Date: 13/11/2019
AJA Announces OG-12GDA-2x4 openGear and reg; 12G-SDI Distribution Amplifier

AJA Video Systems has announced the OG-12GDA-2x4, an openGear 12G-SDI distribution amplifier, featuring support for High Dynamic Range video and Ross® DashBoard software for remote monitoring.

Designed for critical broadcast, OB truck and live event production environments, OG-12GDA-2x4 features dual-channel inputs for incoming 12G-SDI signals, with reclocking of the distributed signals to dual 4x 12G-SDI outputs. In an AJA OG-X-FR openGear frame, this allows for incredibly high density with up to 20x 12G-SDI inputs distributed to a total of 80x 12G-SDI outputs when fully loaded with ten cards.

OG-12GDA-2x4 features compatibility with OGX, OG3 and DFR-8321 openGear frames, and DashBoard software support on Windows®, macOS® and Linux® for flexible device control and monitoring over a local network or remotely.

OG-12GDA-2x4 features include:

  • Dual 1x4 12G-SDI openGear Distribution Amplifiers
  • Dual 1x 12G-SDI BNC inputs
  • Dual 4x noninverting 12G-SDI BNC outputs
  • Format agnostic 270 Mbps – 12 Gbps video formats
  • Automatic input equalization and output reclocking
  • Support for HDR video
  • Passes embedded audio, all ancillary data including closed caption and time code
  • Input Present and Input SMPTE Lock LEDs
  • 10x 12G-BNC rear connector module included
  • Power: 4.5 watts
  • Hot swappable
  • DashBoard Support with OGX, OG3 and DFR-8321 openGear frames
  • Five-year warranty

“To address the rigorous demands of modern production environments, we strive to provide our customers with powerful, new technologies for more flexible and failsafe workflows,” said Nick Rashby, President, AJA Video Systems. “We’re excited to introduce the OG-12GDA-2x4, our first 12G-SDI openGear card, to seamlessly integrate into higher bandwidth 12G-SDI workflows that support higher resolution, large raster content at higher framerates – with less cabling.”

Pricing and Availability

OG-12GDA-2x4 will be available in December through AJA’s worldwide reseller network for $695 US MSRP. Free DashBoard software is currently available for download from the support pageon AJA’s website. For more information, visit: www.aja.com/products/og-12gda-2x4

Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro on Tour with Little Mix Posted: 15/01/2020
Blackmagic URSA Mini Pro on Tour with Little Mix

Blackmagic Design today announced that live video for the European dates of Little Mix’s LM5 Tour was delivered by the LED Shed, who relied on acquisition and control hardware from Blackmagic Design. The solution featured URSA Mini Pro fiber chains and ATEM 4 M/E Broadcast Studio 4K.

LM5: The Tour is the sixth concert tour by British pop girl group, Little Mix. Opening at the WiZink Center in Madrid in September, the European tour has spanned 40 shows in total, concluding at London’s O2 Arena.

A multicamera fiber workflow was deployed for acquisition and IMAG relay, with two URSA Mini Pro cameras in the pit on a track and dolly system, two more front of house, and one in an elevated position at the back of the arena with a Canon 96x 4K long lens, to capture the band’s triangular platform that flew out across the venue.

The LED Shed’s Luke Levitt says: “We would usually have one camera in the pit, but with so much fast action on stage, having two meant that we could catch all of the choreography. It’s our job as video directors to make sure everyone in the room can see what’s going on, and it’s imperative to have as much movement in the cameras as possible to reflect that action.”

Camera Hire Heavily Investing in CiNX from Miller Tripods Posted: 14/01/2020
Camera Hire Heavily Investing in CiNX from Miller Tripods

Camera Hire, a well-established Australian rental company and a leader in industry camera support solutions, recently purchased 10 CiNX 3 Fluid Heads and 10 Sprinter II 2 Stage Carbon Fibre Tripods from Miller Tripods. For over a decade, Camera Hire has provided professional cameras and supporting equipment for a large range of productions including commercials, documentaries and feature films.

As a long-time customer of Miller Tripods, Bevan Dally, managing director of Camera Hire, knows he can always turn to Miller to provide top-of-the-line solutions for his customer base. “We’ve been using Miller’s ArrowX series for some time now and the fluid heads are excellent,” he says. “The payload range and versatility are very beneficial considering the various types of jobs we support. With the CiNX line, our customers are able to mount a variety of cameras, including Sony’s FS7, Canon’s C300’s, and ARRI’S Alexa Mini and Amira, with ease.”

Thanks to Miller’s CiNX 3 Fluid Heads, Camera Hire can provide its customers with a solution that significantly improves cinematographer’s workflows. “Upgrading to the brand new CiNX series was a no brainer for us, especially because of its ability to mount ARRI dovetail plates directly on the head,” Dally says. “We can now easily provide our clients with a Sony VCT or ARRI dovetail system using the same fluid head, without the need to swap back and forth between multiple plates. With CiNX fluid heads, cinematographer’s can easily and quickly change from one camera to another with a seamless transition.”

Baselight helps to polish Uncut Gems Posted: 14/01/2020
Baselight helps to polish Uncut Gems

Uncut Gems is the latest movie from directing duo, the Safdie Brothers. The movie tells the story of a charismatic New York City jeweller and gambler (Adam Sandler), and is set in the diamond industry of New York. So it is appropriate that the colour palette was created at The Mill NY by colourist and director of DI, Damien Van Der Cruyssen.

Van Der Cruyssen collaborated closely with cinematographer Darius Khondji, as well as the Safdie Brothers, all of whom he had worked with previously on the Jay-Z video for Mercy Me. “At that point I got a good understanding of their relationships and how I could fit into the equation.”

Visually, Uncut Gems has a classic New York City look, but with a modern twist. “The Diamond District hasn’t changed much over the last forty years, so it automatically had that 70’s ‘noir’ feel,” commented Van Der Cruyssen. “But we wanted to break away from the steely, gritty New York to a more real-life aesthetic – less forced and contrived.”

Around half of the movie was shot on 35mm film to give it a more natural look, which meant Van Der Cruyssen had to treat the digital footage to match. “Marrying the film footage with the digital scenes was quite challenging,” he explained. “So I asked the crew to shoot some grain elements that could be overlaid in Baselight and adjusted per scene.”

LiveU Solo Helps Isha Foundation Connect with Millions of People in India and Around the World Posted: 14/01/2020
LiveU Solo Helps Isha Foundation Connect with Millions of People in India and Around the World

LiveU’s wireless video encoder, Solo, is being used by Isha Foundation – a non-profit, public service organization founded by Sadhguru – to connect with millions of well-wishers and volunteers in India and around the world. The Foundation uses Solo to stream live events, notably the night-long Mahashivaratri festival at Isha Yoga Center – which is watched by around 50 million viewers – and the Cauvery Calling and Rally for Rivers projects to revitalize India’s depleting rivers.

Rally for Rivers was launched by Sadhguru in September 2017 when he personally drove over 9300 kms in 30 days to raise awareness about the dire situation of Indian rivers. Today it is the world’s largest ecological movement, supported by over 162 million people, and is a major force in shaping river revitalization policy in national governments and world bodies such as the United Nations. Cauvery Calling is an on-ground implementation of Rally for Rivers, to revitalize river Cauvery, the lifeline for 84 million people in southern India.

NUGEN Audio Unveils SEQ-S Software Update at NAMM 2020 Posted: 13/01/2020
NUGEN Audio Unveils SEQ-S Software Update at NAMM 2020

NUGEN Audio is pleased to announce the latest software release for its SEQ-S linear phase ‘spline match and morph’ EQ solution at the 2020 NAMM Show (Booth 14101). Now with a resizeable direct-draw interface and EQ matching presets, SEQ-S features a surround capability of up to 7.1, making it easy to fine-tune audio. Ideal for both corrective mix work and gentle mastering polish, SEQ-S is perfect for movie, television and music productions.

“We are very excited to showcase the latest updates to NUGEN’s SEQ-S for the first time ever at the 2020 NAMM Show,” says Paul Tapper, CEO, NUGEN Audio. “Our engineering team has worked diligently over the past year to provide significant product updates and developments, and we’re sure that current and future customers will love the latest additions. SEQ-S delivers creative EQ power in a way that no other solution provides. It allows you to massage and correct any audio with incredible resolution that you just can’t get with a traditional parametric interface – allowing imaginations to run free.”

SEQ-S’ intuitive visual interface adapts to suit the task at hand, whether simple or sophisticated. Using this solution, producers can fine-tune their tracks with flexible, detailed envelopes that are difficult to achieve with traditional EQ. The new preset system for EQ matching enables producers to expedite their workflow by streamlining the match EQ process, this feature allows them to push their sound toward reference material or take a deeper creative approach with filter morphing and tempo locked effects. Additionally, the system’s newly implemented, resizeable interface offers further flexibility for users to set up SEQ-S for their precise workflow needs, allowing for more detailed curve sculpting, among other things.
