Pixel Artworks Makes A Splash With The International Swimming League

Pixel Artworks, the award-winning specialists in light and pixel technology, today announced the company was behind the creation of the dynamic set and show experience for the recent first world tour of The International Swimming League (ISL), a new start up swimming competition that is changing the world of competitive swimming.

Swimming is a hugely popular sport during global events including the Olympics and World Championships, and The International Swimming League aims to re-envisioning the sport, bringing it to a new social audience to increase engagement and promote public health. The ‘matches’ feature fast-paced, electrifying short-course swimming sessions with the world’s most elite swimmers competing, including Olympic and World Champions from over 10 different countries.

The ISL approached Pixel Artworks in October 2018 to create a unique audio visual sporting experience to fit with the leagues vision of reinventing swimming and spectating for a new generation.

Pixel Artworks created the huge modular set with a 67sqm of 2.6mm pixel pitch LED that radically changes the shape and angles of each of the venues. To create a fanfare and an engaging atmosphere throughout each event, Pixel Artworks produced a graphical video that acts as the narrative for each ISL ‘match’. The accompanying sound design was digitally composed to build a soundscape that heightens the senses and intensified the audience and viewer experience, designed to emphasise the narrative of the celestial origins of swimming.

Natalie Harvey, Senior Producer at Pixel Artworks explains the complexities and creative thought process behind the showstopping production and set: “ISL had a strong vision for the production, and already had a recognisable logo and character figure that we brought to life through the creative content. The 90-second opening animation is abstract and draws inspiration from illustrative animation like manga.”

Working on a show that is being broadcast globally for the first time hasn’t come without its challenges, explains Harvey: “Broadcast times and run programmes are not produced until much nearer showtime. Not only this, but due to the nature of sport, there can be changes in teams up to the event starting. We had to create content which could be swapped quickly as each team also has its own animations.”

The unmissable set piece has now become a vital part of The ISL experience and travelled to every stop of the tour. Teams walk out to the cheering crowds through the set, take photos in front it, and a DJ booth has also been built in. “Our knowledge in spacial design was really pushed, as every venue was very different,” explains Daniel Postlethwaite, Production Director at Pixel Artworks. “We had to consider audience flow, athlete entry and welcome, and pool position, whilst still providing an engaging audio visual experience. We also had to consider the audience, both in the stands and viewing at home, so we chose a very high-resolution LED product that looks fantastic both in person and on camera.”

“Our production team really have been at the core of making this a reality,” continued Postlethwaite. “We had to design and build a modular design to fit all venues, where every rigging and lighting point is different and complex in its own right. The set had to be transportable and relatively flexible to fit various spaces. We had to consider audiences, swimmers jump blocks, and accommodate for unpredictable sized gaps between the LED set and the swimming pool. The new concept meant we had to do onsite testing, and as with any live broadcast, there can be changes. Using disguise servers, combined with real-time workflow Notch, we’ve created a bespoke adaptable system that fits the brief.”

This weekend, in the sixth match of the series, The ISL arrives at the London Aquatic Centre for a sold-out two-day spectacular with four European teams doing battle in the derby match. The biggest names in international swimming will be competing, including Great Britain's Adam Peaty, Hungary's Hosszú Katinka and Australia's Cate Campbell.

The inaugural season of ISL started in Indianapolis in October and progressed through seven venues across the United States and Europe. The European crowds have responded incredibly well to the new swimming league coming to town, with the Naples crowd reaching near-capacity at 1,600 in attendance, and the Budapest crowd seeing 2,000+ attendees each day. The league culminates in a grand finale at the Mandalay Bay Hotel in Las Vegas on 20 and 21 December.

As The ISL reaches an exciting climax, the final in Las Vegas is billed to be an even bigger achievement for the Pixel Artworks team.“To celebrate the success of this extraordinary new competition, we have proposed an even more extravagant set, featuring extended LED and a more visual experience, all designed to engage and excite spectators around the world,” added Kelly Eagle, Business Director at Pixel Artworks.

A Headphone Wearing Theatre Audience Experiences Truly Immersive Live Audio Thanks To DPA and rsquo;s New 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone

Nanna-Karina Schleimann has become one of the first sound designers to make use of DPA’s new Binaural Headset Microphone, which gives sound technicians, vloggers, film makes and YouTubers an accurate and reliable tool to capture authentic immersive audio in real time.

Delivering the superior sound quality for which DPA products are internationally renowned, this new headset allows film, theatre and online content creators to capture exactly what each ear is hearing so that those consuming the content on headphones can experience full immersive sound. Earlier this year, while the 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone was still in development, Schleimann was given the opportunity to beta test it during her graduation performance from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen.

Three Binaural Headset Microphones were used to amplify the voices, actions and movements of the actors performing on stage in Good For Nothing, her graduation performance production. Each member of the audience was given a pair of headphones so they could hear the sound from each actor via a wireless system.

“The binaural microphones allowed the audience to hear exactly what the actors were hearing, as if they were standing on the stage and being whispered to,” Schleimann says.

disguise solutions Powered Video-Intensive Set for Network on Broadway Posted: 06/12/2019
disguise solutions Powered Video-Intensive Set for and lsquo;Network and rsquo; on Broadway

When Tal Yarden created the projection design for ‘Network’ on Broadway he selected disguise gx 2 media servers to drive the video-intensive environment that sets the scene for the iconic story of network anchor Howard Beale. Bryan Cranston won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Beale, an ageing anchor struggling with low ratings, who unravels live on the air only to become a new populist prophet.

Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film, ‘Network’ was directed by Ivo van Hove and opened at the Belasco Theatre in December 2018. Brian Cranston reprised the role he premiered at the National Theatre in London in 2017. The show’s limited run was extended in 2019 with the final performance in June 2019.

Video was used as a way to heighten the story of Beale and his rise to fame. New York-based disguise rental partner Sound Associates supplied the video and audio equipment for the production. The set design for the TV studio featured over 50 screens across various types of monitors plus a large LED video wall and 6 projectors powered by disguise gx 2 media servers. The capture capabilities of the servers were also used to pipe in live video footage from moving cameras on the set further enhancing the storytelling and video design.

Although the film was written in 1976, the play’s creative team made the story relevant to the time while leaving in the original period references. “We wanted to extrapolate a kind of anachronistic storytelling,” says Tal. “So, technologically, it’s not all period television sets or cameras, and some of the content - although most of it is from the 70’s - spans time.” Interestingly, in doing research for the show he found a correlation between news stories and commercial advertising past and present.

Digital Nirvanas New MonitorIQ 6.1 Enhances Ad Insertion, Monitoring, and Troubleshooting

Digital Nirvana, a provider of leading-edge media-monitoring and metadata generation services, today announced new enhancements within MonitorIQ 6.1, the company's next-generation broadcast monitoring and compliance logging platform. A new Digital Program Monitoring application in MonitorIQ 6.1 gives users unprecedented visibility into SCTE 35/104 messages for more effective resolution of digital program insertion (DPI) issues and better control over advertising insertions in a variety of streaming environments.

"MonitorIQ 6.1 incorporates powerful new features and capabilities that take compliance monitoring and advertising optimization to a new level," said Russell Wise, senior vice president of sales and marketing for Digital Nirvana. "The platform's new Digital Program Monitoring application simplifies the monitoring of content and SCTE 104/35-based metadata to ensure DPI messages were inserted correctly. We monitor the presence of markers that allow the ad to be inserted, which provides our users better control in existing and new streaming environments. Thanks to these and other enhancements in MonitorIQ 6.1, broadcasters are better prepared than ever to identify, resolve, and document critical issues and, in turn, meet their regulatory, compliance, licensing, and advertising requirements."

Fincons Group joins Deutsche TV-Plattform Posted: 05/12/2019
Fincons Group joins Deutsche TV-Plattform

Fincons Group, a leading IT management consultancy for the Media & Broadcast sector, through its German subsidiary Fincons.DE GmbH, joins Deutsche TV-Plattform, the German non-profit association whose purpose, since its foundation in 1990, is to introduce, disseminate and further develop digital Television in Germany.

Fincons Group has played a pivotal role in the development of HbbTV technology in Europe – the standard aimed at harmonising the broadcast and broadband delivery of entertainment services to consumers through connected TVs, set-top boxes and multiscreen devices - and has contributed to define best-practice in the new US ATSC 3.0 standard. The company is thus well placed to make a significant contribution to Deutsche TV-Plattform, while continuing to scout for new broadcast technologies and to acquire new skills in the field by working with major players in Italy and Europe.

Andre Prahl, CEO of the Deutsche TV-Plattform: "We are very pleased to see Fincons Group joining Deutsche TV-Plattform. This underlines the relevance of the Smart Media topics and projects we are pushing forward - in particular the minimum requirements for HbbTV-2 devices, which pave the way for new HbbTV services from broadcasters, and our initiative to harmonise metadata requirements for the distribution of audiovisual content".
