First sample ProRes RAW footage from Sony PXW-FX9 and Atomos Shogun 7

This week saw Atomos announce the ability to record 4Kp60 Apple ProRes RAW over HDMI from the Sony Alpha 7S III to the Ninja V HDR monitor-recorder. Today, we are also showing the first sample footage and a tutorial video for the upcoming RAW firmware release for the Sony PXW-FX9 and Shogun 7 which we announced with Sony a few weeks ago. Shot by well known Sony Independent Certified Expert Alister Chapman; he recorded ProRes RAW on the Shogun 7 over SDI from the PXW-FX9 with XDCA-FX9 expansion pack. The results show excellent detail, dynamic range and color.

Shooting RAW on a budget Posted: 06/07/2020
Shooting RAW on a budget

Let’s begin with production, where the image is captured. A good plan of attack is starting with best scenario for image capture. The capture might be camera RAW or a compressed format such as ProRes. In either case the image will be captured to a hard drive or mag, which will be downloaded to another hard drive. A qualified person will generate proxies for editorial and make an archive, often to LTO tape but sometimes to another hard drive.

Sonnet Technologies at SMPTE17
Intraware will showcase new Thunderbolt(TM) 3 editions of Sonnet's Echo(TM) Express SEL and Echo Express SE I Thunderbolt-to-PCI Express(R) (PCIe(R)) expansion systems, which are both now shipping. The compact and lightweight SEL and SE I chassis harness Thunderbolt 3 to enable data transfers up to 2,750 MB/s for both Mac(R) and Windows(R) computers, supporting a wide variety of high-performance PCIe cards. Differing only in size, the single-slot SEL and SE I systems are ideal for use in situations in which users only need to connect a single PCIe card. With the new interface, both systems enable users of computers equipped with 40Gbps Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) ports, such as the new MacBook Pro(R) and iMac(R), to take advantage of Thunderbolt 3's 2,750 MB/s of PCI Express bandwidth to support the most demanding, highest-performance adapter cards.
