PIgmento Switches to DaVinci Resolve Studio for HDR Delivery

Blackmagic Design today announced that Madrid based post house, Pigmento Color Grading, has switched to DaVinci Resolve Studio as part of a facility upgrade for HDR color correction and IMF format delivery.

Founded by Fernando Martinez and Pepe Abellàn, colorists with more than 20 years of audiovisual finishing experience, Pigmento has rapidly formed a reputation for delivering a boutique, tailored service to both broadcasters and OTT clients throughout Europe.

The team’s credits include episodic features such as The Pier, Locked Up and Emmy Award winning Money Heist, which has gone on to be a global success.

Spurred by increasing client demand for Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and IMF ready workflows, DaVinci Resolve Studio has now been installed as the primary online, grading and mastering solution within Pigmento’s two state of the art grading suites and two additional support workstations for conform, VFX pulls and deliveries.

Featuring Intel’s Dual Xeon SuperMicro processors paired with NVIDIA Tesla K80 and RTX2080ti graphics cards respectively, the grading suites feature Sony BVM-HX310 and Dolby PRM 4220 reference monitors and DaVinci Resolve Mini Panels for control. Underpinning the setup is 180TB of shared storage, with a 600TB NAS for backup.

Plans are already in place to undergo a full renovation to add two more suites, for 4K projection and HDR respectively, by the end of 2020.

“Before every new show we’ll review our workflow, upgrading where necessary to ensure Pigmento continues to attract the best opportunities from future clients,” says co-founder and colorist, Pepe Abellàn.”

“We used alternative finishing tools in the past, but weren’t happy with their development speed, specifically when it came to adoption of new technologies like HDR and IMF. Clients expected us to deliver to these new standards, but our team felt a lack of support from a software perspective. We began researching alternatives and Resolve consistently came out on top.”

“We now use OFX tools for deflickering or the dead pixel filter on a daily basis. We also use the filtering options on the Color Page to allow us to apply a QC correction to a particular tape on the whole show in minutes. It’s revolutionized the speed of our workflow,” says colorist, David Gonzalez.”

“The transition to DaVinci Resolve has been seamless for us. Not only from a technical perspective, thanks to a simple and well organized interface, but also the global community of users and Blackmagic support team have been invaluable, helping find answers whenever we have an issue,” concludes co founder and colorist, Fernando Martinez.”

“DaVinci Resolve is hard to beat. Its high quality heritage, combined with price point and flexibility, makes it the perfect tool for a boutique like ours, allowing us to easily scale up whenever we need and deliver with the latest technologies.”

A Headphone Wearing Theatre Audience Experiences Truly Immersive Live Audio Thanks To DPA and rsquo;s New 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone

Nanna-Karina Schleimann has become one of the first sound designers to make use of DPA’s new Binaural Headset Microphone, which gives sound technicians, vloggers, film makes and YouTubers an accurate and reliable tool to capture authentic immersive audio in real time.

Delivering the superior sound quality for which DPA products are internationally renowned, this new headset allows film, theatre and online content creators to capture exactly what each ear is hearing so that those consuming the content on headphones can experience full immersive sound. Earlier this year, while the 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone was still in development, Schleimann was given the opportunity to beta test it during her graduation performance from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen.

Three Binaural Headset Microphones were used to amplify the voices, actions and movements of the actors performing on stage in Good For Nothing, her graduation performance production. Each member of the audience was given a pair of headphones so they could hear the sound from each actor via a wireless system.

“The binaural microphones allowed the audience to hear exactly what the actors were hearing, as if they were standing on the stage and being whispered to,” Schleimann says.

disguise solutions Powered Video-Intensive Set for Network on Broadway Posted: 06/12/2019
disguise solutions Powered Video-Intensive Set for and lsquo;Network and rsquo; on Broadway

When Tal Yarden created the projection design for ‘Network’ on Broadway he selected disguise gx 2 media servers to drive the video-intensive environment that sets the scene for the iconic story of network anchor Howard Beale. Bryan Cranston won a Tony Award for his portrayal of Beale, an ageing anchor struggling with low ratings, who unravels live on the air only to become a new populist prophet.

Based on the Oscar-winning 1976 film, ‘Network’ was directed by Ivo van Hove and opened at the Belasco Theatre in December 2018. Brian Cranston reprised the role he premiered at the National Theatre in London in 2017. The show’s limited run was extended in 2019 with the final performance in June 2019.

Video was used as a way to heighten the story of Beale and his rise to fame. New York-based disguise rental partner Sound Associates supplied the video and audio equipment for the production. The set design for the TV studio featured over 50 screens across various types of monitors plus a large LED video wall and 6 projectors powered by disguise gx 2 media servers. The capture capabilities of the servers were also used to pipe in live video footage from moving cameras on the set further enhancing the storytelling and video design.

Although the film was written in 1976, the play’s creative team made the story relevant to the time while leaving in the original period references. “We wanted to extrapolate a kind of anachronistic storytelling,” says Tal. “So, technologically, it’s not all period television sets or cameras, and some of the content - although most of it is from the 70’s - spans time.” Interestingly, in doing research for the show he found a correlation between news stories and commercial advertising past and present.
