EUROPEAN SUBTITLE PROVIDERS EMBRACE WINCAPS INSERT PLAYER Posted: 19/11/2009
EUROPEAN SUBTITLE PROVIDERS EMBRACE WINCAPS INSERT PLAYER French facility Television Video Services (TVS) and Portugal's Dialectus – a specialist subtitle services supplier – have both purchased SysMedia's recently introduced subtitle inserter and playout unit, WinCAPS InSERT Player.

The easy-to-use 1RU unit provides a self-contained solution for offline dubbing of subtitles to a video stream, providing playout-ready subtitled content that can be recorded to tape or server. The flexible unit can handle simultaneous dubbing of both open captions and teletext subtitles in multiple languages.

John Boulton, Subtitling Product Manager with SysMedia, says, "With its simple load-and-go operation WinCAPS InSERT Player does not require expert operational skills. The unit has been specifically designed for the application, leading to an uncluttered user interface, accessible via a standard web browser."

The sales to Paris-based subtitling services facility TVS and Portugal's leading subtitle provider, Dialectus, were handled through SysMedia's local distributors (Isovision and Stepro respectively). Technical Director at TVS Stephane Djennadi-Meneghini commented that SysMedia was selected because "the company has strong experience in teletext technology".

Boulton concludes, "WinCAPS InSERT Player is further evidence of our drive to develop new, easy-to-use products that can deliver greater production efficiency at affordable prices to support the growing demand for increased subtitling across Europe. Early adoption by two experienced lead customers has been very encouraging."

Radio France buys SADiE technology for mobile production Posted: 19/11/2009
Radio France buys SADiE technology for mobile production Radio France, France's public service radio broadcaster, has purchased three SADiE LRX2 portable multi-track location recording systems and two PCM2 laptop-based editing systems. The units will be used for mobile production across France to provide content for the broadcaster's seven national stations.

"There are things that make SADiE really easy to use, even by people with a poor knowledge of computers, especially the project, the clipstore and the slip modes in the playlist editing. For high-end users, the trim window is wonderful," comments Philippe Destrebecq, DPA/DLP/Responsable du support production at Radio France.

The SADiE LRX2 Location Audio Workstation has been designed to fulfil the needs of an ever more complex recording environment and to serve a wide variety of remote recording applications. It combines SADiE's proven high-quality professional audio input and output 'slither card' I/O modules with a tactile hardware control surface and the ability to use a standard laptop via USB2 as the host computer to provide a powerful and effective combination according to the particular application. The SADiE PCM2, meanwhile, is a non-destructive hardware audio editing system complete with SADiE Version 5 software. It provides the ability to edit audio professionally wherever the user can take a laptop running Windows XP.

"The LRX units have been used at musical festivals in Beaunes, Saintes, La Roque d'Anthron, and the theatre festival of Avignon," reports Destrebecq. "We're currently planning to buy three more of them in 2010 too to increase our coverage across the country."

CBS Sports Uses FOR-A FRC-7000 FRAME RATE CONVERTERS Posted: 19/11/2009
CBS Sports Uses FOR-A FRC-7000 FRAME RATE CONVERTERS

Through the cooperation of CBS Sports and London-based CTV Outside Broadcasts, the Oct. 25 off-shore matchup between the National Football League's New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers was broadcast from London's Wembley Stadium. A key piece of equipment, the FOR-A FRC-7000 HD frame rate converter, was supplied by London-based rental company Galaxy Light & Power LLC.

From football to ice hockey, the challenge in broadcasting sports is that there are a lot of objects moving quickly in different directions at the same time. "The FOR-A FRC-7000 handles fast moving objects far better than other converters I have used," said Andy Grant, Chief Executive and Senior Engineer at Galaxy Light & Power. "You have more control over it in terms of optimizing settings for each kind of material. We found settings that will give a virtually transparent conversion for American football."

Galaxy Light & Power worked independently with the NFL to provide an additional converter for instant replay feeds, and the outside broadcast facilities provider, CTV, wanted two additional converters to provide local news feeds within the United States and backup feeds. There were a total of five frame rate converters on site, all of them Galaxy's FOR-A FRC-7000s.

According to Grant, the technical team at CBS was very pleased with the high quality of the conversion. "FOR-A converters are their first choice for this kind of work," he said. "This is the second year we've done it. CBS was impressed with the work we did last year, hence we've been asked to do it this year. I like working with the FOR-A FRC-7000 because it is reliable and produces a consistently high quality conversion."
