TSL Products Showcases Updates to its Audio Monitoring Solutions and Broadcast Control Systems at NAB NY 2019

TSL Products, a leading designer and manufacturer of broadcast workflow solutions, will feature its latest audio and control offerings at NAB NY 2019 (Booth N155). The brand continues to evolve its solutions to meet the changing needs of its customers and the transition towards IP workflows. TSL will highlight updates to its audio monitoring offerings, including its SAM-Q platform, PAM-IP and its MPA1 lines. In addition, it will showcase updates to its advanced broadcast control offerings as well as its IP Control Buddy, range of Anywhere Interface Boxes and Flashboard updates.

TSL Products will showcase new modes of operation for its SAM-Q Audio Monitoring platform that go beyond those operator-focused modes with which the platform initially launched. These include audio phase, loudness monitoring and peak latch modes. In addition, the company will also highlight its ability to add MADI monitoring to the SAM-Q-SDI by way of a license. New and existing SAM-Q-SDI customers can add MADI functionality at any time, enabling SDI, AES, analogue and MADI sources to be monitored and mixed simultaneously. SAM-Q represents a new approach to audio monitoring, which allows users to determine how they wish to control and visualise their audio content based on application, environment or simple personal preference. These new developments allow engineers and supervisors to restrict sources, modes and front panel control functions to speed up operation and reduce user error.

TSL will also feature updates to its PAM-IP line and its expansive functionalities beyond audio and video monitoring. The PAM-IP continues to set the standard for 2022-6 and 2110 audio monitors. Its functionality includes loudness measurement, fully configurable metering and multi-channel monitoring. Recognising the importance of edge device control within IP infrastructures, customers can now choose either ‘In-Band’ or ‘Out-of-Band’ to control with their PAM-IP audio monitors. Using a TSL or 3rd party control system, ST-2110 and ST-2022-6 multicast subscriptions to the PAM-IP can now be determined using Ember+, NMOS or TSL’s own RESTful API protocol. Also being shown at NAB NY will be the latest release of TSL’s MPA1 audio monitoring range including improved audio metering for the MPA1-SOLO-MADI and MPA1-SOLO-DANTE, and alternative front panel concepts for the MPA1-MIX-MADI. The range also offers improved control capabilities via SNMP for all MPA1 audio monitors. These reliable and compact monitors enable end-users to monitor audio with confidence and at just 100mm deep, they are particularly suitable for applications where space is premium, such as fly packs and OB trucks.

On the control side, TSL will demonstrate various new functions within master control, playout and transmission as part of its advanced control offerings thanks to TSL’s Flex Network, powered by DNF Controls. These updates include MOS Integration with ENPS and iNews to simplify newsroom production automation by allowing users to take control of the critical devices that they depend on. For playout automation, customers can now cost-effectively and easily create primary or backup/tertiary automation systems, with simple and reliable control over video and graphics playout devices for live programming. Additionally, users can now manage, switch and distribute SCTE commands manually or via automated controls with real time monitoring and notifications when an event occurs.

TSL will also highlight a range of new universal control surfaces and interfaces, including the IP Control Buddy, as well as its line of Anywhere Interface Boxes (AIBs). TSL’s IP Control Buddy is a powerful yet compact system that controls any GPI/O-, Serial- and IP-enabled device. Scaling from one to four buttons, the IP Control Buddy can perform simple ‘on/off’-style actions or trigger complex salvos, and its compact size makes it perfect for flyaway kits and quick-press production tasks. The company’s AIB series is designed specifically for A/V, radio, industrial and TV broadcasting market segments, and allow users to bridge systems and achieve optimal functionality without performing any programming. For device management and interface flexibility, the AIBs offer up to 16 GPI/Os and multiple device control paths, with the AIB-4 also providing Ethernet, 2-way DTMF and dial-up modem. The AIBs transport GPIs and On-Air tallies into the field, wherever you need them – across cities, states and even continents – remotely. Configuration for any control and monitoring application is made easy with the ‘programmer-free’ web browser.

Additionally, the company recognised customers’ increasing need to visualise critical workflow information and has designed FlashBoard to integrate seamlessly with TSL or any other third-party control system. At NAB NY, TSL will demonstrate the addition of several features to FlashBoard’s interface, including sophisticated system and world clocks, up-down production timers, on-air and cue light indication, on-screen branding, web-based content display and video tiles.

Visual Data Media Services, the leading provider of digital supply chain services to global content owners and distributors, has announced the opening of a cutting-edge digital cinema at its leading facility in West London, UK.

The new cinema is fully 4K and Dolby Atmos capable and comprises a 10-seat theatre built around a NEC 4 projector and fed by a Doremi digital cinema server. A Dolby Atmos CP950 sound processor is linked to 28x JBL speakers and 14x 1KW Crown amplifiers.

Of particular interest is the 4-meter-wide acoustically transparent woven fabric screen. This is designed to Dolby and THX standards, and allows users to hear the cinema audio without the distraction of the perforations that are typically required to allow the sound from speakers mounted behind the screen to travel into the auditorium.

“This is the final time that many of our clients will see their film before it is distributed to the cinema network and it’s important that they have no visual distractions and are also assured that they’re reviewing their content in a high-end and fully calibrated environment,” explains David Margolis, Director of Digital Cinema at Visual Data Media Services.

Partner Communications Selects Broadpeaks Server-Side Ad Insertion Solution

Broadpeak®, a leading provider of content delivery network (CDN) and video streaming solutions for content providers and pay-TV operators worldwide, today announced that Partner Communications Company (NASDAQ and TASE: PTNR), a leading provider of telecommunications services in Israel, will deploy its server-side ad insertion (SSAI) solution. Integrating Broadpeak's SSAI solution with other Broadpeak technologies already deployed, including origin server, CDN, and cloud PVR, will enable Partner Communications to deliver personalized ads within VOD content, helping it to better monetize its cutting-edge OTT television service.

The operator will use Google Ad Manager, iFeelSmart for the client application, and Broadpeak's solutions for manifest manipulation. Broadpeak's ad insertion solution allows Partner Communications to personalize ads. Broadpeak's SSAI solution avoids rebuffering during ads and defeats ad blockers, ensuring a superior television experience for end users. In addition, iFeelSmart has integrated Broadpeak SmartLib, which enables avoiding ad skipping and provides client-side analytics information. Broadpeak's BkA100 video delivery analytics system then displays this information, combining it with server feedback, in order to provide decision makers with a comprehensive view of the entire system.

DVB Approves DVB-I Specification, an Internet-Centric Solution for Linear Television Services

DVB, an industry consortium that develops open, interoperable technical specifications for the delivery of digital media and broadcast services, today announced the approval of its DVB-I specification by the DVB Steering Board in Geneva. It has been published as DVB BlueBook A177.

The DVB-I specification aims to ensure that linear television delivered over the internet is as user-friendly and robust as a traditional broadcast television experience. It offers the possibility for linear television services to be delivered to any device with a suitable internet connection and media player, including TV sets, smartphones, tablets and media streaming devices.

"In developing an internet-centric solution for linear television services, we are providing the industry with a crucial missing piece that raises internet-based delivery to the same level in the DVB ecosystem as RF-based content delivery," said DVB Chair Peter MacAvock. "With these building blocks, addressing the discovery of DVB-I services and the delivery of programme metadata, DVB offers broadcasters and operators an exciting new deployment option."

The DVB-I specification defines DVB-I Service Lists, a means for internet-connected devices to find curated sets of linear television services that may be delivered through broadband or broadcast mechanisms. It also defines the methods to retrieve electronic programme data for those services, which can be integrated into a single coherent offering that is accessed through a consistent user interface.

The ROH has been streaming live ballet and opera performances to cinema audiences around the world since 2008. By making a move to ultra-high definition (UHD), initially for recordings and ultimately for live relays, ROH remains at the forefront of high quality 'live to cinema' performance.

Equipped to meet current high-end production standards and emerging new broadcast standards, the newly fitted £800k Media Suite consists of a full UHD/HDR production gallery and engineering room, which now boasts a tapeless workflow, intelligent network control system, improved recording and playout facilities, 4K monitor wall, state-of-the-art vision mixer, bespoke production desks and enhanced camera talkback system.

Following a rigorous tender process, ROH selected Megahertz to supply the turn-key solution not only to future-proof the facility, but also simplify operations for the varying production crews that use it. Megahertz worked collaboratively with ROH, providing a range of services from consultancy to design, construction/interior design liaison, sourcing of equipment, integration, and installation. Steve Zissler, ROH Sound & Broadcast manager and Peter Byram, Broadcast Consultant canvassed opinions from the freelance broadcast staff, ensuring the design met the users’ requirements.

 AJA Video Systems has introduced new upgrades for its Ki Pro Family of production-proven file-based recorders. A new v1.5 firmware update for Ki Pro GO adds timecode recording and playback, expanded primary and backup recording to all USB ports and new clip naming and segment recording. Ki Pro Ultra Plus v5.0 introduces a new Infinite Recording feature that allows the unit to act as an always running backup recorder. Both firmware updates will be available soon to customers as free downloads.

Ki Pro GO is AJA’s new portable, multi-channel H.264 recorder and player, featuring up to 4-channels of simultaneous HD and SD capture to affordable, off-the-shelf USB media. With the v1.5 firmware update, Ki Pro GO now records and plays video with timecode. The timecode can originate from an incoming SDI video’s RP188 data, be recorded as the time of date or be specified to start at a specific hour. For playback, timecode values are automatically embedded as RP188 data on Ki Pro GO’s SDI outputs. The v1.5 update also expands backup and primary recording to all five USB ports, providing users with increased flexibility to choose their desired recording destination. Additionally, the update adds new clip naming and segment recording, automatically creating a unique file name for each clip and identifying each segment of a continuous recording for extended event time needs.

Nevion, award-winning provider of virtualized media production solutions, has experienced a growth in bookings in its Americas region of 34% so far in 2019, compared to the same period in 2018. Sales of software and services in the region have also more than quadrupled in the period, reflecting the increased demand for IP solutions, based on Nevion’s flagship software-defined products.

Broadcasters look to virtual programming to exploit their content libraries

More than a third (36%) of broadcasters are failing to utilize their content library despite facing increasing competition from streaming services, according to research by ATEME, the emerging leader in video delivery solutions for broadcast, cable, DTH, IPTV and OTT.

Although almost all (98%) of the broadcasters surveyed use their content library to create new channels for particular events or occasions, the majority (82%) are impeded in the ability to do it quickly, unlike their streaming counterparts. 44% of broadcasters revealed it takes them up to three days to create a new channel, while over a third (38%) say it takes them up to a week, which not only hinders their ability to capitalize on events but could result in potential revenue loss.

“With a continuous influx of competition from all angles, broadcasters must begin to do more with their content libraries. Creating new, virtual channels would allow broadcasters to take advantage of topical and cultural events, such as award season, during which they could use their back catalogue to quickly develop one-off channels to celebrate winners as they are announced,” commented Remi Beaudouin, Chief Strategy Officer, ATEME.

As broadcasters explore ways to use technology to maximize their content, almost two-thirds (60%) of broadcasters are utilizing virtual broadcasting to create one-off channels, while of the broadcasters not currently doing virtual broadcasting 70% said they will do so within a year.

A Choir Performance in Kuala Lumpur Achieved Crystal Clear Sound Thanks to DPA Microphones

DPA Microphones’ recently launched 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphone was used to great effect in Kuala Lumpur when a choir of 12 men and women gathered in Independence Square to mark the 50th anniversary of the Department of Enforcement, Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The event, entitled Hari Penguatkuasa DBKL, featured a parade in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Enforcement Day. It culminated in a live performance by the DBKL City Hall Choir who performed in front of an audience of approximately 2,000 people.

 

Mr Ajun Mubari, head of Malaysian audio rental company Mubari, says DPA’s 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphones were chosen to amplify the choir because their integrated shock mount and wind screen made them ideally suited to outdoor use. “The 4097 microphone is awesome and very easy to work with,” he says. “We used one pair to cover the choir group and positioned them on either side of the choir who were standing in a semi-circle. The concert generated very high sound pressure levels – in excess of 90dB – but, thanks to the 4097’s high isolation, the sound coming from the stage monitors (which were placed in front of the choir and behind the microphones) did not affect the available gain during the performance. This was a huge advantage as it meant we could capture the true sound of the choir without picking up any other sound.”
