Sennheiser Digital 9000 system

Date: 15/11/2012

Sennheisers Digital 9000, a digital wireless system that can transmit completely uncompressed audio, artefact-free and with superb dynamics, targets broadcasting professionals, (musical) theatres and high-profile live audio events and sets a new benchmark in digital wireless transmission. The system, which includes the EM 9046 receiver, SKM 9000 handheld and SK 9000 body-pack transmitters, and a comprehensive suite of accessories, has been meticulously designed for the highest channel counts in todays increasingly dense frequency environment.

This system is a masterpiece, both in the digital and the wireless realm, says Kevin Jungk, portfolio manager for wireless microphones at Sennheiser. It offers unprecedented sound quality and ease of use. For example, users will no longer have to calculate and circumvent intermodulation frequencies but can conveniently place their transmission frequencies in an equidistant grid.

Ideal for the most diverse environments

The ground-breaking digital wireless system is fitted with two transmission modes to suit any need and environment. The High Definition (HD) mode will transmit entirely uncompressed, artefact-free audio, as if a high-quality cabled microphone were used. The Long Range (LR) mode has been designed for difficult transmission environments with many sources of interference. It ensures maximum range with a proprietary Sennheiser digital audio codec. This refined codec ensures an audio quality that is superior to that of an FM system, explains Kevin Jungk. These two modes make Digital 9000 the most versatile digital wireless system available, and the best adapted to on-site requirements.

Built-in ease of use

In addition to Infra-Red synchronisation between receivers and transmitters and a convenient antenna loop-through for creating larger receiving systems, Digital 9000 offers a number of unique features. First and foremost, the system does not generate any intermodulation products the high linearity of the entire system, from transmitters to antennas and receivers, and a special transmitter design make laborious intermodulation calculation a thing of the past. Transmission frequencies can simply be set in an equally spaced grid.

The receiver also automatically measures the RF cable loss between the receiver and the booster and adjusts the gain accordingly. This makes the RF wireless system easier to operate for users with less RF knowledge, says Kevin Jungk.

Optimum control more information on the receiver

A large display with clearly laid out controls is at the heart of the EM 9046 receiver. Three display modes ensure that the RF or sound engineer has an optimum overview of important parameters in live situations and can change settings quickly via an intuitive, icon-based menu. Channels can be monitored via the headphone output, either individually or any combined number can be listened to. The modular EM 9046 receiver is a mainframe that accommodates up to eight receivers internally. The receiver system covers the UHF range from 470 to 798 MHz (328 MHz bandwidth). To easily integrate the system into an existing infrastructure, the user can choose between transformer-balanced analogue or digital AES3 audio output modules, or a mix of both.

System set-up is facilitated by a built-in graphical spectrum analyser to scan the RF landscape, and an RF level recorder for checking reception and optimising antenna positions. The receiver will also suggest the best transmission mode for the environment being worked in, and will automatically set an appropriate gain to counteract RF cable losses. The systems antenna boosters can be controlled via the receiver, which is helpful for installations with remote antenna positions.

The multi-channel receiver and the transmitters can optionally use encrypted data transmission, with proprietary keys generated randomly. This will protect a radio link against hijacking and tapping.

The receiver stores up to ten complete system configurations so that set-ups can easily be recalled and repeated.

Powerful sound more information on the handheld

The SKM 9000 handheld transmitter is compatible with all evolution wireless G3 and 2000 Series microphone heads, including the Neumann capsules KK 204 and KK 205. This means that an artists favourite sound can easily be transferred to the new system. Besides these capsules, the handheld can be fitted with four dedicated 9000 Series capsules.

The 9000 Series would not have been complete without the sound of our most successful live capsule, and I am happy that the cardioid dynamic MD 9235 is part of our new digital system, says Kevin Jungk. The rock n roll sound of the MD 9235 is complemented by the transparency of three permanently polarised condenser mic heads, the ME 9002 (omni), ME 9004 (cardioid) and ME 9005 (super-cardioid). The condenser heads feature a low sensitivity to pops and have extremely low handling noise due to snowflake-shaped rubber suspensions above and below the actual capsules.

The rugged SKM 9000 comes with an 88 MHz switching bandwidth, and is available in black and nickel. Command switch versions for easy communication between broadcast units or artists and their crews are also available. As the handheld transmits digitally, it does not employ a compander and is exempt from the associated noise, ensuring a cable-like purity of sound.

Versatile and lightweight more information on the body-pack

The SK 9000 body-pack transmitter is easy to hide and easy to attach; it comes in a magnesium housing that combines maximum robustness with low weight. The transmitter can be used with any clip-on or headset mic with a 3-pin Lemo connector and has a line input for guitars or other instruments. As the system is able to deliver cable-like audio, we have added a three-step guitar cable emulation to round off the perfect instrument sound, explains Kevin Jungk.

The SK 9000 is available in four different frequency ranges (88 MHz switching bandwidth); a command switch for communication between crews and artists/reporters is available as an accessory.

Selective and reliable more information on boosters and antennas

To protect Digital 9000 against unwanted frequencies and interference, the AB 9000 antenna booster has been fitted with eight highly selective filters to allow just a specific frequency window to pass. Unwanted signals are thus blocked out before the first active component, adding to the overall excellent reliability of the system. The filter can be set manually on the booster or remotely via the antenna cable on the receiver.

The AB 9000 provides a maximum gain of 17dB and is available as a stand-alone booster or integrated into the A 9000 omni-directional antenna and the AD 9000 directional antenna. Two booster versions (470 to 638 MHz and 630 to 798 MHz) cover the receivers UHF range.

Power supply more information on batteries and chargers

The transmitters of the 9000 Series operate on environmentally friendly lithium-ion rechargeable battery packs, with a precise remaining operating time indicated on the handheld and the body-pack transmitter as well as on the receiver. The SKM 9000 is powered via the BA 60 rechargeable battery pack, which will power the transmitter for 5.5 hours. The SK 9000 body-pack is powered by the BA 61, which lasts for 6.5 hours. Operation on standard batteries is possible too.

The L 60 charger will recharge two BA 60 or BA 61 in any combination. It reaches 70% of charge in an hour and full charge after three hours, with the charging status being indicated by three-colour LEDs. Up to four chargers can be daisy-chained and powered via a single power supply unit.

Spectrum-efficient wireless

Summing up, Digital 9000 is a meticulously designed wireless tool, says Kevin Jungk. Spectrum is a scarce resource; therefore every part of the system has been designed for the highest frequency efficiency. We have put much effort into allocating the largest possible data rate to the actual sound transmission, ensuring the unmatched audio performance of Digital 9000. Because audio is what its all about.

New Dome SnapBag Softens Kino Flo Light Posted: 27/01/2020
New Dome SnapBag Softens Kino Flo Light

Kino Flo Lighting has transformed its large softlights into larger, softer sources with the new Soft Dome light control system. The customized lighting fabric dome with new “X” pole structure creates an extreme spread of shadowless light when attached to Celeb 850 or Image L80 LED fixtures.

In association with the design team from D.O.P. Choice®, Kino Flo has created the Soft Dome with flexible poles crisscrossed between opposite sides, forming a widened copula shape. When used to light large stages, the Soft Dome delivers broad coverage like traditional spacelight designs; for key and fill lighting the Soft Dome can be stand mounted and focused in a variety directions from vertical and horizontal positions.

FilmLight teams up with ARRI in Paris creative community Posted: 24/01/2020
FilmLight teams up with ARRI in Paris creative community

Following the appointment of Matthieu Straub as the company’s technical and operational consultant to France and the Benelux countries in the summer of 2019, FilmLight is delighted to announce that it has now established a permanent presence in Paris. By sharing premises with ARRI France, FilmLight is developing a strong hub for creative and technical knowledge and events.

The hub will host the first of FilmLight’s Colour Day workshops in 2020, on 28 January. One of the advantages of sharing the centre with ARRI is that it underlines the seamless workflows from camera to finish, using the BLG format for render-free viewing and creativity. The BLG grading metadata is stored in the ARRIRAW and QuickTime headers, ensuring the content and its look are permanently linked.

The Paris Colour Day on 28 January, aimed at creatives and technicians in production and post production, will see FilmLight’s workflow specialists, Straub and Thomas Eberschveiler unveil new FilmLight tools. Attendees will also hear from guest colourist Stéphane Azouze about his collaboration with directors Anastasia Mikova and Yann Arthus-Bertrand on the recent award-winning documentary ‘Woman’. Finally, colour scientist Florine Bel will share her image expertise and discuss her work developing film aesthetics, colour spaces and conversions.

The shared space has already hosted successful events, including a workshop day for DITs. Led by Straub, with guest speakers from Netflix and from post house Mikros, the group discussed the latest developments in colour space management and workflows. ARRI’s presence allowed the discussion to include ARRI Looks and how they can be incorporated into FilmLight BLG post production. In the demonstration area, they featured an ARRI ALEXA camera feeding Prelight and Daylight software, allowing the delegates to experiment with look development and make comparisons between standard and high dynamic range colour spaces.

Explaining the importance of bringing together creative artists and technicians, FilmLight’s Matthieu Straub said “My background is as a digital image technician, and I know how directors and cinematographers are increasingly relying on DITs to find technical solutions to their demanding creative requirements. “Our intention is to use our demonstration and meeting space here on the Rue René Boulanger to be a place where we can encourage the sharing of knowledge and experiences, to help the French cinema industry achieve ever greater things.”

NEP Hilversum Chooses Custom Consoles Control Desks and MediaWall for New MCR Suite Posted: 23/01/2020
NEP Hilversum Chooses Custom Consoles Control Desks and MediaWall for New MCR Suite

Custom Consoles announces the completion and installation of eight control desks and a large MediaWall monitor display support system for NEP Media Solutions BV. Located in the master control room at the company's studios in Hilversum's Media Park, the desks are configured in front and rear rows for use by up to six and four operators respectively.

"The desks are similar in style and colour scheme to a suite we produced in early 2018 for another NEP television studio facility," says Custom Consoles' Sales Manager Gary Fuller. "The forward desk centres on a dual-operator bridge with a total of eight forward-sloping 4U equipment pods. This is constructed as a rectangular unit with space for two operators. Left and right of the bridge are two units of identical design to the bridge but angled to match the curve of the 13.9 metre wide six-frame MediaWall. The MediaWall itself is one of the largest we have produced to date, each of the six frames accommodating four 55 inch UHD displays to create an 11-wide by two-high screen array with two additional pairs of 32 inch screens."

mediaClass Reports Growth in Demand for Subscription-based OTT and IPTV Services

mediaClass reports a sustained acceleration in demand for subscription based services offering video content directly to connected viewers. Bypassing traditional broadcast and satellite platforms, OTT services are typically streamed over the top – meaning over any internet connection rather than a proprietary network.

"Given the rapid changes in product offerings and market trends, the choice of OTT and streaming technology is absolutely key," says mediaClass EVP Manelli Hosseini. "The established OTT middleware products on the market are incremental improvements and add-ons to older IPTV-based systems. This leaves them with a heavy footprint requiring massive servers which are inefficient and inflexible."

"Using our detailed knowledge and long experience of TV services to develop a modern, agile architecture and approach, we invested heavily to develop a full product range from scratch. The key parameters for our customer-centric view were to speed up deployment and enable a low-cost legacy IPTV path for service providers and telcos who want to move to a world-class offer which is disruptively affordable. We have developed our own software modules for functions including a content management system, digital rights management and AI recommendation engines as well as CDN and mobile clients."

Hiltron Reports Strong Sales of HCS-4 Satellite System Controller Posted: 23/01/2020
Hiltron Reports Strong Sales of HCS-4 Satellite System Controller

Hiltron Communications reports strong demand for its HCS-4 satcom system controller which has been integrated into various projects for customers in Europe, the Middle East and Far East.

An innovative recent implementation has been for one of the Middle East's largest telecommunication service-providers. This includes a switching and control system for Swedish Microwave optical low noise block downconverters. The HCS-4 powers and monitors the downconverters, checking for faults such as channel interrupts. If an interrupt is detected, the HCS-4 automatically switches to a backup signal source. Three downconverters are connected via optical fibre in a two-active-plus-one-backup configuration.

"The Middle East system follows on from the recent completion of a large project for a leading European satellite network operator," says Hiltron Managing Director Antonio Monteverde. "This included the integration of a 12U rack of monitoring equipment at 50 separate locations around the world, each with an HCS-4 as the control interface. Every system was pre-assembled and fully tested at our Backnang headquarters prior to on site integration."

dock10 Invests in Leader LV5600 for New UHD and HDR Studios Posted: 23/01/2020
dock10 Invests in Leader LV5600 for New UHD and HDR Studios

Following recent investment in Leader LV7600 UHD HDR rasterizers for its UHD and HDR capable grading and finishing areas, dock10 has purchased a Leader LV5600 SDI/IP waveform monitor as part of ongoing technical development of the production resources supporting MediaCity UK in Salford. The LV5600 was supplied by Leader Europe UK channel partner Jigsaw24. It will be integrated into dock10's newly completed UHD HDR live production system, checking incoming camera feeds from multiple studio cameras to ensure uniform alignment and color matching.

"Ultra high definition and high dynamic range each have an important role to play in the television industry as it progresses to meet rising viewer expectations," comments John O’Shaughnessy, Head of Technology Operations at dock10. "The greater quality made possible by originating content in higher resolution and wider illumination span opens up many new opportunities for content creators. It also increases the long-term value of their productions. Leader's LV5600 incorporates the tools our operators and technicians need to ensure the full impact of UHD and HDR is carried from the point of capture in the studio front end right through to each viewer's display screen."
