PSSI leverages C-band spectrum to engineer challenging transmission of and lsquo;The Match II and rsquo;

With rainy weather all day and no fiber availability on-site, “The Match II” charity golf event presented a significant live broadcast transmission challenge. To support this event, which turned out to be the most-watched golf telecast in the history of cable television, PSSI Global Services provided several primary and backup paths, as well as data and internet via satellite, using C-band transmission vehicles.

Live from the Medalist Golf Club in Hobe Sound, Florida, “The Match II” featured Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Peyton Manning and Tom Brady in an event that raised $20 million for COVID-19 relief. Attracting a peak of 6.3 million viewers, “The Match II” aired on four channels in the U.S. and internationally on CNN International.

PSSI successfully engineers complex transmission of American Idol finale

With COVID-19 dramatically changing the way television is produced, PSSI Global Services put its engineering and live event management expertise to the test to deliver a one-of-a-kind American Idol finale to viewers nationwide.

Due to social distancing measures and restrictions on large gatherings, the contestants and judges could not meet in one location for the finale. To meet this challenge, PSSI had transmission vehicles and engineers at the final contestants' homes across the country, as well as the homes of the judges and host, Ryan Seacrest.

Meanwhile, in Burbank, California, PSSI had its CK35 mobile teleport outside the production studio to receive all the remote feeds and send back the hosts to each location, as well as provide ABC with the network backhaul. All remote and return feeds were transmitted on three transponders of Eutelsat 113 West A, using PSSI International Teleport as a point of access for PSSI’s remote engineers.

To bring all these separate venues together into a cohesive show, PSSI collaborated with Nextologies to deploy Nextologies’ NXT-4 equipment to eight of the locations. This technology enabled the production team in Burbank to control each camera remotely by tunneling into the cameras via public internet.

To facilitate the partnership, PSSI Global Services and Telstra established redundant high-throughput services through PIT with full access to the GMN, including support for ASI, SDI and data connectivity. The redundant solution protocol includes two diverse routes for each transmission, assuring SLA level availability.

Mo-Sys Transforms Remote Production and Virtual Studios

Mo-Sys Engineering, a global leader in real time camera tracking and camera remote systems, can now remotely operate cameras on the other side of the world, without perceived delay, with the launch of TimeCam.

TimeCam represents a triple benefit to production companies. First, there is the saving in cost and environmental impact in sending camera operators to site. Second, it means that the most in-demand operators can be much more productive, providing excellent coverage at a live event each day rather than losing time through travel. Third, it means that you can add cameras to your coverage without adding headcount: for instance, a downhill ski race might have eight cameras along the course, with one operator controlling cameras 1, 3, 5 and 7 and a second controlling 2, 4, 6 and 8.

“’Traditional’ remote production puts the control back at base, but still needs camera operators to travel to the location,” explained Mo-Sys CEO Michael Geissler. “By compensating for latency in transmission and compression/decoding, TimeCam means that operators too can stay at base and be much more productive by operating on several events, when normally they could only be on one.”

As well as unveiling TimeCam, Mo-Sys will also demonstrate its flagship virtual studio technology StarTracker, which uses a constellation of dots on the studio ceiling as a camera tracking system. This is now extensively used by many prestige broadcasters to provide the tracking for augmented reality studios and is increasingly being built-in to studio cameras.

Whereas most virtual studios use a proprietary graphics system which in turn uses the Unreal gaming engine from Epic Games, StarTracker Studio (in a 19” rack) now features the plug-in Mo-Sys VP which we like to call Unreal Unleashed, a direct interface between the camera tracking and the UE4 render engine. Through the plug-in, control is direct, and no other software layer is wrapped around the Unreal Engine allowing full access to the latest UE4 features.

“Both TimeCam and StarTracker with Unreal Unleashed are transformative technologies, capable of bringing new creativity and productivity to the broadcast and movie worlds, allowing sophisticated productions around the globe,” Geissler said.

PSSI Global Services engineers massive at-home transmission for Rolex 24

For NASCAR’s Rolex 24, PSSI Global Services, the industry leader in live event management, transmission and connectivity solutions, successfully engineered an at-home transmission that included delivery of 32 video paths and 150 audio paths via both satellite and AT&T Global Video Services fiber.

“This was a remarkably complex transmission for what is undoubtedly the biggest at-home transmission in the country,” said PSSI’s Director of Broadcast Sports Rick Ball. “Once again, we have continued to change the game, proving just how much can be accomplished with the right mix of expertise, experience and technology.”

Using two and a half transponders and only one amplifier, the company transmitted three different modulation schemes at the same time. The primary multiplex utilized DVB-S2X/32APSK, while the secondary program multiplex was modulated using DVB-S2X/16APSK, each at 125 Mbps. The third multiplex was 40 Mbps using DVB-S2/8PSK modulation. All together the three multiplexes, totaling 290 Mbps, occupied only 90 MHz of satellite bandwidth.

PSSI International Teleport (PIT) provided extensive hub services between the racetrack in Daytona Beach, Florida, and NASCAR headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to transmission of the video and audio, PSSI Global Services was also responsible for providing comms and internet for production.

PMC’s founder and CEO Peter Thomas has been awarded a Fellowship by the Institute of Professional Sound (IPS) in recognition of his contribution to the professional audio industry.

IPS Chairman Simon Clark says: “We have honoured Peter for the significant impact he has had on the audio industry through pushing the boundaries of monitor design to achieve more accuracy, particularly at higher volumes. PMC’s Advanced Transmission Line system for bass loading is unique and has delivered noticeable improvements in audio quality over conventional loudspeaker design principles. It is fair to say that Peter’s work in this area has been transformative and has resulted in loudspeaker products that are the world’s reference for mastering and for the bulk of music production.”

As a charitable organisation that champions the highest quality of sound production and sound recording in all forms of broadcast, recorded, and live events, the IPS is widely respected for the support, training and networking opportunities it delivers. Its Fellowship programme is very selective – there are currently only 10 living people who hold this honour – as it is designed to recognise those who are ‘operationally outstanding in their area’.
