Live Coverage During the COVID-19 Crisis - German Broadcaster Deutsche Welle Deploys LiveU technology for Remote Productions from Home Offices

The foreign news channel Deutsche Welle, headquartered in Germany, is relying more than ever on LiveU’s mobile IP broadcasting technology to maintain and expand its global live coverage during the current coronavirus crisis. While the delivery of trustworthy news in real-time remains the first priority, Deutsche Welle’s worldwide reporters and correspondents are working under difficult conditions with many of them being locked down at home and unable to access a studio. This is why Deutsche Welle draws on LiveU equipment even more frequently than usual these days for flexible, location-independent production solutions. As an early adopter of innovative broadcast technology, the station has been building a comprehensive LiveU infrastructure with the help of Netorium, LiveU’s local partner in Germany.

Shine TV Deploys LiveU-Powered Smartphone Rigs for ITV Doc A Very British Lockdown: Diaries from the Frontline Posted: 22/04/2020
Shine TV Deploys LiveU-Powered Smartphone Rigs for ITV Doc A Very British Lockdown: Diaries from the Frontline

Shine TV, part of the Endemol Shine Group, has created an innovative documentary about these difficult times using LiveU’s LU-Smart mobile app to do so, fully adhering to current COVID-19 lockdown rules in the UK. Called A Very British Lockdown: Diaries from the Frontline, which aired on April 21st on ITV, one of the UK’s main terrestrial channels, it follows NHS staff, nursing home workers as well as members of the public to reflect the reality of current lives.

Executive Producer Tom Hutchings at Shine TV, says, “A lot of productions have been put on hold, for obvious reasons. Networks are now faced with finding content to fill their schedules. Production companies are trying their best not to shut up shop, adjusting to new ways of working to make compelling TV in the current climate while adhering to government restrictions. This is what we have done with this documentary, creating TV simply with LiveU technology that provides a real cross section of what’s happening. It means we can stay safe and ensure we capture great content. Everything in the film – with the exception of GVs (general views) – was shot through the app.”

Drawing on their experience in making technically challenging productions such as Celebrity Hunted and The Heist, which utilised LiveU’s technology, Shine TV began to develop a workflow to allow remote filming by members of the public while maintaining editorial quality.

StreamGear to Make NAB Show Debut with Hotly Anticipated VidiMo Live Streaming Production Solution Posted: 09/03/2020
StreamGear to Make NAB Show Debut with Hotly Anticipated VidiMo Live Streaming Production Solution

Streaming solutions startup StreamGear is making their first NAB Show appearance this year to showcase its eagerly-anticipated, smartphone-empowered VidiMo handheld, live production system. The company will exhibit in booth C12439 and the CineCentral pavilion (C9232).

VidiMo – short for Video director on Mobile – turns a smartphone and HDMI video source (such as a camera) into a full-fledged, virtual production and transmission studio, enabling a single operator to produce multi-source, television-style shows that can be streamed live, recorded or both. Offering an easier way for both video professionals and enthusiasts to create and stream engaging, high-quality, live productions, the hardware-and-app combination enables anyone to become a multi-camera producer, social media video star or citizen journalist.

Combining the battery-powered VidiMo Go hardware with the powerful VidiMo Show app, VidiMo lets content creators combine the compact convenience, increasing camera quality and intuitive ease of today’s latest smartphones with the superior creative functionality of a dedicated video or DSLR camera. Users can simply capture the camera’s HDMI signal into their iOS or Android smartphone for live streaming, or use the app’s elegant interface and advanced features to create sophisticated live shows that combine the HDMI input with the phone’s camera and other sources.

Shine TV Expands Innovative Use of LiveU Technology Across Series 2 of The Heist and Series 3 of Celebrity Hunted. Posted: 13/02/2020
Shine TV Expands Innovative Use of LiveU Technology Across Series 2 of The Heist and Last Year and rsquo;s Series 3 of Celebrity Hunted

After the success of the first series of The Heist, Sky has commissioned a second series from leading UK production company Shine TV, with this airing from February 6th on Sky One. Once again Shine turned to LiveU to create an innovative production gallery, as well capturing onscreen footage, with the company also deploying LiveU to create a flexible nationwide filming and comms system for its series, Hunted and Celebrity Hunted. LiveU’s UK partner Garland Partners oversaw technology supply and provided support.

The filming of this year’s series of The Heist, which took place in and around Alnwick, Northumberland, UK, differed in two main ways from the first: the use of HEVC via five LU600 units and five LU300s; and a significant increase in the use of LiveU’s smartphone app LU-Smart with a 30 per cent growth in footage captured using this technology.

Filming The Heist has unique challenges as a group of thieves – nine members of the public split into four teams of two and one operating alone – takes part in a bank job to steal £1m. If they do this successfully and manage to keep the cash for 20 days, while being pursued by former real-world detectives, then it’s theirs to keep. The challenge comes in having the producer/directors – or storytellers – be able to see what the main camera teams are shooting while also being able to see what the thieves are up to in order to tell the best story possible. As well as the low-res feeds from the main cameras, the thieves used mobile phones and the LU-Smart app to send footage back to the low-res production gallery with that footage also stored on the phones for use in the show.

StreamGear Fuses Smartphone and Dedicated Cameras into New Live Video Production Paradigm with VidiMo Posted: 07/11/2019
StreamGear Fuses Smartphone and Dedicated Cameras into New Live Video Production Paradigm with VidiMo

Video content creators ranging from professionals to social media enthusiasts can soon have a better way to share their vision with their audience through high-quality live productions. Streaming solutions startup StreamGear Inc. will come out of stealth mode at tomorrow's StreamGeeks Summit conference in New York City by launching VidiMo, a new hardware-and-app combination that turns a smartphone and external video source into a full-fledged, virtual video production and transmission facility.

Providing an easier way to create and share engaging live video content, the VidiMo system enables a single person with a smartphone and a video camera to produce multi-source, television-style shows that can be streamed live, recorded or both. While smartphone camera quality has improved over the years, it's still no match for the rich creative functionality -- such as optical zoom, tactile focus, iris control and depth of field -- of a dedicated video or DSLR camera. VidiMo lets users have the best of both worlds, bringing an HDMI video source into their smartphone and combining it with the phone's camera and other sources.

VidiMo -- the Video director on Mobile -- enables anyone to become a social media video star or citizen journalist. In its simplest use, VidiMo lets users capture an external HDMI video source into their iOS or Android smartphone and stream it. But VidiMo's extensive, advanced features and fast, intuitive interface also enable producers to create visually-compelling, professional-looking live shows in real time without needing to edit and upload them later.

The VidiMo system consists of the VidiMo Go hardware and VidiMo App software for iOS and Android smartphones. VidiMo Go's innovative physical design forms a complete handheld production solution, acting as a capture device; attaching any size of smartphone to a professional or sports/action camera; and allowing flexible positioning of the phone for easy interaction with the app. VidiMo Go captures live HDMI and analog audio signals into the smartphone, and is powered by an interchangeable, rechargeable battery. The VidiMo Go hardware's unique combination of functionality and ergonomics led to it being selected as a finalist in the 2019 International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) by the Industrial Designers Society of America.
