Channel 5 Simplifies Workflows with Single-Point Infrastructure Posted: 25/11/2019
Channel 5 Simplifies Workflows with Single-Point Infrastructure

Channel 5, based in St. Petersburg, Russia, has dramatically rationalised its core technology by updating to a Platinum™IP3 router from Imagine Communications for its MCR and playout. The remarkable design of the Platinum IP3 incorporates much of the video and audio infrastructure, eliminating a large number of outboard devices from multiple vendors, simplifying cabling and reducing power consumption, as well as making workflows more coherent and transparent.

Channel 5 was already using an Imagine Platinum router, but continually increasing operational demands called for more inputs and outputs. Channel 5 took the opportunity to rationalise its infrastructure by bringing much more functionality into the new, expanded router, eliminating the need for external third-party devices.

“We knew that the newest models of Platinum router, like the IP3, can host a huge amount of functionality within the frame, making system architecture much more logical,” said Sergei Volhin, technical director of Channel 5. “It meant we could do away with a lot of other equipment, making the installation neater and easier to understand. The new Platinum IP3 reduces the cost and complexity, maximises on-air security, and gives us the capability to quickly set up workflows and expand the I/O as our needs develop.”

The new 28RU Platinum IP3 router was specified, configured and installed by Imagine’s channel partner, MediaProject. The IP3 is highly scalable, and in its initial implementation, it provides for 576 x 1024 video I/O in SD and HD, with fully redundant routing and both copper and fibre interfaces. The router also supports 64 TDM audio slots, each carrying up to 128 audio channels.

As well as the highly resilient switching, the Platinum IP3 also offers video and audio processing which in other systems would require large numbers of third-party devices — each consuming power, cooling and rack space. At Channel 5, all the multiviewer displays in the playout and master control area are driven by router-integrated Platinum SX Pro multiviewer cards — enabling a real saving in outboard processors and ensuring faster and more secure operation. The router also integrates audio embedding and de-embedding with full level control and channel shuffling and extensive video processing.

“Every broadcaster wants a core infrastructure that is going to be absolutely secure and resilient, but is also compact, convenient and clear,” said Mathias Eckert, SVP & GM EMEA/APAC, Playout & Networking, at Imagine Communications. “The fundamental design of the Platinum IP3 router allows us to configure very complex signal management, processing and monitoring in the same device, so a single command can fire multiple actions without the need to set each parameter. That makes for very secure operations, even in complex workflows.

“The result is that — as Channel 5 identified — the Platinum IP3 is a complete solution, and one which reduces cost while enhancing resilience,” Eckert added. “And, when the time comes, it can be expanded to encompass IP switching alongside SDI and digital audio, providing long-term security.”

The router project was installed and commissioned by MediaProject during summer 2019.

WEIGL and Avolites Collaborate on Dollywood Wildwood Grove Installation Posted: 22/11/2019
WEIGL and Avolites Collaborate on Dollywood and rsquo;s Wildwood Grove Installation

Avolites and Weigl were proud to recently partner on The Wildwood Tree, a unique installation located within Wildwood Grove at Dollywood. The centrepiece of this new land is majestic and unlike any other tree in the world. It was designed & built by LifeFormations with creative from The Imagination House. All involved were able to bring this to life using pioneering lighting and video technologies.

Weigl designs and manufactures a range of fascinating software and hardware products for permanent theme park and interactive experience installations. The story of their collaboration with Avolites starts back in the mid 2000’s where Weigl used Avolites’ DMX Pearl and Azure consoles to create single universe ‘single pass’ moving light profiles for their animatronics shows. This shifted at the NAMM show in 2018 when things got a bit more interesting.

Mike Blasko, President of Weigl, met Stephen Baird-Smith, sales manager of Avolites, who was demonstrating Synergy on the stand – the groundbreaking feature set of Avolites’ Titan and Ai V12 software that integrates lighting and video control together. As the two began discussing the ins and outs of the software in more depth, Blasko was intrigued to see how it could work for the unique applications Weigl was being challenged with from their customers and partners. Weigl’s installations recently have relied more and more on lighting and video at their core and the team had been searching to find the most efficient way to generate DMX streams built partially from traditional lighting cues and partially from video. Their workflow also often relied heavily on traditional ‘busking’ approaches, which was what brought them to Avolites in the first place.

Although Synergy was still at its beta stage when it was introduced to Blasko, he decided to give it a shot in his upcoming projects and as product developers themselves, Weigl knew what they were getting into. From there, a strong partnership began. Weigl worked directly with engineers at Avolites and the team at Group One in US (the exclusive distributor of Avolites in the US) to start integrating Synergy into their Wildwood Grove project at Dollywood.

Using beta software on projects can be risky and requires a huge amount of support; however, it is the perfect opportunity to accelerate development. Weigl worked closely with Avolites, providing clear and concise feedback without the pressure of a live performance setting.

Viaccess-Orca to Host Webinar on Cutting-Edge Anti-Piracy Strategies Posted: 18/11/2019
Viaccess-Orca to Host Webinar on Cutting-Edge Anti-Piracy Strategies

Viaccess-Orca (VO), a global leader providing OTT and TV platforms, content protection, and advanced data solutions, announced today a new webinar titled, "Defining and Executing a Piracy Management Strategy Through Cutting-Edge Technologies and Services."

Ignoring piracy is not an option: the need for an efficient and personalized anti-piracy strategy is critical.

Nov. 26, 3:00 p.m. GMT --  register at http://bit.ly/37lP8Vh.

• Content piracy has evolved over the last few years with the democratization of IP-based video delivery.

• Pirates have found ways to bypass traditional content protection technologies, redistribute, and monetize pirated content.

• Broadcasters and service providers face immense pressure to increase subscribers, ensure revenues, avoid churn, protect their brand reputation, and comply with rights-holders' content-protection requirements.

• Licensing pictures or events on an exclusive basis has proven to be increasingly challenging for rights holders due to rampant piracy.

By relying on experts and specialized tools — such as dynamic watermarking, DRM, breach detection, and password-sharing identification — service providers can anticipate piracy risks, instantly identify the source of piracy, and take counteractions. The webinar will discuss why media companies should build a piracy-management strategy and how it can be supported by VO, a leader in content protection technologies.

Maggie Rogers Shines Brightly With Sapphire Touches Posted: 11/11/2019
Maggie Rogers Shines Brightly With Sapphire Touches

MIRRAD supplies two Avolites consoles for Ben Everett’s design for producer, songwriter and performer’s headlining tour

A lot has happened in Maggie Rogers’ world since 2016, when a video of her demoing a then-newly-recorded song, “Alaska,” for Pharrell Williams at NYU went viral. Following opening slots on major tours with both HAIM and Mumford & Sons last year, Rogers dropped her own major label debut, Heard It in a Past Life, this past January, which charted in the second highest slot of the Billboard 200. Consequently, the artist has spent much of 2019 on the road in support of the album, performing a sold-out fall headline tour in such iconic venues as Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium, Berkley’s Greek Theatre, and New York City’s Radio City Music Hall.

The “look and feel” of Rogers’ tour this year has been a collaborative effort between the artist and Lighting Designer Ben Everett, who first started working with her when he lit Rogers’ first-ever show in London two years ago. Having toured with an impressive roster of bands over the past five years—including Bear's Den, The Jesus and Mary Chain, and The Dandy Warhols—Everett is now part of the UK-based MIRRAD team, which has been supplying a pair of Avolites Sapphire Touch lighting control consoles for Rogers’ 2019 worldwide trek.

Everett notes that he’s been using Avolites lighting consoles “pretty much since I started in the live music industry,” he shares. “I was lucky enough to learn on all of the early Titan software, and mainly used the Tiger Touch II and Quartz consoles to begin with. The features that kept me attracted to the desks at first were the ability to quickly create really impressive and intricate effects, and the user-friendly and multi-functional layout of the touchscreens. And while growing with the consoles over the years, the ease of being able to create cue stacks, key frame shapes, and pixel mapping really helps me in my day-to-day programming now.”

YC3 Lighting Design Deploys Avolites Server Technology for Romeo Santos History-Making Concert at MetLife Stadium Posted: 05/11/2019
YC3 Lighting Design Deploys Avolites Server Technology for Romeo Santos and rsquo; History-Making Concert at MetLife Stadium

It was an historic evening for Romeo Santos, one of Latin music’s most successful icons. On September 21, he headlined a night at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, which became the single highest-grossing concert in the stadium's history, a record previously held by U2.

Named for his latest LP, Utopia, the concert, which spanned 45 songs over four hours and included a guest appearance by rapper Cardi B, was as much a visual tour de force as a musical one, with 22 LED screens covering literally almost every square foot of the stage, including the ceiling. It was an undertaking that required the most robust video servers in the world, and video production designer YC3 Lighting Design turned to Avolites Ai servers to make the night magical.

YC3, which was in charge of the overall stage and production design, fashioned the system around eight Avolites Ai servers—two Q3, two R8, one R4, and three custom servers using Avolites-compatible hardware and Miami software licenses—plus an Avolites Tiger Touch II lighting control console.

“It was the biggest show in the history of Hispanic music!” shares YC3 Lighting Design Owner Yamil Charif of the estimated 85,000 fans who were there. “It was also the highest-grossing concert at the MetLife Stadium, even bigger than U2. It had to be perfect.”

And it was, though not without its challenges. Santos, known as “King of Bachata,” the strain of Latin music from his native Dominican Republic, rarely follows a script, and this show was no exception. “He likes to improvise, to make it up as he goes along,” says Charif. “There was no way we could do this with a single file and just program a server and hit a macro; this show required a lot of flexibility, which came from using many servers, so we could adjust the video images to follow what he was doing as he was feeding off of the crowd.”

SPLNTR An Immersive Projection Installation Showcasing Cutting Edge Technology Posted: 30/10/2019
SPLNTR and ndash; An Immersive Projection Installation Showcasing Cutting Edge Technology

Ed Shaw of NEICO and Brett Bolton create a stunning immersive projection mapping project in the heart of Las Vegas’ Art District with the help of some of the industry’s top brands.

Tucked away in the Arts District of Las Vegas, a unique installation is taking shape. Ed Shaw of NEICO and Brett Bolton are working tirelessly to create the first of its kind audio visual art installation in Las Vegas. With the support of Avolites, Group One Ltd, AG Light and Sound, X-Laser, GLP and Notch, NEICO presents SPLNTR.

Shaw has had a love for projection since working with 1024 Architecture on the BOOMBOX, one of the first world-wide touring productions of its kind. The spark for SPLNTR came earlier this year when he saw a projection project named ‘POETIC AI' by Ouchhh in Paris and decided that having never seen anything like this in Las Vegas before, now was the time to develop his own idea for an installation. After speaking to a few people, the vision became a reality and he had the go ahead with some help from Avolites. “We were looking for an alternative to a trade show that was more appealing to our clients and designers” Stephen Baird-Smith sales manager of Avolites says “At the same time Ed had the idea for an interactive installation. We’d worked with him and NEICO before on the OMNIA and JEWEL projects so we knew we would work well together. It was the perfect opportunity to bring it together”
