Veale Associates has provided high end acoustic design for University College Falmouths purpose built Performance Centre, built at the Tremough Campus in Cornwall, UK. This was a large project costing around £15.4 million, which came from various sources including the European Regional Development Fund Convergence Programme.
The University College's Performance Centre is one of the most sophisticated facilities of its kind in Europe, dedicated to delivering innovative Performance degree programmes in Music, Theatre, Dance and Production. In addition it holds a public, year-round contemporary performance programme attracting local, regional, national and international artists.
The centre includes a recording studio with a state of the art teaching control room, an associated large composition and live performance area, two further sound control rooms, two isolation booths, a central patch area and a tie-line system to a number of practice rooms and studio areas.
Specialist acoustic design and consultancy was provided by Eddie Veale of Veale Associates, covering issues such as acoustic performance and visual treatment. Integral to the work, design and construction drawings were supplied for the treatments detailing all materials with specifications, coordination with air conditioning and lighting, also taking into account initial client meetings, desk study time and client reviews.
Eddie commented: The room sizes had been determined by the architects, the University had particular demands for each of the rooms and it was a challenge to design the acoustics of each room to meet the performance specification. With the cooperation of an experienced contractor (Silverthorn) we were able to meet the requirements with the minimum loss of space. Consultation and development of ideas with the University was made easy because that knew exactly what they wanted. Several aspects, such as the dado trunking, was bespoke to this project.
E.G. Silverthorn & Sons supplied and installed the various acoustic treatments and finishes to the walls, floor and ceilings of the live studio, three control rooms and two booths to Eddie Veales specification. Director Trevor Silverthorn has worked together with Eddie on many similar builds and both have great respect for each others skills.
It is vitally important that companies are able to work efficiently together and to communicate totally at all stages of a large project like this said Eddie Veale.
The systems infrastructure was designed and put in place by IPE, leading UK installer and broadcast systems integrator, who had the responsibility of installing the equipment and relevant cabling, and to test and deliver to the client.
Eddie Veale said Colin Judge and the team at IPE have accumulated many years of expertise in this field. We can operate very efficiently together to deliver the result to the client on time and within budget
Jason Edwards from the Tremough Campus Services Group, the partnership that delivers buildings, facilities and services on behalf of University College Falmouth and the University of Exeter, who share and jointly manage the Campus, said: We wanted to ensure that the centre would become a first class teaching facility. It was essential to procure high end professional design which would give us a leading edge installation, giving students the opportunity to work in a real-world professional environment. The appointed suppliers were responsive, proactive, and in a lot of cases provided a service above and beyond our expectations.
Eddie Veale co-ordinated the various suppliers in this project on behalf of Silverthorn / IPE and the project was delivered on time and to budget. His role was pivotal in terms of the client meeting key project milestones added Peter Hooper, the School of Media & Performances Technical Manager at University College Falmouth.
The main build contractor was Leadbitter, managed through Turner and Townsend.
