Wow - 2016 - we certainly didn't see you coming. Thankfully, one thing we can reliably see coming in the midst of our increasingly unpredictable futures, are the beautiful range of shiny inventions, gadgets and technological wonderment of the year 2017 - so put today's headlines to one side and enjoy this rare opportunity to take a look at a reliable and bright future.

VR

VR was the talk probably more of 2015, but has increasingly become a more realistic product to hold in your own two hands and 2017 will see Microsoft roll out a range of increasingly more affordable VR products, as well as the birth of Microsoft Holographic (a free update), making its way to Windows 10 which will allow and encourage users to get fully immersed into the world of VR at the ease of couple of clicks!

HitFilm 3 Express

Okay so this may not be a gadget as such but this is certainly a great and must we say *free* video editing software. Lingering around since 2011 the software has only gone from strength to strength with its clean interface and special effects available this is a must for the video editor on a budget out there! HitFilm 3 Express also gives users the ability to create virtual lighting based on the actual lighting in shot. There are also motion-blur and depth of field effects features which can be added in the post production edit thanks to the smart technology built within the software.

Fire TV

Amazon's streaming video player is certainly becoming a must have for your entertainment setup. This is perfect for those that are Amazon Prime fans, as this only works with the Amazon Prime Subscriber. The Fire TV delivers Ultra HD, 4K streaming capabilities at a low price and has a very large library of content. Reports have stated this is "slick and responsive" so perhaps the leap to Amazon Prime in the New Year is calling your name.

Apple Macbook with Touch Bar

A great feature for editors, the lovely new addition that is the touch bar enables you to change shortcuts and also brings up custom Final Cut Pro X video editing shortcuts and touch timeline, something that is a great advantage especially when you're working to that deadline!

Replacing the row of Fn keys on top of the MacBook Pro's keyboard enables new functions, including Apple Pay purchases in Safari without having to authenticate with an iPhone or Apple Watch (due to the new TouchID Sensor).

Sony A7R II: The Best Camera 2017

With the likes of Nikon and Canon being the main contenders in the camera market, it comes as a nice surprise that Song is pushing the door open for themselves and in a big way. Sony A7R II is fantastic for landscape and portrait photography, and also comes with a rather large 42 megapixel, making it a worthy contender for a camera. Another bonus are the impressive video capabilities and premium feel to the body of the camera.

Google Smart Watch

It's been a big year so far for Google with the recent release of the Pixel phone which has seen a great response, now Google is expected to launch its own watch as well, according to Android News. These smart watches will be give Google the chance to be more active in its wearable computers, a market that has been dominated by the Apple Watch and fitness trackers so far.

Why Renting is the New Buying
Ed Tischler To rent or to buy? This has long been a topic of debate in the world of property, with people having to choose between spending virtually all of their money up front or giving their money away each month with little chance of seeing a return.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

State of the Nation and Virtual Social Distancing
Dick Hobbs - new Under normal circumstances, I usually make my plans for NAB in November time. It’s when the airlines tend to have sales. This year, for personal reasons, I did not get around to booking back then, and it was only at the end of February that I could start thinking about it.
