SPX Communication Technology 2011 NAB Show

Date: 15/02/2011
Founded in 1942, SPX Communication Technology (formerly Dielectric Communications) is a world leader in the engineering, design, and manufacture of systems for television, FM, and mobile broadcasting. The company's product offerings include antennas, transmission lines, and complete RF filter systems.

SPX Communication Technology is at the forefront of the development of innovative products for the ever-changing needs of the frequency spectrum owner, and offers a variety of options for FM IBOC systems and low power mobile and TV broadcast systems.

SPX Communication Technology at the 2011 NAB Show:
At the 2011 NAB Show, SPX Communication Technology will be highlighting several new low-power solutions designed to reduce costs for broadcasters while increasing reliability. On display in booth C2222 will be the company's DCR-XL, DLP-V, and TLP-BB antennas, in addition to 50-W and 4-kW filters. SPX Communication Technology will also be showcasing a wide line-up of its established antennas and filters for radio and television. Off the show floor, Director of Engineering Keith Pelletier and Senior Vice President of Broadcast Engineering Kerry W. Cozad, will present papers at the 2011 NAB Show Broadcast Engineering Conference. Mr. Pelletier will present "New Developments in Master FM Antenna Systems," while Mr. Cozad will present "Monitoring and Control Systems for Broadcast Transmitting Sites."

New Products at the 2011 NAB Show:

DCR-XL Antenna
With a 1-kW power rating, the low-power DCR-XL FM antenna is competitively priced for both domestic and international low power markets and is an ideal solution for small market stations, auxiliary antennas, and college stations.

DLP-V Antenna
For mobile broadcast applications, in addition to filling gaps in existing networks, the economical DLP-V antenna features an average power rating of 1.6 kW with a 70/30 horizontal/vertical power split. Designed to provide broadcasters with a low weight- and wind-load system, the DLP-V features an eight-bay single module design. The antenna provides a low-profile slot cover for protection from environmental wear and tear, while its simple mechanical design ensures a straightforward installation.

TLP-BB Antenna
The TLP-BB is a side-mounted, lower power UHF antenna capable of covering significant bandwidth at a minimal cost. Ideal for NTSC and DTV broadcasters, the antenna offers a wide 60-MHz bandwidth for 10 channels and a 2.0-degree standard beam tilt. The low weight and windload antenna offers multiple stations an option to combine into the single antenna. In addition the antenna was designed for a quick and simple installation.

50-W Filter
This 6-pole, tunable filter operates over a frequency of 470 MHz to 860 MHz and is engineered to meet the requirements for 6-MHz and 8-MHz bandwidth for digital and analog TV standards. The 50-W filter features an in-line design and is temperature compensated from 0 C to 45 C.

4-kW Filter
This 6-pole, tunable filter operates over a frequency of 470 MHz to 860 MHz and is engineered to meet the filter requirements for 6-MHz and 8-MHz bandwidth for digital and analog TV standards. To minimize package size and reduce insertion loss, the filter utilizes a cross-coupling technique. The 4-kW filter features convection cooling, can be ceiling or floor mounted, and is temperature compensated from 0 C to 45 C.

SPX Paper Presentations at the 2011 NAB Show Broadcast Engineering Conference:

New Developments in Master FM Antenna Systems
Presented by Keith Pelletier, director of engineering
April 10, 2 p.m. 2:30 p.m., Room S228

As more and more FM stations consider consolidation on a common site to lower expenses or look to upgrade present systems for improved performance, the design of Master FM Antenna Systems is evolving. New systems recently installed in the United States and Brazil have unique features for those broadcasters including the power levels, coverage, introduction of digital transmission, auxiliary capabilities, and installation requirements. "New Developments in Master FM Antenna Systems" will explore how these requirements are addressed with the broadcasters and the subsequent development of the hardware and antenna system to produce the desired results.

Monitoring and Control Systems for Broadcast Transmitting Sites
Presented by Kerry W. Cozad, senior vice president of broadcast engineering
April 12, 1 p.m. - 1:30 p.m., Room S228

To reduce the operating costs of critical infrastructure systems, including broadcast transmitting sites, the use of "predictive analytics" is growing. Historically, broadcast sites have used measurements of reflected power to provide protection for the transmitter system. However, this data typically is an indicator that something has already gone wrong and some type of emergency repairs will be required to bring the system back to full operational capability. "Monitoring and Control Systems for Broadcast Transmitting Sites" will describe the use of monitoring and control systems to provide ongoing and real-time data of the transmission system that can be used to predict a future failure and potentially prevent catastrophic failures.
