is critical.

Nov. 26, 3:00 p.m. GMT --  register at http://bit.ly/37lP8Vh.

• Content piracy has evolved over the last few years with the democratization of IP-based video delivery.

• Pirates have found ways to bypass traditional content protection technologies, redistribute, and monetize pirated content.

• Broadcasters and service providers face immense pressure to increase subscribers, ensure revenues, avoid churn, protect their brand reputation, and comply with rights-holders' content-protection requirements.

• Licensing pictures or events on an exclusive basis has proven to be increasingly challenging for rights holders due to rampant piracy.

By relying on experts and specialized tools — such as dynamic watermarking, DRM, breach detection, and password-sharing identification — service providers can anticipate piracy risks, instantly identify the source of piracy, and take counteractions. The webinar will discuss why media companies should build a piracy-management strategy and how it can be supported by VO, a leader in content protection technologies.

Its smarter. Its safer. Its VO.
As streaming of premium video content over broadband IP networks has moved from niche to mainstream, there has been an explosion in the ways that pirates steal and redistribute valuable content for profitability purposes. Pirates used to be experts in DVB technology but now they are also experts of IP. Facing constantly renewing threats, operators have two options: they can either become skilled in the security business and build a new division dedicated to combatting piracy, or they can stay focused on their core video business and rely on an agile security company to fight piracy on their behalf.

YouGov and Edgeware research finds forensic watermarking could half the losses from online video piracy

Edgeware, the pioneer of TV CDN technology, working alongside YouGov, an international data and analytics group with access to an online panel of five million people worldwide, has found that the billons lost to online piracy could be halved by putting in place anti-piracy measures. Edgeware’s research found that 50% of viewers who said they would watch pirated content, would be dissuaded from doing so if they knew a program they were watching could be tracked back to its source using forensic watermarking.
