TV 2/Bornholm is the regional TV station on the Danish island of Bornholm, which is situated in the Baltic south of Sweden.
The TV station is part of the national TV2 collaboration and was established in 1990. TV 2/Bornholm has an active website, broadcasts on its own channel 24 hours a day and transmits regional programmes using part of the national broadcasting network.
The technology used at the station is continually being upgraded. For some time, the management had been looking for the ideal production platform with which to replace the previous system, which could no longer be updated and did not meet the requirements for HD production imposed by the Danish Parliaments most recent media agreement.
The entire workflow in Sonaps runs in HD 1080i from recording to broadcasting. The system also boosts editing capacity and the possibility of proxy editing, which is important for Outside Broadcast (OB) production.
TV 2/Bornholm decided to initiate an EU procurement process, for which a total of 14 suppliers wished to be involved. The field was then reduced to five suppliers, who took part in the EU procurement process.
We wanted a system integration solution, which could fit in with the stations other technology and the ENPS user interface, said Carsten Ager, Technical Manager, TV 2/Bornholm. From the decision to opt for Sonaps until full integration, it took six months. But we could actually have done it in just four months.
Sony Open Platform
Sonaps is based on Sony Open Platform, where everything runs digitally with a high degree of integration. The Sonaps system is, therefore, not a standalone product, but a component in an integrated workflow solution, which controls planning, ingest, editing, play-out and archiving. It does all this in close interaction with external newsroom computer systems such as Associated Press' ENPS(Electronic News Production System) or iNews and CG teleprompter systems from various suppliers.
TV 2/Bornholm has around 70 employees, of whom 50 are production staff. The station is also supported by many regular freelancers when the workload becomes too great for the permanent staff. The organisation currently has 30 Sonaps licences. This has proved to be sufficient, as the licences are not linked to specific workstations, and can be used individually. Before Sonaps was brought into use, six super-users were trained. These super-users then prepared training days for all the stations staff.
Major OB assignments
One of the stations major recurring assignments is the annual Folkemdet (Denmarks Political Festival on Bornholm), which is held in Allinge, Bornholms most northerly town. This is a meeting of people and politicians for which Bornholm provides the venue. Around 35,000 Danes debate and listen closely to a total of 750 events at which all of Denmarks political parties are represented.
The media coverage is huge. TV 2/Bornholm is the pivotal broadcaster and hires the islands fibre-optic connections, so that the on-site production team can edit using Sonaps.
The upgrade to Sonaps enables us to broadcast more content to the inhabitants of Bornholm for the same cost, concludes Jan Jrgensen, Director of TV 2/Bornholm.
